Graph an equation with a negative fractional slope

👉 Learn how to graph linear equations written in slope intercept form. When given a linear equation in slope intercept form, (i.e. in the form y = mx + c, where m is the slope and c is the y-intercept). We first plot the y-intercept and using the slope, we can determine the rise and the run of the required line and then be able to plot the next point from the y-intercept. We then draw a straight line passing through the two plotted points.

So what do you do when you're trying to solve for b? And already have y, m, and x? Doesnt tell you how to do that...

To solve for b in a y = mx + b equation you would plug in numbers that you already have. For example if you were given (5, 6) and m = 3/4, to solve for b you would just solve from there. So that would give you 6 = 3/4(5) + b!

You put a 1 under it. 2/1 is the same thing as 2. However doing this gives you your rise/run. So after doing y intercept, go up 2, over 1.

what if the numerator and denominator of the fraction are both negatives? like -7/-3? do you go down and then to the left? or does the fraction become entirely positive?

If the numerator and denominator are BOTH listed as negative, yes, you would go down 7 and left 3. You could then switch them to positives to give you an extra point to the right of the y-intercept. Hopefully that makes sense!
