  • The Beretta 92XI is a 1911 style single action only version of the Beretta 92 M9 series of pistols. Did Beretta get the 1911 right?

I really wish gun makers and optic manufactures would all come together to make 1 standard mount for all, like we have USB on computers and smartphones, everyone would win.

Like Weaver? I don't understand why we don't have it for optics other than that Weaver came into being before the civilian gun market was what it is now. All of that was just government contracts.

@@fiddsj45 Apple really made things difficult for customers when they changed charging port
in every new model. Usb became standard and apple was kind of pissed about it.
And in reality there is two main usb standards in smart phones.
      Old micro and new C-type.
Micro was used around 10 years and now new ones have C-type.
If that is confusing i think we have problems with many other areas as well...
Yes to be safe you should have couple adapters in hand because there are
shitloads more micro type connectors than we yet have c-types.

What sets the Honest Outlaw apart from many other reviewers is that although brutally honest, he doesn't let his own ergonomics needs dominate the overall review and completely bash the firearm and generalize to all people.

I was talking Gun Tubers in the comments section on a Vintage Warfare video a couple days ago, and I mentioned how I love the way HO interacts with his comments (i.e., he doesn't argue or insult people who disagree with him). A couple other people agreed that's a large part of why we follow him. Dude is super cool, he's the kinda guy I love having in this community.

You are the only person I know to find beretta grips not big enought, usually it's the other way around; it will be interesting to see the result combining a traditional "curvy" grip and the frame safety.

My personal favorite Beretta is the 92fs, yes I know there’s more modern and more updated versions but the OG 92 is the model I fell in love with over 15 years ago when I first seen it in lethal weapon, if I could only own 1 gun it’d be my 92 I absolutely love that gun.

I am glad beretta made the SAO. I have one of the old ones with the frame mounted safety. I much prefer it over the slide mounted safety. I also was on armory detail in 1985 in the Marines when we were transitioning: function checking and packing the 1911s away. The 1911s, many decades old, nearly all still functioned perfectly. Amazing really. We all wanted to buy some of the WW2 and Korean War era guns, but they didn’t allow it.

I just solved the "safety down on racking" issue by installing a "G" kit in my M9A1. Problem solved! I tried the Taurus 92 but felt the same way about the safety that you do about this one. Good review, maybe better by having a testing team to get a variety of responses.

Great review. Beretta has done frame safeties several times but never in a regularly available production model since the original 92 and the 92X Performance. 92 Combat, Stock, Billenium, Centennial, Steel I and Steel II, but most of those were very limited production because, spoiler, the frame safety sucks. Honestly the "best" configuration for people who deride the slide mounted safety would be a standard DA/SA but with the completely slick 92D Double Action Only slide. It would just require the user to manually decock, not a problem for anyone moderately familiar with DAs.

Interesting fact of Taurus’ Beretta clones:
In 1974, our army signed a contract with Beretta to supply their guns. The contract lasted until 1980 and wasn't renewed, so Beretta sold all the machinery to Taurus. Taurus started manufacturing their very famous (in Brazil, at least :D) PT92, based on Beretta's Model 92

    • @indyfan0066
      @indyfan0066 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

Additional interesting fact of Taurus' Beretta clones: Part of the purchase of the machinery was also Beretta sending engineers and technicians to ensure the machinery was installed and set up correctly and to train Taurus on proper use.

    • @stever8776

When I handle pistols at the gun store most of them seem fine. It's only after you have fired several rounds that you then begin feel how comfortable a pistol will feel in your hands. We always don't get an opportunity to try prior to buying it. As I recall THO also had an issue with the FN 45 Tactical because the safety was irritating his hands after repeatedly firing it. I had considered purchasing that pistol, but after handling one I could see how the safety can become annoying after shooting several 100 rounds in my hands. I have come to depend on these reviews to provide me with a realistic perspective of how these firearms will perform after repeated use.

  • @TT-ch2pz
    @TT-ch2pz 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

I had the same issue with the safety so I bought a set of G10 grips with the backstrap. I used my Dremel to make room for the frame-mounted safety, and these grips helped tremendously. Still not as comfortable as a standard 92, but much better than with the grips it comes with.

I managed to find a PX4 used at a LGS, man that thing is such a smooth shooter. I can't believe it didn't get more love, it has the lowest felt recoil for 9mm that I've ever shot, including 9mm 1911s. Haven't had the opportunity to try a CZ P or Shadow, but I would love to know what other smooth shooters are out there that are under 1500 bucks.

The straight grip thing is actually kind of old. They used to make a version called the Vertec that had the 1911 grip angle. Very cool they are doing it so you can have both the Vertec and the traditional beretta grip on the same pistol these days!

Great video as always. I must warn folks though, that if they buy a Beretta expecting a rebate, they may be very old and very gray before they ever receive it. I bought one in October, and should have received my rebate by December. No such luck. I contacted Beretta, and their investigation led to a promise that my check was mailed on January 29. Nothing yet, and the rebate company doesn’t answer their phone, and the BBB shows multiple complaints about the same issue. Beretta needs to get a handle on this.

You mentioned the Taurus frame mounted safeties, but Beretta actually had a line of 92s called the Steel 1 and Steel 2 that had frame mounted safeties and were all steel . The Performance Defensive is simply a newer version of that old gun. I owned three - one was SAO and the other two were DA/SA. I now own the Defensive and the Xi. I do agree that the safety is not ideal because it is mounted too high for me, although it never hurts my hand. I will say that I added the DA match hammer and the DA trigger to the Xi and now have it DA/SA and love the trigger more than the SAO version. It came in handy when I used it at a match recently and had a light primer strike, and simply pulled the trigger again to fire.

Carried a M9 for many years in the Marines. Can't say I have any experience with a 92 or M9 outside of military use. But the one's we had were well used and would jam all the time. Crusty, dusty environments didn't help. They were last resort use only. Meaning I might opt to use my M16 as a melee weapon over drawing my M9. That being said, when they were clean they did function quite well and were easy to shoot. I really did enjoy shooting them. I've considered buying one for nostalgia alone. But I want the old style M9A1 like I had in 1995.

I served 20 years in the Corps. Learned to shoot handguns with an M9. Carried one daily as a SNCO. They were well made and reliable. The issue magazines were garbage. I always brought my own factory or Mecgar magazines and never had a problem. Many Marines have a negative opinion of the M9 because of those bad magazines which many units refused to take out of their inventory. Also outside of a few special units handgun training in the Corps is horrible.

The complaint about the 92XI frame mounted safety is why I can live with the slide mounted one on my 92X. Racking the slide is a little more challenging but at least I can get a good grip without hurting my thumb. I have a similar issue with my HK45, the safety is uncomfortable to ride with my thumb and forced me to change my grip.

Hey Outlaw, I completely agree with your thoughts. I was strongly considering adding one of these to my other Beretta's but I had the same issue as you. I have chuncky paws as opposed to your yeti hands. The thumb safety definitely needs a re-design. It just doesn't fit the bill. If Beretta or some enterprising company could design a better fitting, slimmer and properly angled safety lever, it would be great. Until then, I guess I will stick with my 92X Centurion & Compact with Langdon & Wilson innards.

I picked one of these pistols up and sent it to Langdon Tactical to do the trigger job. It made a world of difference in how short that trigger reset is. Ironically, the one thing I HATE about this pistol is the frame mounted safety. On a normal Beretta, I am use to using the safety to pull the slide back. On the 92XI I can't put my hand on the back of the slide like other Beretta 92 pistols. I have to pull the slide back from the front because the frame mounted safety in the rear obstructs my hand from pulling the slide back naturally. I think the slide mounted safety is superior IMO.

Based on that safety issue it sounds like a good opportunity for the aftermarket. Being a large handed individual I’ll have to try this one out to see how it fits

In your view, does the lack of a grip safety matters when it comes to SAO-pistols carry?

I agree on everything fits everyone differently.
I love my cr920 and crp. I love my mr+comp. They fit me very well, always reliable. Res headed jolly green giants and Edward scissor hands no so much.
I had an LTT Px4. Was one of my dream EDC’s. Hated it beyond belief. Couldn’t sell it fast enough. HATED it. Some people swear by it. Didn’t fit me what so ever.

I haven't handled one of these yet, but thank you for confirming what I highly suspected already--the safety is *TOO DAMN BIG AND GETS IN THE WAY* .
It sounds like the same issue that a standard USP V1 has for many people, the safety is large and easy to reach, but it makes it very difficult for the support hand to find room to hold the gun tightly.
I don't have a 92XI to try this out, but I wonder if an older Taurus PT92 safety would fit in place of the Beretta safety? The original Beretta 92/Taurus 92 frame safety was near as perfect for most people as it could probably ever get--easy to reach, not too small, not too big, and leaves plenty of room on the frame to wrap the support hand around!

Love the switch to you doing a John Wick graphic on your video. Re frame safty. The only comment I have is I have 2 Beretta 84s, a BB and FS, and both have same problem. Every time I try to put on the holster back lash, it pushes down the safety. My die hard era 92F doesn't have that issue. Don't know if this one has the same problem or if it is a me problem. I don't have patrons letting me buy hundreds of guns. I got what I got.

I love berettas, I have a bunch, and the frame mounted safety is something I have been wanting. I have the 92x performance which has it and it doesn’t bother my hand. What does bother me is the trigger bar as I am a left handed shooter. I don’t know why they left that thing exposed.

The 92xi was the first beretta I ever bought and left a bad taste in my mouth from the experience. Cerakote on takedown lever was starting to come off on a friction point after taking it apart twice, the slide would get stuck taking it apart from the cerakote being a bit thick but that would work itself out with wear and time, the pin on the frame mounted safety backing out and deforming the pin and scratching half the length of the slide and for a single action with dlc parts when you got to the wall it was very gritty/ crunchy before the break even after about 1,200 rounds however a trained gunsmith said that should work itself out. I’ll probably come back around and get an older 92 or m9a3 or m9a4 because I love the looks, the pop culture and Military history and the way the slide felt when firing. I also thought I’d enjoy the frame mounted safety but with how tall it is if you rack the slide from the rear serrations your fingers hit and either stop or drag on the safety because it comes up higher than it needs to.

You can use that trigger in a regular 92. You have a flat and a radius by where the pins go through make the round side look like the flat side and you now have a flat faced double action trigger.

92X Performance has frame mounted safeties and still has Double action capabilities. With the steel frame it's heavier. But gets back on target faster.
Beretta previously made the 92F Steel with a thumb safety and cocked and locked capability and a steel frame. Unfortunately not very many were imported so they are hard to find and command a higher price than other 92 models.
The Taurus PT99 has a frame mounted safety. Made on Beretta machinery so quality is high. Neither have bitten the web of my hands
The millennium year 2000 celibaration model 92 Billinnium has frame mounted safeties. As a special limited edition they are very expensive compared to a regular 92. They look a lot like a 92X Performance. They are too Beautiful too shoot!!!
I have a permanent scar on the web of my hands from 1911A1s and Browning Hi- Powers. The Beaver tail grip safeties and larger sights, larger safeties were the best improvements on the 1911 platform IMHO.
    Thanks for another honest review.

Full disclosure: I am a Team Beretta shooter and my opinion is definitely biased. I completely agree there should be an optic plate in the box. Toni System makes a really good plate that works for basically all the dots, and Eleven7 Designs has optic specific plates. They aren't free, and it sucks you have to order them separately, but they are better than the Beretta plate... As far as grip and the safety lever, etc. I was a 1911 shooter for years, competed with them, love my 1911s. When I started shooting the Beretta, it was straight to the 92X Performance, also a frame mounted safety, but DA/SA (It can be converted to SA only with literally JUST the trigger. So awesome.). The 92Xi frame is slightly different than the Performance, and not just because it's alloy. The rear beavertail allows just a little more grip on the gun, and I think this is part of the reason you feel the safety more. Personally, it has never been an issue, and I have huge hands. I run thumbs up. I don't run thumbs forward. This is actually one of the reasons I like the de-cocker guns LESS because they bite my thumbs if I don't keep them down/forward and out of the way. I'm able to get a full vice grip and run the crap out of the Xi and the new Squalo variant which is even sexier, it has a magwell, includes three 22rd mags, and has fantastic aggressive G10 grips. My advice if you are shopping this gun, give it a chance, maybe you will need to adjust grip just a little, try thumbs up rather than forward, it works, it's worked for a LOT of high level 1911/2011 shooters for a long time as an alternative to thumbs forward. Bottom line, like Outlaw says, try it out!

I wish the XI came with the double/single like the competition model; I want to be able carry cocked/locked but also have the DA just in case of a light strike. I've seen videos of people add that feature back in. The safety levers are also chunky. Some low profile ones would be nice.

I have been shooting for almost 50 years, revolver probably 10x more than auto. Any pistol I shoot, my thumbs are down with the left thumb hooked over the right. Perfect control, and it works for everything. Changing is no fun, but it's something to consider.

I like the two tone look of the black grip on your M9A4 , I'm ordering one from My'n . I've been looking for the 92X RDO GR MODEL very hard to find. I saw this Model, but I want the DA/SA trigger , not SA only, don't care for the silver side or the frame mount safety . Ps Your Wifey shoots that Beretta very good 👍 nice recoil control . ❤
