  • Character letters are an important tool that you can use at sentencing to convince a judge that a lower sentence may be appropriate. A lot of people ask if I have sample character letters. You never want to submit letters that look the same. Yes there are certain things that I just want to see in the character that her and those things are discussed in this video. The number of letters depends on the quality of the letters. Federal judges want to hear from people who know about the offense and who can express your remorse.

This is such a hard thing to do and you explain it so well my son is in prison. It’s his first offense
and we have a very small family. It’s just him and I and one uncle.
He was homeschooled, so he did not have a lot of friends only coworkers now, so I am passing this on to anyone that he knew in hopes that they can follow your guide to help my son‘s case .
    Thank you very much

As a mother is how I'm writing my letter Ms Bass, because only a mom or parent truly knows their own child, I hope this will help the judge realize just who my son is.
I've gotten 3 other letters from family and 2 friends so far and they all say the same thing, which in my son's life are true, how intelligent caring and compassionate he is.
It's hard to discribe him any other way.
He's been like this since he was very young.
He's an only child who was homeschooled along with being raised in our business (a flower shop) so he was always around adults.
His crime is victimless, but the prossecuter made him out to be a monster, my heart broke listening to her.
Two words she used will be in my head forever ; Ammassing a fortress and a pharmacy.
      Neither of which are true.
He's been a collecter of guns from all over the country by auction sites etc. And antiques,in hopes of having a gun store.
The pills were for his own use, after finding his father dead in the house, so he suffered with the loss by buying online Xanax because if he went for help through a Dr he was afraid of losing his gun collection.
He was registered with the ATF and the FFL, he always did everything by the book.
So I think this is what I should say in my letter ?
We've always been truthful with each other with everything that he's done !
Maybe I'm as much to blame....😢

I've had opportunity to write two such letters on behalf of friends, and in listening to you I realize I probably did okay, but that I could have done better. Thanks for doing the videos.

Thank you Miss Bass. This was helpful. I’m not dealing with a legal issue, but a sensitive work issues for one of my former employees.

Is there a point when friends/family can write character letters prior to sentencing telling the court that the accuser is actually the abuser and that the accuser has a possible mental illness?

Those would be witness statements for your lawyer to show the prosecution to try to get a dismissal.

Great but your video seems like it only had to do with the guilty and not the victim. Your words, just saying.

I’m not sure I understand your comment. Are you referring to victim impact statements?

Your video only talks as if we are all the guilty one so do you have a video for the victims? @@dianebass5251
