My new favorite additions, since also need strong quads, back and hams are GHD, belt squat and reverse hack squat. Squat is blowing up now that my quads are keeping up with the posterior chain.
I totally agree , for hip thrusts I feel my glutes during the workout, but squats I feel them for the days to follow, when the muscles actually growing
I listen to you guys every day and mine your old videos for techniques, nutrition, science, and just plain hilarity. You're always on the cutting edge. This one is interesting because I squat and hip thrust regularly, but feel more glute activation when thrusting - so much that my glutes involuntarily contract whenever I watch videos of myself doing it. My thrusts recently progressed to 400 lbs and seem to be helping me squat heavier but after watching this, I'm going to focus more on squats and see what happens. Thank you and keep putting out your great content 💫
Perhaps because the hip thrust is more isolated and despite the double glute effect of a squat vs. the thrust, the major benefit is still to the quads. Either way, they seem to say here that they're complimentary so I guess I better start thrusting. 🤷♀️
I’ve found that heavy KB swings have built my glutes faster than any other exercise. I’ve never done thrusts but I’d imagine the movement is very similar
Huh, did not realize squats were so good for squats. I think it was Jeff Nippard (aka Nippy) who has said that squats weren't good enough for true glute development and you'd need to add something like hip thrusts or glute bridges in as well. When I first started working out a year ago I never thought my glutes were activating too much when I squatted but my glutes were sure sore afterwards. Now I don't get as sore but I have been progressively overloading. Recently my trainer told me to try and use my glutes more when squatting (think about that muscle when doing it) and I tried that and now if I do that when squatting I can really feel the glutes contribute. Like I said though, my glutes and legs don't really get sore like they they did even though I'm gradually increasing reps and then weight. I do 4 sets of 8-10 reps squats and 3 sets of 10-12 reps hip thrusts weekly. I guess your body gets used to exercising, to some degree.
Jeff nippard based his views for glute training largely off of Bret contreras research. Bret's research still shows that the hip thrust is a better exercise, even in studies comparing identical twins.
@@rad_lad_2715 Yeah you're right, he did base it from Bret. I dunno though, this new study mentioned by Mind Pump seems like it was designed fairly well. Guess I'll just keeping doing squats AND hip thrusts lol
Maybe the woman in the study usually focus more on Hip thrusts than squats because they don't want to grow their legs but by taking part in the study shocked their glutes by targeting them differently by squatting more. So more growth happened due to variation than the woman who were already more focused on the thrust than the Squat.
I have found hip thrusts work better instantly I am of carribean heritage and perhaps genetics plays a big part in this. I naturally have strong legs and when I squat my legs just get bigger and not much else. Where as hip thrusts give me that glute pump and it’s noticeable after resting a couple of days after that session. I think with hip thrusts you have to lift heavy to see results
Hip thrusts target upper glutes, the part where your butt looks more lifted and helps your butt look more pronounced. Whereas it’s easy to not target the upper glute when doing squats, they tend to hit your lower glutes and hamstrings more.
Squats are only better if you break parallel. Most people half rep squats and aren't getting all the gains they could. The reason squats may cause more growth is that the glutes are in a stretched position at the point of maximal tension. Also, for people who want to grow their glutes a lot more than their quads squats aren't the best choice. If you are looking for growth in both quads and glutes with a bit more emphasis on glutes you should obviously do both. Also, hip thrusts can really help you squat and deadlift more if weak glutes are your problem. So, saying squats are the best glute exercise is very narrow minded pov as it overlooks the isolation aspect, at which hip thrusts do a much better job. Squats are the best overall leg exercise, hip thrusts are the best glute focused exercise.
I've been squating for years no glutes peogress. ,then about 4 months ago I startes doinh hup thrust and oh boy my glutes gotten bigger about 2 inches lol . hip thrust is the mother of all glutes exercises·
Squads is the number #1 exercise to grow fast quads and glutes. It should never be left out in your exercise in leg day if you want better results. Hip thrusts does well or seem like it does but it hits more the lower back or posture. If you do just normal back exercises like row cables etc and do treadmill, you can lose some back fat and it gives it the glutes more noticeable look and its fact that squads does grow faster than hip thrusts. I’ve done squads for just 3 months and seen really good results and fast. You can also do sumo squads which help more inner thigh there’s various of squads depending on your body type where you want to target less or more but squads is the best and shouldn’t be left out if you want to see better and fast results in legs/glutes. Everything else could be done like lunges, leg press and etc. which are also very good leg exercises too. (You can also include the hip thrusts) if only squads aren’t working for you but you should do it properly and to the max to see really good results and that should be same in any exercise because hip thrust aren’t necessary for our workout but always have squads it’s a must because if you do just hip thrust and no other leg exercises, trust me your wasting your time and it’ll be very slow process. You must involve other leg exercises especially squads. And it’s uncommon if squads won’t work for fast and better results for legs and glutes, many people just don’t try their hardest or not doing them properly.

Here's the benefit, when programming I don't have to worry about the hip thrust interfering with my quad programming. Even if you grow more ass with the squat, doing them affects recovery on lower back and quads.
Also, a persons leverages are a big factor in which is better for you.
