Former Marvel Bullpenner (1990-1998) here. At this point, all of Marvel's lettering was done via pasteup. We did not go to digital lettering until somewhere around 1995/1996, or maybe just a little before then.
^ LEGENDARY Bullpenner!
9:35 That's a Mark Jeweler's ad! They usually showed up in areas near military bases, targeting newly enlisted soldiers with some extra money on their hands.
THATS A MARK JEWELERS VARIANT!!! THOSE ARE WORTH WAY MORE
I remember buying this when my dad was stationed in Germany in the late 80's. It was the strangest art I had ever seen! I was like "Where's Marc Silvestri?!"
That copy you were showing off is known as a "Mark Jewelers Variant" and typically tends to be worth more because of its rarity. I believe they only appeared in Northeast US distributed copies.
I was about to mention that, I grew up in the south and never had an issue with the Mark Jewlers insert. I hear that collectors on ebay pay a premium for these variants.
I believe they were intended to be sold near military bases.
@@mikelesan3964 Yeah, I believe that's correct. The target audience for those ads I think were for soldiers who wanted to propose or buy a gift for their significant other back home.
A quarter of comic book Instagram is obsessed with Mark Jewelers inserts. I could be wrong, but I believe they were aimed at the military base crowd.
This and the girls go to the mall episode with the return of the crappy knockoff ghostbusters cracked me the hell up as a teenager.
Always a good time hanging with you guys
Love this channel, been going through all the old videos. Thanks guys!
Claremont alludes to the Havok/Wolverine: Meltdown limited series when Wolverine tells Havok he “knows a place in Mexico” (on page 30). Meltdown is a crazy, violent series from the Epic imprint written by the Simonsons (Walt and Louise) and painted by two separate artists (Jon J. Muth did Havok and Kent Williams did Wolverine- I think even sharing the same page at times). My parents bought that issue for me from the racks of a drug store... those word balloons didn’t cover when Wolverine clawed a guy through the eyes... Great video as always!
I don't know how you feel about Ladronn's run on Cable but I think it's worth examination
This was one of the books reprinted in the UK for a summer special or something. I ended up with two so one got disassembled and plastered over my bedroom wall. Also, I think that faded colour is because it's meant to be viewed from inside the bar, through the window.
Yeah, I was onto ebay to see if I could get this original issue but then as they started through it I realised I've got this already - the UK reprint - such a bizarre one, remember been thrown / amused as a kid with the star wars and superman characters popping up!
oh my god, that's just boba fett
Anytime you talk about the Image founders I’m checking the video out.
Loved this, when it came out, having been a fan of Invasion.
Fun video guys. Thanks, now I gotta dig out my copy. Not sure I recall the jewelry add...
You guys have been busy! I gotta catch up on my Keyfabe episodes.
now i have to get the true believers reprint of this issue.
Man don't see the mark jewelers ads very often. Maybe I'm thinking of less colorful ones but I get the collectibility of them more lol
My very first X-Men comic book (just bought it again too)....!
Prawns! we have Prawns on the barbie! Unless you skewer the buggers, but who has time for that?
I'm fairly certain I still have this issue. I think I'll go find it.
Definitely got to pick back issues of X-men from that time frame!
Marks Jewelry variants are a very real thing to collectors. I believe those ads were not in every issue.
I still have mine, it was a great, fun fill in issue
Inspiring drawings
Is that a Mark Jewelers insert?
Can see Art Adams' influence on Rob in this, before it more-or-less disappeared from his style.
Nice dissection. Man, though... I bravely picked a weird year and era to begin reading X-Men.lol 1989-90 was scattershot.
Back to your roots I see! =^x^=
Why is he touching that book with human hands?
This was from back when I had a subscription to X-men. I was so disappointed at this issue. At the time I was still blissfully unaware of Rob and what he was going to subject us to in the new mutants and x-force.
🔥🔥🔥🔥
Yo I HAVE to see a mark bagley ultimate Spider-Man episode
