mate, like the ukranian government was overthrown with a coup in 2014 (most likely with the help of the CIA). Russia just wants its borders to be safe, its like having iran organise a coup in canada and take over. Get it? This government then started to ethnically cleanse russians from ukraine, just go watch BBC coverage of it when it was happening. Saying "Russia started it" is just ignorance of the facts. The CIA pushed too deep and ukranians are paying the price.

To the question of “Why invade?”
It’s important to keep in mind what each side’s political reasons are for fighting:
For Russia, they are fighting an imperialist war for territory and domination; but they’re doing it with a small base of political support. Only Putin and a few of his wackier supporters care about the old Russian Empire. I’m sure most of the elite and the general population would rather go back to their relative prosperity and world stature before the war. But they’ve conceded for now because the war has been “over there.”
Ukraine is fighting for survival and only needs to expose the incompetence and brittleness of the Russian armed forces and political system and base of support.
By opening a second front it exposes many Russian weaknesses: logistics, the leadership required to manage two fronts, etc. The Russian Army struggles to walk and chew gum, so expect quite a few more embarrassing headlines and setbacks.
And that’s the political gambit right there: every day that the Ukrainian Army is in Russia is a FAILURE of political and military leadership….thats the point!
Even if Russia “wins” in Kursk, it doesn’t matter because the Ukrainians were never supposed to be there in the first place. Every damaged building and traumatized person is just evidence of Putin’s failure of leadership.
If warfare is politics by another means, then the point is to rob Putin and his government of any headline of success. It’s to portray him as weak, foolish, and incompetent. The end game here, for Ukraine is a change of leadership.

They've been contained, are taking brutal casualties (and amongst their most elite units that were pulled from the rest of this line), are being rapidly cut off from supply/logistics and are being rolled back in areas. Their primary goal was to seize the nearbye NPP which they didn't get close to achieving. Russia has done all this with deep reserve and security units. Nothing was pulled from the Russia order on the frontline in Donbas.
Meanwhile, that frontline is disintegrating and collapsing even faster with the most elite Ukro units and reserves having been diverted to the foolish and desperate Kursk gamble. Russia is increasing its gains and Ukros are taking increasingly devastating casualties.
US/NATO is now desperate to keep up the fiction that "Ukraine is advancing into Russia" until after the US elections. The other primary objective of this wildly desperate hail mary was to gin up a "we're winning in Ukraine" narrative to carry the Biden/Harris admin through the election. And that increasingly collapsing narrative has to be propped up by Western corporate/Deep State media outlets like The Telegraph.

They have lost nearly 600,000 men, 8,435 tanks, 366 aircraft, and 28 ships, and 1 submarine. They've traded all of that for some small villages and farm land. Russia cannot sustain this, no country could.

Great last point. Russian troops in Ukraine will often kill them selves rather than surrender, but the ones in Kursk would rather surrender than fight. I think that’s a fair comment. Even though the ones in Ukraine that we’ve seen are mostly wounded ending their suffering, the point is that we’re not seeing many surrendering to Ukraine. I’ve only seen a few. Perhaps that will change now that large groups have surrendered in Kursk.

It was nothing short of insanity driven by desperation for Ukraine to have, again, invaded Russia. There was no possible way that two brigades with no air cover were going to make substantial gains from their start positions. With this war being the first that's largely driven by ISR, the Russians were immediately aware and quickly responded. So, we can compare this incursion to the 1949 Russian incursion into Finland, which turned into a route. Sure, Russia stepped back, put together a larger force, and obtained its objectives. Ukraine has no possibility of introducing a support force as it's hardly able slowing the Russian onslaught along the entire line of combat. What we most likely can count on now is Russia tossing out any thoughts of peace talks, but moving to take Kharkov, Odessa, and possibly Kiev... All Russian cities. Why not?

Russia attacked Finland in 1939, not 49. It has been attacking Ukraine for 2.5 years and only been able to gain territory at the cost of horrendous casualties.

@@Kath-nd6pj It's poor style and unnecessary. If there is more to add, add it. If the something more is not important, it's not important. It's not appropriate to leave the audience guessing at what they missed, it leads people to jump to inaccurate conclusions. Furthermore, it becomes a habit of speech and people start using it without even knowing that they are. Kind of like saying "um" too much (or whatever pet phrase they might have). Once in a while is no big deal, and for the average person it's no big deal, but for a professional news presenter (or any professional speaker) it is not appropriate.
