    I'm thrilled to see an old Chevelle come back to life.. Independence at that. I don't know why but I feel it's my patriotic duty to watch every episode.
    After finding all the frame rot I can't help but wonder what other surprises there might be in it.
    Thanks a million for doing this Mr Vice!

    Here's a trick I use to compress the spring enough to put on the spindle nuts, especially when there is no weight on the frontend:
    Use a floor jack just like you did but wrap a chain or 2" ratchet strap around the axle of the jack and the frame through the upper control arm. Take up any slack but don't lift the jack off the floor. The strap will keep the frame from rising while you lift the lower control arm as much as you need to regardless of spring height or compression.

    Excellent video. This allowed me to visualize the key suspension elements without mentally deleting all of the other engine parts. When restoring our 1966 Mustang convertibles in the 1980s, we never had the engine out, and just replaced various suspension and steering parts one by one in place. So I never knew what the front end looks like on its own. Thanks!

    Would love to see the string alignment. Heard about it from an old farm boy but never saw it done. Love the channel, keep up the good work!

    • @rwandersonut
      @rwandersonut 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I worked in a alignment shop for a number of years and got to the point of doing it by eye (on my own cars of course). but then again I had the luxury of then doing an actual alignment to check the old peepers. It is amazing how well it comes out. Of course, it is impossible to set the caster this way which is the "red headed step-child" of alignment angles. While a poorly set caster will not wear tires, it can make drivability horrible. The trick is that to change the caster angle, it affects camber at the same time. If those spacers are added or removed equally front to back, it adjusts only camber. If you make a difference between the front and back bolts, it moves the upper ball joint forward and back, changing the caster. Usually a tech will set the camber first (cause that will wear tires, and then get as much caster as possible until it bottoms or maxes out the camber. Just realized I am rambling a little bit.........sorry about that.

      As a kid I played in train yards. They would replace train coil springs. They were a lot bigger than car springs. We would throw them up as far as we could and try to avoid getting hit with them.

    When there’s no alignment adjustment shims in the upper control arm of your GM car, the cross member has collapsed and there’s no more alignment adjustment left on your upper arm. So what has to be done is take the car to the frame shop where they block up the bottom of the cross member and put about 40 tons of pull on the upper arms, and in effect pull the upper arms apart from each other. And then you’ve got some adjustment again.

      @Rylee Klein If you mean vinegar, yeah, over a very long time, that's possible. But I've used it many, many times. Works like a charm for small surface rust. Then there is using a 12 volt charger and a graphite rod and doing reverse electroplating. The rust flies off pretty quickly.

    An old dirt track racer trick for installing a stiff coil spring. Wrap a chain under the jack and over the frame. Works better than a coil spring compressor or having you're big bubba friend lean on a 10' pry bar.

It's now been 90 million days and a bunch of cessions with my head doctor and I can finally eat my cereal at the table instead of curled up in bed. My doctor told me I should be back to normal by my 95th birthday. I'll still watch your vlogs, but I still get sad. No Capilators, not even a knitalator capistrono. Signed "STILL SAD"
