I love this era of Honda. Instead of just mashing the pedal in an automatic car with lots of power down low, you have to be incredibly aware of your momentum, your weight, your revs, what gear you're in, and how much speed you can carry through the corner. It's stuff you can forget about slightly when you have so much power to compensate for any lack of driving ability. Lot's of misinformation in these comments. The VTEC point 6100 is correct for the B16B engine, it can of course be lowered with a remap, usually to around 5200 optimally. VTEC controllers on their own are useless as they lower the VTEC point without adjusting the fuelling. Honda keep the VTEC point deliberately high for an agressive cam change over, which is sub optimal but a fun selling point. The car likely hasn't lost any power, it's hampered by low torque and longer gearing from the S4C box. Also having a passenger makes a huge difference in these, Misha would have had a better time driving alone. For the Nurburgring an EUDM or JDM 98 spec DC2 integra with an extra 200cc and the shorter geared S80 box would probably be a better experience, though the B16B is fun in it's own right. They're quite amazing engines really, what other manufacturer can build an engine that lasts so long at those RPMs without ever having to be opened. I'll bet this one likes a good drink of oil though 😀
Wahayyy finally someone who knows what they're on about😅 oil usage isn't horrific but of course it does burn some. It was a champ the week we were there using .4l in 1600 miles over the whole trip
@@Dzero4 haha that's not bad. The B16B I had in my EF would use a litre on a track day and belted some smoke out. Still made 186hp though and never broke 😂. I miss the engine to be honest, replaced with K20 which is much faster but certainly less fun. By the way I went from the 4.4 S4C to a 5.1 final drive with my B16B and the impact in performance was incredible, would definitely reccomend that
The VTEC point on all my B series Hondas was around 6200 stock. My 1991 EG6 SiR and 92 EG6 SiR II would engage VTEC around 6 grand. My 1997 EK9 would engage VTEC around 6 grand, and my 1996 DB8 ITR engages VTEC around 6 grand. Also, I wouldn't say an S4C has longer gears as the gear ratios in the S4C was the B series standard at the time. The S4C has the exact same gear ratios as the Y21 and '96 spec ITR S80 transmission. The problem is that both the B16B and the B16A have absolutely nothing to offer below 6 grand and the 4.4 final is just too long of a final drive ratio for the engines to be any fun. the 4.7 final drive completely changes them. With that said, I'd rather just swap the final drive in a 96 spec S80, S4C, or Y21 (with a diff change obviously), cause the 98 spec S80 has the longer 3-5 which kinda sucks the fun out of the 4.7 final.
Вы только представьте. Этот атмосферный двигатель выдает мощность среднего современного 1.6 литрового двигателя с наддувом, при этом он проехал очень, очень много, что для любого современного двигателя с наддувом просто нереально. Хонда поистине создала шедевр👏
Fast? No, but fun? Yes! edit: My EP3 is still going, around 328.000km at this moment. Take care of the engine by warming up(and oil changes ofc) and it will last a long time!
Sounds great. Miss my B16b. They are best when modded, full intake, exhaust and a remap and there is less lag before crossover, mine made 194hp on stock internals. I never got bored of revving it out to 8800RPM.
Excellent content. It's amazing to see a car that everyone can afford that survives longer than any one of the hypercars could possibly hope to. Thank you very much for this video.
In Australia they are a minimum of $40k AUD for a genuine EK9. Even a povo pack EK hatch in terrible condition and high k's are for sale around $5-10k.
@@desirabledrives44 how much was it when it was brand new? How much is a Ferrari Lamborghini Pagani etc etc brand new? Can you get 320,000 Km on any of them without spending the equivalent of another two or three brand new ones in keeping it running?
@@DavidMiller-yc5ol to my knowledge we never got them as a brand new car. They only came in as a JDM import. The other cars you mentioned have all gone up in price substantially even as used vehicles. As an example a Lamborghini Gallardo could be purchased a few years ago for under $150k. The same year model now is around $200k AUD. We are waiting 12-18 months to buy a new Hyundai i30N and I saw an advertisement a few days ago with someone asking nearly $80k for the facelift version. R34 GTR Skyline was around $50k a few years ago but that's now doubled or tripled. A mint 2011 champ white FN2 civic type R was $15k but now closer to $25-30k. Diesel fuel is now $2.40 a litre but it was the 2nd cheapest fuel a few years ago.

Hi Misha, a legend on green hell, she has just finished her engine break-in 😝💯, my ek4 vti at 329,000 km and my ep3 at 210,000 km, outstanding reliability if regular maintenance 🔥🔰
90's engines last forever. My e36 has 303.000 km and everyone that has ridden in it thought it pulled great, even people that are used to e36's and know what a stock m50b25 in good health feels like thought it pulled hard for what it is.
@@chrismills9346 Hehe if you take care of it really well, it can last long as well (its a honda bro), but naturally aspirated hondas are something different :)))
@@exenvanogert4284 Dang that's a lot, especially given the M54 sometimes has ring issues ? I guess you did not follow Long Life oil intervals and changed the oil more often, like you would on the older engines ?
God I miss my B-series Civic EG9 when watching this 😁 Also, this car with a final drive ratio somewhere around 4.7 instead of stock 4.4 would be a weapon around Nurburgring! Have to use all the rev range at all times though 😄 Stock it's aimed more towards tracks like Tsukuba with tight 2nd gear corners.
Supports and proves what I have told people for over a decade that these engines not just B16s but all B, D, F, H etc of the 80s and 90s are near indestructible. The distance covered by a unit ultimately depends not on the engine but on how much care is given and how long the owners interest lasts. Many units outlasts the owners interest, driving life and still making the rounds around the car scene with different owners/cars/country and still factory sealed.
to any honda fan this is what heaven sounds like. That scream of vtec never gets old I love how he was pushing 9K on shifts. Exactly how vtec Hondas love to be driven at redline! Having Vtec engage at 4500-5000 RPM would help a bunch for the lap
If you watch the old Japanese best motoring videos where they raced these and the DC2s around Tsukuba they beat the living shit out of them with downshifts. They were press cars driven by racing drivers though. Their rule seemed to be if it was in the soft cam profile for even a split second, they'd downshift. Even if they landed somewhere 300rpm below redline. You can see the VTEC switches pretty much exactly at where it will land after the most aggressive possible gear change in the previous gear.
The interesting thing is that if you really shift at 8.6, you seem to stay above the 6.1 vtec limit. So if you are below the vtec limit it's worth downshifting.
@@benmann6323 yes but the trans don't look to be the original type R the original one is super short ratio and it's at 4k rpm in 5 gear at highway speed And the engine look to be really tired normally type R engine need ring at 100k mile And the JDM ecu got a hard cut at 180km/h

Great content as always Misha. Testament to how the engines were put together and the regular oil changes and maintenance the Owners have given it. Think you just need abit more seat time in a car like that to get to know gearing and driving style etc… Vtec must be kept on the boil. If you also had the opportunity (with owners permission ofcourse) to take it out solo you would also see great improvement on pick up. These cars really have very little torque and are effected by extra weight or even when A/C is switched on. They are over 20 years old mind. My DC2 (owned since 2008) is a real joy to drive around the Ring and UK tracks. Keep up good work!
Yup watching old best motoring and hot version videos its so fun to see the drivers keeping it right between 6-8.5k revs for a whole lap 😁😁 they are wild and fun engines, but they need to be in that rev range to perform. The newer K powered 6 speed Hondas are easier to keep in that band
Before an EP3, I had an EK4, apart from a bigger radiator, completely stock, even the intake, it's slightly less powerful, the chassis is less rigid, than the EK9, but I would say it's still better to drive, than the EP3. With the gearing I never had issues, it always stayed in the VTEC zone, changing at 5500 RPM. And the engine sound, even with a stock-ish rear muffler, sound better than a stock EP3. Actually, my mother is missing the noise of that car :D Stock suspension is also very capable, it's kinda soft, but the body doesn't roll much, and under load the rear starts to "turn" nicely. Also, the engine had 330000km in it, and it was never been rebuilt.
Very nice, would be nice to see some other Type R's such as a EP3. Also a 2000 car from the UK is rare to not be rotten. I also like the addition of the pedal camera. 👍
10:36 Thanks for asking that question. No way was it doing 100km/h while being pushed. Watching the speedo doing those speeds while saying 100 Km / h was mind boggling to say the least. I’m going to look for that model of Honda Civic or probably a bit newer when I take my sons to the Nurburgring.
@@MikkoRantalainen Just from the way it accelerates through the gears and having owned a few B series vtec Hondas Usually the piston rings would be degraded at this mileage It still runs well though 👍
The vtec crossover sounds great even on a engine with this mileage. With hondas you have to change your driving style a bit where as to stay in its top powerband you have to rev all the way out to stay in vtec and constantly downshift to the highest possible rpm. The cars dont have any low end power as the low end is for fuel efficiency and vtec kicks on the additional cam lobe allowing for the valves to open more creating additional power
Would love to get one of these and rebuild it. Looks like this one is missing a few horses😅. But bravo for keeping it stock and very impressive it still can do the ring with that mileage👏.

Awesome lap, as a owner of a k20z3, its really impressive that 320.000km, the owner took care of the engine... I don't know why honda changed the vtec engagement to 6.100rpm at the B16B, the b16a's are at 5.500, it would help a lot at this ocasion!
Fit a 4.9 final drive. Or if you want to get fancy use the integra dc2 98 1-3 gears and keep your ek9 4- 5 gears. Coupled with a 4.9 or 5.1 final drive. Will transform it and it will stay in vtec range Ek9 and 96 jdm dc2 have the same gearbox specs just different case number IDs . S80 4.4fd is dc2 96 jdm S80 4.7fd is dc2 98 euro and jdm and s4c 4.4fd is ek9 .
98 spec 1-3 are the exact same gears as the EK9. The 98 spec uses the longer 4-5 gears from the GSR (Si VTEC/ Integra SiR in Japan). So really, all you accomplished with your recommendation was giving a shorter final drive. 4.9 final is way too short and you're constantly rowing through the gear box. I had a 10,000 RPM rev limit on my EG6 with Toda VTEC Killer cams and the 4.9 final was godawful. I can't even imagine how bad it'd be with a lower rev limiter. Anything higher would be much, much worse. 4.7 final is the perfect final drive for an N/A B series.
People always think of vtec engines backwards. Honda basically build a race ready engine and then add a set of road cam lobes (hence why it’s so lame off vtec) and mapping to make it driveable everyday. It’s a shame they don’t make the switch point controllable from the drivers seat as you can bring the vtec point in much lower, most race cams will pull from 4k or even a tad lower and they needed to create a 6 speed gearbox much earlier to avoid the compromised 5 speed ratios of these cars that are just too long for the track. I had a CRX with the B16A and it was brilliant apart from the issues I mentioned above.
Just to add ....1st gear 10 rev limiter hits then second maybe 2 limiter hits the rest just smash those gears if it's not screaming your not doing it right...vtech yooooo🤣🤣 Great video Misha thank you 👍
errgghhh my old civic used to fall just out of vtec like this when shifting if you didnt bring it to 8800rpm, they really are designed to have rev limiter hit! i got a vtec controller/chip tune and moved the crossover down to 5100 and it made a world of difference!
I love this car and that engine! If I ever wanted to do an engine swap in my Honda Jazz GK5, it would be the B16B series, instead of the more popular K20, which is also cool, but the noise and music from the B16B is really what dreams are made of 🙂
My civic has a b18c4 in the vtech kicks in around 5600rpm and still pulls hard as hell at 130 000 miles. Absolutly adictive sound. I would this chaps vteck kicks in a little later than normal and seems to stugglr to get passed 100mph . Might be the age but would love to see misha in a stock dc2!
See you can be experienced in so many different cars....but to fully understand VTEC...only experienced VTEC drivers know where to shift. But knowing Mischa...give him one for a day....
My k24 accord at 220k miles got k20 head/ oil pump plus 421and 3inch exhaust 😅going strong like there's no tomorrow 😂😊. Proper service and maintenance its the key for Hondas❤
10:15 HAHaha so freakin awesome, just the engine poorin' its heart out at 7500 RPM like "yeah we're going climbing hooraaaay" :D Sounds awesome, what a weird nugget of an engine :)
This will sound impolite, but if Misha didn't have a big passenger on board he would feel a MASSIVE difference in the drivability of the car. Having had two DC2 Integra Type-Rs, I used to dread when people wanted passenger rides at trackdays, as it really dulls the way the car feels, as they're so light, any weight makes a big difference.

Excellent content. It's amazing to see a car that everyone can afford that survives longer than any one of the hypercars could possibly hope to. Thank you very much for this video.
Have a look how much a ek9 civic goes for now
In Australia they are a minimum of $40k AUD for a genuine EK9.

90's engines last forever. My e36 has 303.000 km and everyone that has ridden in it thought it pulled great, even people that are used to e36's and know what a stock m50b25 in good health feels like thought it pulled hard for what it is.

Also, this car with a final drive ratio somewhere around 4.7 instead of stock 4.4 would be a weapon around Nurburgring! Have to use all the rev range at all times though 😄

I have a FN2 Type R with 360K km, still runs great and likes the track!
9:29 the accord coupe pulls by- and all i can do is smile. what a great era of all stars came out of honda factories in the late 80s 90s early 2000s
That scream of vtec never gets old
I love how he was pushing 9K on shifts. Exactly how vtec Hondas love to be driven at redline!
Having Vtec engage at 4500-5000 RPM would help a bunch for the lap
And the engine had 200k miles
If you watch the old Japanese best motoring videos where they raced these and the DC2s around Tsukuba they beat the living shit out of them with downshifts. They were press cars driven by racing drivers though. Their rule seemed to be if it was in the soft cam profile for even a split second, they'd downshift. Even if they landed somewhere 300rpm below redline. You can see the VTEC switches pretty much exactly at where it will land after the most aggressive possible gear change in the previous gear.
I've been waiting for cars and laps like this!!! Ty Misha for the content! VTEC pawa
The interesting thing is that if you really shift at 8.6, you seem to stay above the 6.1 vtec limit. So if you are below the vtec limit it's worth downshifting.
Me screaming downshift Misha everytime he's under lift🤣🤣
100 % love this guys vids and he’s a great driver but he doesn’t know what he’s doing here.
@@benmann6323 yes but the trans don't look to be the original type R the original one is super short ratio and it's at 4k rpm in 5 gear at highway speed

My Rsx Type S block gave out 279,000 miles Tuned on Hondata to a 8600 rpm rev limit. Really impressive considering how much I abused it 😅....put another block that has 148,000 miles. Runs like a champ.
Just sold my ep3, 253,000 miles on the clock. I was using it for track days with red line every time. Unbelievable that it was still taking that abuse and running really sweet. Original cam chain so those of you that panic at 100,000 and think it needs changing, don’t worry!.
Most tuners move vtec rpm down. Smoother powerband and more average power by far.
What a glorious sound that V-TEC makes 🤤

@@ArtVandelayOfficial That's interesting. Can you hear it from the engine sound?
@@MikkoRantalainen Just from the way it accelerates through the gears and having owned a few B series vtec Hondas
Usually the piston rings would be degraded at this mileage
It still runs well though 👍
The vtec crossover sounds great even on a engine with this mileage. With hondas you have to change your driving style a bit where as to stay in its top powerband you have to rev all the way out to stay in vtec and constantly downshift to the highest possible rpm. The cars dont have any low end power as the low end is for fuel efficiency and vtec kicks on the additional cam lobe allowing for the valves to open more creating additional power
Would love to get one of these and rebuild it. Looks like this one is missing a few horses😅. But bravo for keeping it stock and very impressive it still can do the ring with that mileage👏.

My first car was a white 92 prelude 2.3L non vtec still great engine though. It had 490,000km and besides burning a small amount of oil it still ran perfectly no issues at all through its entire life i related the alternator once lol I swapped it out for a used but low km 2.2L vtec bc i wanted to do some mods but why do it on the high mileage H23A1 it's better to start with the H22 obviously. Drove it for another 7 years after the swap. I think it ended up around 330HP (no dyno numbers just guessing by adding each parts avertised gains). The body had like 700,000km or more not sure the speedo was unplugged when I finally retired the old girl. What a great car so reliable and I beat the living hell out of it and I even drove it through the Canadian winters certain years when i had to. I also had a 91 integra that has a similar story of insane punishment and mileage 😄 and now my girl is a 2007 white Acura TL- aspec with this buttery smooth 6speed and i just live this car so much words dont describe, like the seats and comfort level plus the power and looks and it was cheap! Honda engines are just incredible. Been a fan since my first 50cc Honda dirtbike as a little guy can you tell? 😆
Awesome lap, as a owner of a k20z3, its really impressive that 320.000km, the owner took care of the engine...
I don't know why honda changed the vtec engagement to 6.100rpm at the B16B, the b16a's are at 5.500, it would help a lot at this ocasion!
the gauge is out by a bit.. he also revs to 9k, and the hard cut is at 8.4k, so thats about right at 5.5k for the vtec engage.
The B16A also has much smaller cams than the EK9 and the EK9 cams wouldn't make any usable power below 6 grand to begin with.
This car is quite popular for racing from where i live and always see them with modifications and upgrades meant for racing
300000+ km and still the VTEC kicks in :) But need to rev above 6k by downshift often to get fun of it.
Fit a 4.9 final drive. Or if you want to get fancy use the integra dc2 98 1-3 gears and keep your ek9 4- 5 gears. Coupled with a 4.9 or 5.1 final drive. Will transform it and it will stay in vtec range
Ek9 and 96 jdm dc2 have the same gearbox specs just different case number IDs
. S80 4.4fd is dc2 96 jdm
S80 4.7fd is dc2 98 euro and jdm
and s4c 4.4fd is ek9 .
Dc2 is b18c 1800cc so the makes up for the 1600cc shortfall of the b16b ek9
Superb! Looking forward to see the new one out there as well

Honda: The Power of Dreams 🔰 #oldisgold
As a Civic owner, I would not change mine for anything. Well done Ranulph, looks amazing! Great IG too.
Just to add ....1st gear 10 rev limiter hits then second maybe 2 limiter hits the rest just smash those gears if it's not screaming your not doing it right...vtech yooooo🤣🤣
Great video Misha thank you 👍

OMG, when that VTEC kicks in slightly above 6k.
errgghhh my old civic used to fall just out of vtec like this when shifting if you didnt bring it to 8800rpm, they really are designed to have rev limiter hit! i got a vtec controller/chip tune and moved the crossover down to 5100 and it made a world of difference!
Nice car with good sound! hope to bring my supercharged crx someday to the ring its a bucketlist thing!
I love this car and that engine! If I ever wanted to do an engine swap in my Honda Jazz GK5, it would be the B16B series, instead of the more popular K20, which is also cool, but the noise and music from the B16B is really what dreams are made of 🙂
