    Although the D6 Duo Pro lists for $150, it is often on sale for MUCH LESS. Here's a link to RaceDayQuads for $118. This is the AC/DC version with built in 200W power supply.

    @JB I've been charging three 1500 mAh Turnigy Graphene packs at 10C every charge since I bought them. Each pack has over 100 cycles on it so far, and I haven't noticed any degradation in power or flight time. The packs don't even get warm during the charge. Takes about 7 minutes to charge. Probably wouldn't be good on a car battery drawing 15A charges on a regular basis. I have an AC/DC 300W Reactor charger, and nearly always charge off AC. Is charging at 10C ok for these batteries, or have I drunk the Graphene kool-aid? :p

    • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can get away with 10C if the battery is perfectly healthy. If it is unhealthy it can result in a bug surprise.

    • @nihilisticone4215
      @nihilisticone4215 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JoshuaBardwell None of the packs are swollen at all, or have any dents or dings. I check cell voltages right after every flight, looking for signs of a weak cell. I never discharge below 3.6V per cell. I also check IR after each charge (I know this isn't the most accurate way of checking IR, but hopefully it would tip me off that the pack is going bad if IR increased significantly). And I charge in my garage on a cheap rolling metal tool cabinet with 6 feet of clearance from anything flammable. I've been meaning to build one of those battery bunkers for charging safety. Do you think the whole graphene battery thing is hype? The OP in the RCgroups thread for Graphene batteries swears he has put a bunch of these batteries through 10C charges to 1000 cycles, and they were still usable, but down to about 80% capacity.

    Good stuff, I went for the toolkit M6D couple months back shortly after your review. Gamble seems to be paying off so far although the extra features would have definitely been worth a couple extra dollars had this charger been out.
    Also as a DIY fix for your noisy power supply Laptop charger cords are nothing but AC to DC power supplies, most are 19V+ the one I have is 6 amps, which isn't much, but for charging my little 2s 650mah RDQ batteries it's more then I need. No fan, No noise, typically dirt cheap or free from old broken laptops, I've seen them rated as high as 10-12 amps, little surgery, graft an XT60 on the end and silence is golden lol.

    Did you compare the charge cycle times at the same charge rate of the D6 Dual Lite vs the D6 Duo Pro? I have an ISDT D2 (Balancing Current: 1A/cell x2 ) charger that has similar balance amperage spec as the D6 Dual Lite (Balance Current: 1000mA * 2). The D6 Duo Pro (Balance Current: 1600mA * 2 ) >50%, which I also have, and WOW does it make a BIG difference in reducing how much time it takes complete the balance portion of the charge cycle at the end, especially the more cells in your battery and if you're parallel charging. This isn't anything to sneeze at in time. The ISDT D2 is so annoyingly slow in comparison to the D6 Duo Pro on 6s packs, if I'm aiming to charge 3s packs for my toothpicks, 4s packs for my heavier 3" quads, and 6s packs for my 5" quads, when parallel charging, the 6s packs always always always go on the D6 Duo Pro. If the Lite is similarly annoyingly slow, which I would expect it to be, that's another BIG reason to go with the D6 Duo Pro over the Lite.

    Some radios use USB, and since it’ll sit on my desk then it can charge my phone too
    Too bad with the noise, which could’ve been fixed with a temp controller for that fan, considering it isn’t cheap.
    Also excellent idea to explain charging rates based on battery capacity... most beginners have no clue and lots of miss-information out there that could be very dangerous 🔥

    You're reviews are always very thorough though it would be nice if you discussed the load capability of the balance feature. I purchased 4 of the small Toolkit charges based on reviews only to find that though they were powerful the balancer could only discharge less than 1 amp. So on a 5000 6s or parallel charging if one cell is off it takes forever for the charger to complete the balancing. Have gone back to my Ichargers for this reason. Thanks for the great reviews.

    Like you said if you are doing huge parallel arrays or massive batteries do the math to see if it's enough for you're specific needs. If you dont do those things it's plenty. One thing I wanted to add for the math doers out there is to consider switching losses. Efficiency of the charger is usually 65-90% depending on input and output voltage. This means input amps wont all make it to the battery so the input amp limit could be practically considered around 75% (conservatively) of whats stated.
    Could make a difference if you were on the edge of it just barely being good enough for your needs.

    I don`t get it. Your linked charger has 1600mah balance current but the one in banggood, which is the same but called HOTA P6, has only 1000mah balance current. Might there be difference of firmware or is it misspelled on one of the sites.
    I started looking at that parameter because of one of your videos and couple of my batteries balance charge sooo long (ISDT Q6 and ToolkitRc M6).

  • @fpvkabo
    @fpvkabo 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Isn't external discharge mean to divert the wasted power to the lipo u are using to power the charger? And thus don't use a AC power supply but a lipo to run the charger to discharge to maybe a bigger 20000mah lipo to discharge your running quad lopos for storage

    • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      External discharge sends the wasted power through a load resistor. Regenerative discharge does what you are describing.

    • @fpvkabo
      @fpvkabo 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      But the manual says it has regenerate discharge via USB C, not to lipo like the TookitRC M8, but it has something rather then pouring the excess into a resistor to do nothing but get hot and dangerous if not done properly, goto c-batt bank or resistor?

  • @salernod2812
    @salernod2812 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Joshua, does the ReGen Discharge dump the power back to the large battery while making sure the source battery discharges balanced at storage capacity?. I have a large 10,000mah 6S battery that I carry with me along with the Hota D6 Pro to charge batteries offline at the field. When I return home, I then dump excess charges from unused batteries back to my large 10,000 mah battery using my Hota D6 Pro, I do this by plugging in unused batteries on the back of the HOTA D6 Pro and the large battery on the front, the only bad thing is that I have to monitor the input voltage so I can disconnect it when it reaches 14.8, then I put the battery back on the front of the charger to balance the cells with outlet power.

    • @dirtfpv
      @dirtfpv 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Q200 is a disappointment. Try charging on any channel at faster than 6.2 Amps on a 2S. It can't do it without derating another channel. It shares amperage, but you have to manually adjust it. 50W max, per channel, by default on AC power. I regret buying the Q200. It's fine for charging a bunch of smaller batteries, like 1500mAh up to 6S, but if you have large RC car batteries (I have a few 7600mAh 2s packs), it's a let down. Cheapo HTRC dual charger is cheaper to buy two of them, and up to 10A per channel.

There's been enough problems with past ToolkitRC chargers that I'm not entirely sure I'd want to use one considering any lack of reliability and proper operation could literally result in a house fire. One thing that bugs me about Hobbymate and Hota chargers is the poorly thought out menu selections under the task category. They have “power supply, charge, discharge, ext discharge, storage, and balance”. This is where I love the simplicity of an iSDT charger as they have only charge, discharge, and storage which is what I use 99.9% of the time. At least Hobbymate could put a little thought into the UI and list the most common tasks at the top of the list, or better yet an option to select which tasks we want displayed.

    Just a note for people who use "car batteries" to charge lipos. It's a bad idea unless you have the engine running. Car batteries are not designed to be discharged and recharged on a regular basis. They are meant to be charged all the time, and provide large amounts of current for starting a vehicle. If you want to do this the right way, always buy a deep cycle battery. Problem is that deep cycle batteries aren't always designed to provide huge cold cranking amps for car starting.

    • @dirtfpv
      @dirtfpv 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JoshuaBardwell That's definitely the way to do it. A few packs are fine, but an afternoon at the air field on a regular basis could be problematic.

    That fan on the PSU is a real mistake. If it would only ramp up when charging, they you could leave the charger on all the time and not really notice. With the fan noise you'll always have to unplug it when not in use.

    300 watts divided by 16.8 volts equals 17.85 amps.
    1500 4s (standard lipo size for a 5 inch drone).... max charge rate 1.5 amps. (Never charge over 1c.)
    17.85 amps > 1.5 amps.
    Yes. 300 watts is enough. Way more than you'll ever need for a 5" class drone.
