Great sounds you have dialed in!! I use the HD500x without an amplifier. I used to lug around a MESA Boogie combo amp for years. I loved the way it sounded but I honestly can get really close to the same tones using the amp modeling and going direct into the board. That amp got really heavy around the time I turned 60 lol
Hey Troy. I play electric guitar and acoustic at Columbia Grove Covenant in East Wenatchee WA, and i want to say those settings are BEAUTIFUL!!! I love the delay settings and i sort of caught an edge riff. Love that riff. By the way i saw on the ground while you were showing off your pedal board that you had a sheet from the planning center. I just like all the sounds. I have a Pod Hd500x and i love using it. Except the tuner haha. By the way i really like the walk through. It inspired me to get cool shimmering sounds out of my pod. Thank you Ian Buchanan
Great stuff! I do mine a little differently but we're both getting the same end results. Good on you for doing the power tube crunch while running delays too, I do that too. I run two mic'd marshall class5 amps (small church) in stereo that I can attenuate using the orpheus777 attenuator, roll my guitar volume for cleans and use a muff for a lead boost. And I use a triple flashback for all my delay needs. Once I grab an HOF reverb I'll be set! :D
Hey Patrick, I couldn't figure out how to reply directly to your comment. Hopefully you will get this. Yes, you can control the internal effects on the HD500 with the external expression pedal as well. I sometime layer delays in the HD500 with other effects in the H9 and control the levels with the same expression pedal.
If you just run in ear monitors the POD HD500 does just fine all alone. I realized sound differences were in my head and were more a result of thinking I could achieve the same tone out of a monitor wedge as I could a 4x12 cab
Beautiful job Troy. Ive been creating a lot of different patches, either because I'm not able to find the patches for the songs I'm playing at the services or some of the patches that are free or $$$ online are not up to par of what the songs even sound like. This creates hours of extra time to have to build the patches. I tried finding the patch for Restless Love but no luck so of coarse I'm trying to build it. I've been really trying to use the Particle Reverb & the Delay/Auto-Volume Echo to create a Swell like key boards during the duration of the song & a Swell on a different set-up during the little solo riffs. I dunno, it's kinda giving me a headache here. Have you built this one yet?? Bryan
Nice rig. Have you upgraded anything since this video? I'm currently using just the HD500. It's always been underrated for sure, and even to this day still all I need. My main worship patch uses the J800 amp model. I switch between 2 different delays, chorus when it fits/we're not using a track/worship leader isn't using a pad effect on the keyboard, and I have the drive on the amp model set so it's right on the edge of breakup. Sounds good for atmospheric tones, plus I can pull the delay & modulation off and it sounds great when I push it for Graves Into Gardens.
Troy just saw your video love it I was interested in buying the same guitar carrying case you have do you have the number or the companies name to order I like that you can hide cables Thank you so much your friend Karl
Hi sir, I'm jong, I'm a church guitar in Faith Tabernacle Church here Philippines. I just want to ask, on that guitar effect, what are the songs that can be best applicable on those effects? That you.
Hi Jong, these effects can be used o just about anything by syncing the delay time to the song tempo if I understand you correctly. Adjusting the effect level with the expression pedal is another way of customizing the sound on the fly until it feels right.
Troy, thanks for sharing your rig. I have a similar set up with the POD HD500x and some external drive effects (Spaceman Effects). 1. I've been looking for a pedal board without building it myself that can meet my needs. I just switched to the Voodoo2 power (the One Spot generated way too much noise). 2. How are you interfacing your external pedals with the HD500 and the HD500 to the amp? Are you using the effects loop setting or just going straight in the Guitar input. (I've found that the HD500 compresses the tone from external pedals (you lose fidelity... but maybe not enough to care about).
+Chris Carlson Hi Chris. Yeah, I just put the drive pedals in front of the HD500. I haven't noticed any real change in tone. (Nothing compared to an Ernie Ball volume pedal.) Not sure putting the pedals in the loop of the HD500 would really matter the way I use it. The buffer in the Suhr boost really keeps the signal sounding good. I really like this pedal pad board. Very cool.
+Troy Kennedy the Pedal Pad is a great solution, a little on the pricey side, but a great solution. I use a boost->drive->optical tremelo-> into the Guitar In. however depending on which amp I use, I've also broken up the chain for better tone (in my opinion) by running through my external pedals (drives and such)-> amp pre-amp -> effects loop out -> PODHD500 guitar in -> PODHD500 line out -> amp effects loop in. this is not the exact 4 cable method that people rave about, but I found was the best way to get the full spectrum from my pedals. You also got me interested in adding a second expression pedal instead of switching back and forth on the single one. I also play worship music, and this just reiterates to me the value of the under-rated POD HD500 - you just need a second job to learn how to tweak all the settings.
+Chris Carlson Hah, yeah. Time is an asset. :) I think 4 cable is great if you are running a ton of gain. Otherwise the delays and verbs are fine in the front end. Sounds like you have a great setup. Have fun!
Whats the dimensions of your pedalboard? After watching this I got the urge to integrate my HD500x into a pedalboard(as opposed to a standalone) but my 16x30 isnt quite long enough, and it looks like you have room to spare.
dus65 Mine is 38" by 15" I believe. www.pedalpad.com/products/iii-series-pedal-boards#!/AXS-XL-III-Extra-Long-W-Single-Hinged-Pedal-Surface-with-12-Slots/p/27578298/category=6472051
Troy, what verb on the H9 are you using to achieve that "nice long reverb" at the end of video? Also, as someone moving from playing lead guitar and doing background vocals in corporate worship to being a worship leader, I'm trying to adopt a similar set up as you with the minimalistic approach. With that being said, I won't have as much time as I'd like to edit patches on hd500 due to the hours at my normal job, but with H9 control, I'm finding to be a little easier to manipulate via the iPad. Do you have a "standard" hd500 patch that you use with specific effects in each block and just edit/move the patches In the H9 for the set that week? Or do you start from scratch each week? Sorry for the long post, thanks!
+Jordan Carson Hey Jordan, no problem. I like the Black Hole verb for long patches. Dark Matter is nice as well. The HD500 patch is just one I use that is for midi control. Copy it into a few spots. No amps and a few effects that I can turn on and off. Mostly a delay that is controlled with the expression pedal. It's pretty easy to set up as the patches at the beginning of a group start with program control 001and go up. I then set up the patches on the H9 and put them in order starting with 001. Have fun!
Stephen Whitney If the Nighttrain has an effects loop 4 cable would work. Otherwise just put it all up front. Delays g=only get messy if you have a ton of gain.
Have you ever thought a driven amp distorts the reverb tone? The effects loop can solve this. I never use reverb due to the natural and horrible reverb of most venues.
For sure. If you have a ton of gain, then the time based affects get pretty messy and they need to be in the loop. But since I don't run really that much gain it's not usually a problem.
No problem. I disengage any of the amp or speaker simulations on the unit. Then make sure that the master volume is set between about 3 o'clock or two maximum. Somewhere in there is unity gain. :-) Also, I use the studio output setting in the output menu. That one sounds the most transparent to me. I hope this helps!
Thank you very much. Then, the last question. You say do not use a modular amplifier on the pedalboard, but only send to direct effects to my amplifier?
Troy do you ever have volume issues when switching patches on your hd500? I have the 300 and when I plug it in it has not saved the volume I had set. So one may be real quiet and the next patch blasting. I usually use just an amp and a pedal most of the time. Anyway, thanks.

Really? I have this pedal. I use it direct into the board. The weight of this vs tube amp.. no comparison.! I love how easy it is to carry and load. I feel like I'm cheating lol
+isaac wine Hah! No worries. People either love them or hate them. He still makes the best feeling guitars I have ever played. A really great guy, too. Very cool to worship leaders.
Hmmm...none of it if I understand the question. Now, since it is my personal gear it would be a write off for me as a professional musician. But that has nothing to do with the church not for profit status if that's what you are getting at.
+srv3fender hmmm...not sure I get the connection between mu guitar and the call to be a worship leader. Regardless, I didn't pay 4k for my Tyler. I have been leading worship since 1988. And in that time the average price I paid for an electric has been about $400: Fernandes guitars, Squires, used beat up Fenders etc... as a matter of fact I have a couple of Squires right now that I use. The Tyler was a special thing for a guy who has been at it for 20 plus years. You don't need any of this to be a worship leader. What you do need is a passion and a calling. The rest will follow. Grace and peace to you, bro.
+Troy Kennedy I wish more people like you had that attitude. My church they use mesa amps, Suhr guitars, and a slew of $300 pedals, all that for just playing chords and single note tones. I could understand the equipment if there was great guitar virtuoso style songs being played. Lincoln Brewster played a strat into a line6 straight into the board, and it sounded great. Churches here in Texas are all about the money, and showing it off. Sad
+srv3fender Thanks for the kind words. I would probably cut your church a little slack. I certainly don't think you need that stuff to lead worship. But if you have the resource to get better sounds that will translate well in a larger venue more power to you. But there is a danger of the gear creating some unnecessary sideways energy as it can take too much focus. At the end of the day, God is more concerned about the posture of our hearts than the posture of our bodies or, dare I say, the phatness of our tone. :)
It's one of those weird ones where they dance and fall all over the place i'm guessing. I can't understand why [people spend so much to play for an hour a week to super corny songs.
HI, it is a typical larger more or less conservative Christian church. We don't have anyone "falling all over the place." :) Not yet anyway. Music is so subjective. Everyone has their preferences. Modulated delay wth volume pedal. Added the mojotone overdrive as well.

That's a combination pf the H9 shimmer effect with modded delay from the Hd500.
