i don’t think this is a leftover from a dev system but rather its likely part of a recovery mode nintendo used to repair damaged systems
It was used for that and also for developers to fix banner and wii mail bricks (those can happen easily if you mess up a small thing)
@@someonesgarbagethat could be useful for repair shops too or if the user is experienced enough to fix it themselves
Saved my Wii back in the day when it got the rare mail brick.

@@iancamilosanchez Worked just fine, just couldn't use the wii message board and had to do it every time I started the console, otherwise it would boot into "The system files are corrupted."

there is more than what happens in the maintence mode, it can also disable the dynamic network icons which can show info when connected to the internet (like tournament info in mario kart channel icon or news info displayed in news channel icon.)
I think maintenance mode was also used for kiosks, but im not really sure
can confirm. walmart near me had a wii as a display thing back in the day and I saw the mailbox and tried to empty it and it said dev mode so I thought it was bc it was a demo.
Imagine being a kid and not realizing you are holding down on the + and - button and then you lose all your digital games 💀

Why should this have remained a secret? seems over dramatic, especially because it's just a limited version of normal mode.

This is designed to hide potentially sensitive info, so that someone working on your console doesn't see it. This is why the Message Board is disabled. It's not a developer feature.
who else be sexting on the Wii Message board???
This is to prevent bricks (the console not working) the Wii message board and other small features are disabled cause those can be the main cause of a brick!
@@someonesgarbageI dunno I think this persons right. If Nintendo knew the code used on their channel is bad, they probably would’ve fixed it, instead of applying this obscure patch.
I still hold my belief as the Wii homebrewg wiki discovered that Nintendo and the devs were using this to patch out channel bricks and mail bricks (they can happen very often if you are not careful). And also other companies were developing for the Wii so it wasn't just a Nintendo thing
They could just turn it off and back on again to see all your data. I don't get it
Note: this also works on vWii, i tried it. It also still says about the message board, even though it doesnt exist at all in vWii
vWii is just just the wii os in a wii u. Nintendo did not really change things in the software

This was meant to recover from bricks. Nothing else...

@someonesgarbage and the reason why I said that is because I like to find potentially new exploits that are unpatchable
Due to the method of activation it's probably a software feature, although that wouldn't explain why it hasn't been patched

Not really. Only if it was a mail/channel brick. But maybe it could have been useful

A lot of (mostly korean wiis) have bricked for some ungodly reason. And to fix it you had to know a number. And to know that number you had to do a button combo on the gamecube controller to see the menu. this thing is not realated to maintaince mode@@horses.1079
Can be useful, thanks ! Do a mode like this exist on the 3DS? I know there is a safe mode but it's only for upgrading it
I don't think there is a safe mode for 3ds (stock firmware). When you mod it, you may be able to restore your 3ds (in case of something happening) with the godmode9 menu.
I remember a friend did this on my Wii U in Wii mode!

Sorry for the late reply, almost all the music that I use for my videos come from the Wii U soundtrack or the 3DS soundtrack. I don't know the specific song but I know that the song is from the Wii U system soundtrack (just search it on youtube) :)

How does it "recover" anything though? You can boot into it but you can't go into messages, so you cant erase a mail bomb?
I think it erases the messages once booted up again (minus the playtime messages)

How did you access the Wii menu through an emulator?
Dolphin supports emulating the Wii menu. It has an option to install it.

Yep. It is running in dolphin. Dolphin emulates a real wii. You should try it out on a real Wii / vwii(Wii mode on Wii u) :)
dolphin is emulator for wii, dolphin supports real wii menu and its working!
