I’m already mad in love with this project. I’d like to make a suggestion of overhauling or tweaking the blast zone explosion’s to be more fitting for Animelee
This looks so gorgeous. I hope that this mod breathes new life into Melee. It looks so much like the Smash Ultimate commercial that went viral, it's crazy! Even Sakurai would be impressed!
at 3:02 so this is super cool, however making the color white instead of green will make catching miss tech a lot harder when tech chasing as most good players will be using that green as an indication for missed tech
I love this, only thing I would prefer different is the changes you did on the on hit effects, the green is a little too strong, in the original is not filled up with green all the way, with the new it stands out even if it's only a few frames, actually it's quite distracting but everything else is great
These are really cool. Animelee already pops out of the screen and this takes it to another level. The lightning effects are my favorite, which is even better for me because i play Mewtwo.
You're gonna trip when you see the new update I've been working on. I have seriously upgraded the lightning and smoke and it makes mewtwo feel so cool 😇 Thank you for the kind words!
This is a really great Energy Texture Overhaul pack. Only part of it that I'm more on the fence about is the updated hit effects. I personally prefer the vanilla effects, especially the blue and green glow on the hit effects from 2:52-2:54. I think they look more on point, and somehow higher res to my eyes. Not sure why though. The other effects on the other hand is definitely a needed improvement from the vanilla ones considering the Animelee style.
I have received a ton of great feedback regarding the on hit textures, and I think everyone's points are very compelling. Moving forward, I think that I'll exclude most of these changes from the updates and if for some reason people really want them, I'll upscale them and re-release them as an optional pack.
i'm not sure, but at 3:20 or so it kinda looks like you changed the texture for the flash that appears when you get hit into the ground and miss a tech? it looks like you changed it from bright green to a really transparent grey, which would be a really jarring change to people (like me) that use the green flash as a visual cue when reaction techchasing. otherwise, this mod's actually really awesome and pretty, thanks for continuing to work on it!
@@guitaroach A melee remastered with the kind of polish Ultimate has in it's audio and visual design would be a HUGE step up from these mods. It's great these mods are a thing but you can't compete with big budget triple A dev teams that are really good what they're doing. It's the reason it physically hurts to watch other platform fighters than Smash
@@Bladieblah I mean yea obviously it goes without saying that having a AAA budget would do visual wonders for a melee remaster, but there's NO way that Nintendo wouldnt also fuck up how the game works AND provide an online experience & responsiveness as good as Slippi. At this point, an official remaster would be more dissapointing than beneficial IMO.
@@guitaroachthat's an understatement, an official Nintendo Melee HD release would be one of the worst possible things that could happen to the community. It would split the playerbase amongst new players trying Melee HD and longtime players who would never switch over because the game would probably suck. It would throw the whole Melee ecosystem into chaos
Right? The Animelee team has really gone above and beyond what I thought possible graphically for melee. So much so that, like you indicated, this style could really fit a number of fighting games.
these visual mods are not something I like to use personally since i'm so used to CRTs, but these effects look really cool! The only thing i'd be careful with is changing the no-tech effect (as shown at 3:02) - as the big green splash off the missed tech is very important for tech-chasing imo. You might want to have something more similar to the vanilla effect so you don't throw off people expecting that visual indicator. Otherwise good work! the smoke effects look really awesome
Thanks for making the fire smokey! It's something I really like about Melee's fire that later Smash Bros entries (and other fighting games) don't really have. I do think the landing effect is a little wonky, though, but overall this is a huge improvement for all the effects. You should totally go for trying to get money from this if you can, and maybe that will demonstrate to others how they can do so. Little corporate fiefs running off with profits as their company dissolves does not mean artists and programmers should go unpaid. Making mainline publications available for free but taking monthly donations and letting donors beta test and give early feedback has worked for other projects, at least.
Thank you so much for your feedback. The response to this project has really inspired me to pursue some of the avenues you've suggested. I am particularly fond the idea of setting up a Patreon for beta testers to give early access and help me get feedback on changes.
3:04 why did you change the impact effect on the ground for falco's d-air from green to Grey? I feel like the green was a really nice stylistic choice :c Other than that, holy shit this is so good
i adore melee and cant wait to get my controller to start playing ! ill def be using these textures as well your the best man ! if i make any vids ill give a link to this vid :D
High key recommend not changing the ground missed tech animation from the green color or anything related to it, since people actually use that in game play to reaction tech chase. Otherwise cool changes
This is feedback I've received from multiple people, so I'm highly considering axing that aspect of the upgrade entirely. I do not want to mess with people's ability to play the game whatsoever. Someone mentioned that it can affect a player's ability to RTC which is no good at all.
i would love the "hit freeze" (i don't what is called but when the game stops to sell a hit) to just be longer in melee but that looks like an impossible task for a mod
You know what's interesting is that (totally speculating here) I really don't think a mod like that would be all the difficult to whip up. I think the main concern would just be the time it would take to change each individual value. But I don't know that for certain. I think this might be a feature that non melee fans might really appreciate, but I know that messing with timings/muscle memory might be a strict no go for die hard melee players. It is really fun to think about though!
@@Professor_Randl i meant like kill only. but i think it would be hard because they are static values. the amount of freeze scales with knockback making it very tricky to do without breaking everything. veterans shouldn't have to worry if it only worked on kill moves at kill precents. if you change the values outright then it would be more messed up
Great job fs. But is anyone else almost barely able to notice the changes? Like maybe it’s cause I’m a bit color deficient but idk I can only notice the fire looks a little different mid game but besides that vanilla animelee textures didn’t look jarring to me 😂
I actually was really hoping to lean on the side of "I can't tell the difference" instead of "wtf this is way too different" just in case people had grown super attached to the original game. It's actually quite a challenge as I generally prefer more dramatic changes and I'm always having to convince myself to chill haha.
Really nice textures makes the game kinda pop out and really compliments animelee's art style, also does anyone know what the background music is its really nice.
Thanks so much for the kind words! I actually wrote the song on this video. I'm hoping to release the album on spotify at some point, but I just haven't had the time haha. About the best I could do is send you a download lmao.
... Nintendo should hire you, help you put a team together to cell shade the fuck out of their game cube games and put them on the switch. This looks absolutely amazing. Props to your efforts.
That's probably a question that only Vancity and the Animelee team can answer to be honest. If I had to guess, I would assume not. Simply because it would probably be more effort for people who aren't a fan of the changes to remove them than it would be for fans of the changes to add it to their game after the fact. With that being said, David Kimball's Animelee M-EX Template (essentially a community upgrade to Animelee) has incorporated this pack by default. That's a fantastic project I suggest to anyone who's looking to get into applying mods to their game!
I think the vanilla onhit effects, being more sharp and rigid, fit better. Only an opinion but the new ones are a little too squiggly. Otherwise it's looking good though
Hey at 4:05 to 4:15 how did you edit the camera to sort of follow the characters while being at a different angle than normal? Was this all manually edited using the blender External Camera tool and keyframes? Or was this automated in any significant way?
Yes! I used Kellz' External Melee Cam tool with the Virtucam IOS app to help automate the process. I made a video on that a few weeks ago if you're looking for more information on my process. And if you need further help, consider joining the EMC discord.
