I feel the addition of the tips and in game notes are not really making the game “easier.” Since the original dont starve released, the game has only gotten more and more complex. As a new player many years ago you only had to keep track of a few things. Now there is so many complex bosses, item interactions, and threats, that it would be very difficult for any new player in dst to hope to keep track of it. I’d say the accessibility they have added in dst counteract the insane amount of complexity, balancing out the difficulty. I like to think of the relaxed mode as an alternative mode, moreso like practice for actual survival.
I started playing about a week ago, and as someone who got here from o2 not included I appreciate the scrap book for being some bit of familiarity. All I need to do now is to figure out how to attack with a touch pad
I am totally in love with these new documentary style videos. I bet they take an absurd amount of time and effort to make, but I love every single thing about them. It's absolutely worth it.
I remember how challenging the game was when I first started to play it back in the All's Well That Maxwell update. I remember one of my favorite mods was a Hatsune Miku one where she was given a gun with craftable ammo as well as some kind of slowing ammo, but the slowing ammo would crash the game all the time when you tried to use it. She also spawned in with a glowing green leek which dealt very little damage but gave you a small ring of infinite light like Willow's lighter. The gun ammo was actually pretty expensive to craft and dealt the same damage as a blow dart so all in all it was a fairly balanced recipe since you needed rotten eggs to make gunpowder and the rotten eggs were always a pain for me to get. I either had to wait for pengull's to spawn in winter and then let them despawn naturally to leave their eggs behind, or sacrifice a bunch of good meat to a bird to get eggs and then let them rot over time. I actually probably had a harder time playing the modded character than anything by default since, while the light and the gun was great, her stats were basic at best and had no other upside. I think she also dealt less damage like Wendy but I can't really remember that much. All I do remember is that it was my go-to character for the majority of my singleplayer life until I got wind of DST and started to watch content related to it. I actually only ever managed to get it after the end of the first Forge event which I just barely missed by like a week. After that I played the game off and on again from then until now where I'm currently in a "I don't feel like doing anything" sort of mood. I also like how they tried to nerf Willow to make her seem less like a default griefer character but it did literally nothing to change the stigma attached to her by that point. As a matter of fact, even though most people I see run public servers with 6 player slots, they still automatically kick anyone they don't know immediately. So fast to the point where I log in and wait for the loading screen, and then once I spend 5 minutes waiting for the screen to go away I get the 'You have been disconnected' or 'You have been banned' message. I love how people make public servers just to deny anyone from getting in like....just make a password you troglodyte. Stop being an asshole and insta-banning anyone and everyone who you don't want to play with and just password protect your world, it's literally as simple as just typing a single character into the field. The chances of someone brute forcing the password which can be a random number of characters and any random combination of them is slim to none and would be almost impossible. Aside from that, the game is a blast to play with friends and good people. I joined a server in the recent months and ended up playing with a group, regularly, with some fun mods, for over 3000 days before the server got refreshed for the update and some mod fixes (since it was common for mod incompatibility messages to appear even though everything was up to date between players and server.) Aside from that it was a really good time and we had a lot of fun. Also, unpopular opinion, but I think that the Palmcone trees are better than the lunar trees. They're easier to plant and take care of, provide the same if not more logs when you dig up their stumps and stuff, and any unused palmcone scales can act as a single log for fuel on the fire, meaning you can turn all your other logs into armor or planks and use the cone scales exclusively for fuel. Their only downside is they don't duplicate themselves with multiple saplings and only drop one to renew the cycle, meaning you have a definitive amount unless you camp the unnatural portal for a few days to get more sprouts. Aside from that I think they're far superior. They also don't spawn treeguards much like the lunar trees because there's no treeguard variant for them....yet.
some things i wanna note -I feel like the absurdly strong nightmare creatures and top hat are amazing ideas. Having a constant fear of going insane just doesn't happen, despite that being the point of insanity. I also feel like the top hat was balanced with insanity auras and not being able to use other head gears. -Lack of thermal stones sounds awesome -custom endings sound frigging awesome
As a 17 years old who played this game since 2013 and knew about it since 2012, this video feels like the story of my life. Every update you mentioned in video brought more and more memories, watching this video felt almost as good as playing the game for the first time 10 years ago
To this day, I still remember my first hound attack. The first time I found out that birds in cages give eggs. My first two-screen-spanning tooth-trap pit. So many good memories...
Oh my gosh, I'm also 17, and first picked this game up around 2012 - 2013 as well! I remember my brother showing me it way back then and me getting really scared of the dark and getting chased by my first tallbird, while I'm still not that good at it (Only have gotten close to beating a full year), It's one of my favorites games just purely off of how much fun I had over the years!
Same, but i'm currently 18. Don't Starve has been a major part of my life. I first remember knowing about Don't Starve in 2013, by a Brazilian channel named "Cê Joga?" (The channel is still alive but apparently something happened with the creator and he stopped posting years ago.) As a Brazilian kid at the time, i didn't knew about Steam, so in order to play i found those virus sites and downloaded a Pirated Russian version of the game, it was so bad, the right part of the HUD was black and you couldn't see some of the status or days. I was so fascinated by the game that i made a cover for the school book featuring Wilson. (I sadly don't have it anymore.) In 2016 i downloaded Steam and bought both Don't Starve Together and Don't Starve. I don't know, i just wanted to write my experience with Don't Starve, because it's a game that basically developed my interest for games in general, and i feel like i had to share that memory with others who probably had the same experience with Don't Starve
i love the detail of the diffrence between his bloons video and this videos thumbnail the bloons one was a monkey pieceing the history of the bloons story going crazy and stuff but the dont strave one is just wilsion and maxwell playing chess representing the back and fourth of the devs and the community
My jaw dropped upon hearing Totalbiscuit's voice again, it's been so long and I grew up watching his videos. He was a shining beacon of this platform, you sir earned a like and sub!
I remember my first winter, i was so proud to make it, and then i think a few days later i died. Or the first dearclops. Chilling at base one night, and then i heard a noise I've never heard before, then i saw it. He walked towards my base and i thought "I'm good" then he smashed my plants, chests, firepit, etc. And then in just a couple swings i was dead, but for some reason i started over amd kept going. So addictive.
The final 15 or so minutes of this video are a fantastic review of the current state of the game and ending it out of nowhere with no wrap up or outro adheres to the philosophy that the real value of watching this video was the experience of watching it, not the summary I got at the end, bravo Vince
@@MusicComet No, most people who hate difficulty options do so because they use gatekeeping as a substitute for a personality. Case in point, the guy who showed up after you to call names.
@@FelisImpurrator Lol, good one. Honestly, I actually misunderstood a bit so I agree. I was thinking about lack of difficulty options instead of their inclusion, so like pokemon for example.
2:12:45 I totally agree with the new content being exciting! The planar damage and defense systems alongside the new weapons, armors, enemies, and environmental hazards really give a fresh breath of air to the game. Its really cool to see such big changes into this game that's 10 years old now, and I'm really excited to see where this new content line is going.
The Brightshades need a tweek or two. The fact I have to battle the suckers, every other day, when I actually want to just chill in my base and do some chores, is a real pain in the neck. Not helped in the least by the fact that the 'shades come in 3's, deal a ton of damage, and aren't all that squishy either. And worst of all - once the rift is open, you can't really close it, unless you exit the game and use world settings to remove it temporarily. Basically - keep the stuff in, just either reduce the frequency of the brightshades, or make them less of a pain to deal with.
@@VG-fk6nk i agree, they should add anti brightshade for plants or areas that you get from a boss or something. For now the best strategy i can think of is placing houndius shootius in your base near farms and plants

love to see OrangE's dedication to the Don't Starve series, even after creating Fear&Hunger series all by himself. this man is a genius. Edit: Also OrangE, can you add "severe an*l bleed" status effect to DST too? that one's a classic
The point about Intrinsic vs Extrinsic rewards honestly reminds me of modern Minecraft. Current Minecraft is all about progression, get your Netherite Armor, get your mending enchantments, kill the Ender Dragon, get your elytra, and then stop playing because you "did everything," when people are asked what they want from updates they say "more progression."
It even somewhat applies to modern Don’t Starve. During the Return of Them era of DST, a lot of people would start treating the game like a roguelike, where they would wait for the next character referesh before then rushing to kill the Fuelweaver with the new character and waiting for the next update. After the addition of the Celestial Champion, players would go for it instead of or alongside the Fuelweaver, but not much else changed. With the current update line, From Beyond, there’s no longer any end goal - there’s always something to do thanks to the rifts and new bosses. Additionally, the Insight trees encourage you to take your time with a character and not rush to kill the Fuelweaver on Day 2. It encourages you to set your own goals, whereas Return of Them era encouraged you to just go fight Fuelweaver/Champion. (Similar thing applies to with the lore - whereas aNR and RoT focused on adding new lore information like the ancient arthopod civilization or the Fuelweaver or the portal or the eye in aNR or Alter and Wagstaff returning in RoT, From Beyond focuses on fleshing out what we already know to expand our information without outright telling us everything.)
I might be as coward as Wolfgang, but I'm not ashamed of it. Yes, the Deerclops from the early don't starve version was a childhood trauma for me. Somhow it eventually made me love this game even more.
Dont starve is literally one of my favorite games of all time so seeing you post a history about the whole game was very cool getting to learn more about it
I put sooo much time into the original Dont Starve on console. It was so addictive, i mastered it. But i haven't played it in years. Been thinking of returning to it recently.
I've never been so gladly baited in all my life haha I was expecting a lore video and got one, but not the way I expected xD Marvelous video and content, trully.
These videos are so well made, so well put up and so well researched, I've been watching since less than 50k subs and the work you put it deserves serious recognition
I don’t say this lightly, but this is pretty much the perfect video. I’m entranced by video essays, and you made a video about one of my favorite games OAT. The structure and sections are immaculate as well. Do I wish this video was 10 hours long? Of course. But I still love this video. Thank you.
Oh thank god. I thought that after the BTD video, and it's massive popularity, our Rook ambassador would stop making DS videos. Can't wait to watch it all!
I actually love the idea of adding vast new spaces like the ocean and caves. Minecraft faced a similar issue. When the nether was introduced, it was bland and there wasn't much to do. Over time though, we can't imagine a minecraft without the nether. It's been updated and has made the game so much more fun. I feel the same way about the caves and oceans.
Very good. I like to listen most of video essays I see, rarely looking at the screen, but editing here makes me glued to the screen because of how good it is.
This video reminds me of the multiple times where I just watched all of the Don't Starve update trailers in order, before Return of Them started adding a ton more. I actually forgot that the Maxwell's final show video was unlisted since I just always saw it on the playlist.
i really like the direction DST is going in. adding more challenges and end game content, keeping things challenging and fun, but also making an effort to be palatable to newer players. if you've tried to get friends into the game before, you already know just how tough it can be to get new players to really enjoy the game for what it is. in my opinion, that's been the enemy of DST for the longest time now. they sit at base constantly, scared of doing new things and exploring, only to then get bored and give up playing. and you can't really blame them. stuff like offering an optional "easy mode", or giving the players a scrapbook to fill up to learn things about the game, will certainly make it a lot easier for newcomers. also not to mention how the scrapbook is gonna make it so new players aren't constantly pausing the game to check the wiki.
This is the most interesting developer-player interaction ive ever heard about. Well done video! I've had don't starve but felt intimidated to play it until now!
love how you mentioned joeshmocoolstuff! he was my favourite speedrunner who really pushed the boundaries of DST, including defeating pre-nerfed toadstool solo :) wish he was still active for a cool collab or something!
Phenomenal video! I've never personally tried the game (only watched a few YT videos of people playing) but this makes me so interested in experiencing it first hand. The lore and update list is amazing to go through!
YAY I love this stuff! Also I can attest that early playtests on the internet version got you a free copy cause that's how my mom came across it and got me into it. Word of mouth. But I remember and mom won't stop telling me that the first version she played didn't have world generation. It was all one map. So you had your forest section, then off to one side was the rock section, then off to another section was the grass biome, then off in another was the berries and stuff, it was simple. My mom talked for hours about how she remembers features get added and removed as they tested things out. It was basically a game jam game.
"You can attack the player and its fair game, but you steal their stuff *sucks in through teeth*" well yeah, if I was in the wilderness trying not to starve to death and some guy just showed up and started stealing my shit, I'd be pretty goddamn pissed. Edit: I might get flack for this, but I kinda think removing Warbucks was a bit of a mistake. It feels weird that all it took to remove a whole character that was once playable was a few bad perks and some non-troversy. If Klei just edited his speech to be less ""offensive"" and gave him better quirks he could have really fit in with the ruins exploration theme Hamlet had. I know Wheeler technically took the niche Warbucks originally had, but I still think he could have worked. And if people did end up getting royally pissed at him staying past the beta, then chances are those people probably weren't fans of DS and were just offended to be offended. Also he had a gun, like an actual gun, and I'm lowkey mad that we couldn't just go full Grandpa Harley and shoot monsters with a blunderbuss.
Makes me wonder how much money they make from DST skins, especially considering it's still a paid game. Also, rest in peace TB, he was how I got into DS. I pretty much unconditionally bought every game he recommended back then.
Very proud to be a part of this 🌟

I feel the addition of the tips and in game notes are not really making the game “easier.” Since the original dont starve released, the game has only gotten more and more complex. As a new player many years ago you only had to keep track of a few things. Now there is so many complex bosses, item interactions, and threats, that it would be very difficult for any new player in dst to hope to keep track of it. I’d say the accessibility they have added in dst counteract the insane amount of complexity, balancing out the difficulty. I like to think of the relaxed mode as an alternative mode, moreso like practice for actual survival.
Most people just go to wiki anyway,so why not just add wiki to the game
@@mr.sentryanddispenser Haven’t they kind of now with the scrapbook, it just doesn’t spoil.

I joined a server in the recent months and ended up playing with a group, regularly, with some fun mods, for over 3000 days before the server got refreshed for the update and some mod fixes (since it was common for mod incompatibility messages to appear even though everything was up to date between players and server.)
Aside from that it was a really good time and we had a lot of fun.
A whole essay
some things i wanna note
-I feel like the absurdly strong nightmare creatures and top hat are amazing ideas. Having a constant fear of going insane just doesn't happen, despite that being the point of insanity. I also feel like the top hat was balanced with insanity auras and not being able to use other head gears.
-Lack of thermal stones sounds awesome
-custom endings sound frigging awesome
I can't believe the last words of this 2 hour long video really were "Was that the freeze of 87?" Simply phenomenal
I first remember knowing about Don't Starve in 2013, by a Brazilian channel named "Cê Joga?" (The channel is still alive but apparently something happened with the creator and he stopped posting years ago.)
As a Brazilian kid at the time, i didn't knew about Steam, so in order to play i found those virus sites and downloaded a Pirated Russian version of the game, it was so bad, the right part of the HUD was black and you couldn't see some of the status or days.
I was so fascinated by the game that i made a cover for the school book featuring Wilson. (I sadly don't have it anymore.)
In 2016 i downloaded Steam and bought both Don't Starve Together and Don't Starve.
I don't know, i just wanted to write my experience with Don't Starve, because it's a game that basically developed my interest for games in general, and i feel like i had to share that memory with others who probably had the same experience with Don't Starve
I've managed to watch your videos on repeat without getting bored.

My jaw dropped upon hearing Totalbiscuit's voice again, it's been so long and I grew up watching his videos. He was a shining beacon of this platform, you sir earned a like and sub!
It’s so sad to see him be gone.
Hearing TB's voice out of the blue was a heavy punch of nostalgia, thanks Orange man
I remember my first winter, i was so proud to make it, and then i think a few days later i died.
I kinda miss the mobs leaving behind their corpse when they died, to this day I'm still looking for a mod that replicates that.
As someone with 1k+ hours on DST I love relaxed mode, I get stressed easily so it allows me to have easy fun
Perfectly fine way to play the game
Honestly easy mode is perfectly fine! Most people probably hate stuff like that because it is often forced onto everyone and not a choice like in DST.
noooob
@@ליאוראסקירה-ע3פ Yeah, you're the second person to tell me to use Houndius, and I really, really should.

Ironically, their original idea of going out in a rouge-like adventure and coming back to build a town is literally just Cult Of The Lamb.

Been thinking of returning to it recently.
I've never been so gladly baited in all my life haha I was expecting a lore video and got one, but not the way I expected xD
Marvelous video and content, trully.
These videos are so well made, so well put up and so well researched, I've been watching since less than 50k subs and the work you put it deserves serious recognition
When its over 2 hours it is always good
1:50:15 I love how The Evil Monkey Baron™ has become a recurring joke in these videos
I don’t say this lightly, but this is pretty much the perfect video. I’m entranced by video essays, and you made a video about one of my favorite games OAT. The structure and sections are immaculate as well. Do I wish this video was 10 hours long? Of course. But I still love this video. Thank you.
nice story of the development. I wasn't sure if this was going to be about development, or the game's story, which is certainly a deep subject!
Oh thank god. I thought that after the BTD video, and it's massive popularity, our Rook ambassador would stop making DS videos. Can't wait to watch it all!
It's crazy to see how far this game has come. Started playing in early beta and loved every moment
Still baffles me how a game called Don’t Starve has hunger being the least of your problems.
hamlet
Amazing video! Also just to say: they added beefalo riding in solo a little while ago-- I think around when hamlet came out ^_^
That hyper realistic image of wilson at 1:02:19 now lives rent free in my mind playing everywhere at the end of time
i love how some dude died of darkness and thought it was a bug
ITS 2 HOURS LONG. Knowing this man, the wait is gonna be worth it
You always make me laugh out loud with the dumbest things. That edit of the hamlet teaser and the bloons lore video just killed my lungs.
i really like the direction DST is going in. adding more challenges and end game content, keeping things challenging and fun, but also making an effort to be palatable to newer players. if you've tried to get friends into the game before, you already know just how tough it can be to get new players to really enjoy the game for what it is. in my opinion, that's been the enemy of DST for the longest time now. they sit at base constantly, scared of doing new things and exploring, only to then get bored and give up playing. and you can't really blame them. stuff like offering an optional "easy mode", or giving the players a scrapbook to fill up to learn things about the game, will certainly make it a lot easier for newcomers. also not to mention how the scrapbook is gonna make it so new players aren't constantly pausing the game to check the wiki.
This really made me do the dst wilson thinking pose
This is the most interesting developer-player interaction ive ever heard about. Well done video! I've had don't starve but felt intimidated to play it until now!
I played Don't Starve since it launched, and man it's so awesome seeing this game go from a weird flash game concept to a full fleshed creation :D

Phenomenal video! I've never personally tried the game (only watched a few YT videos of people playing) but this makes me so interested in experiencing it first hand. The lore and update list is amazing to go through!
Fantastic video, can't believe that the game is still being updated after all these years.
Damn another banger. Can't wait to watch it later.
It's really interesting to see the devs make a 180 with their update philosophy
I can already tell this video gonna be amazing
I love these new hours long documentary/easy videos
RIGHT when I got back into Don't Starve, perfect timing
