    I feel like the Spector has more character, and the Dingwall is more neutral. I really prefer the Spector, but from a recording standpoint, the Dingwall may be easier to mix and shape in post. For me, it would depend on the situation.

    • @judowrestlerka
      @judowrestlerka 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Dingwall is a lot easier to record with but it's still not a Fender Precision Bass in the studio with sick mids, medium high bass and slightly under mid 5 Treb.
      Yeah!!!

      I do suspect the ding wall we cut through a mix without having to do a lot of work … doesn’t have a lot of subs things going on, but that’s not the most important range for a mix

      Tool is an excellent example. Adam's guitar is heavy on the mids whilst Justin's mids are scooped. Even Danny's drum & Maynard's HZs are set for minimal impedance.

  • @steffomca762

    I own a couple Spector including a Dimension and I never considered Ding a rival. Is like comparing a sumo to a Ninja imo, pickups, Ding has 3 piccups, the Spec has 2. Spector's rival is Warwic. Ding's rival is Kiesel, which also uses same 3 piccup configuration. Ding also costs about $1000 more than the Spec or Kiesel and I don't do gig bags. No Loccing Hardshell case? No sale. I outgrew gig bags in high-school 😂 that said, all the brands I mentioned here build excellent Basses, can do well with any of those 4 so really is just matter of which one fits ya style and taste and ya budget. Dude here Sounds good with both. Excellent video.

    The Spector sound (to me) overall cleaner and less "honky" with most of the pedals and amps, but the Dingwall sounds downright nasty when you hook it up to anything Darkglass, as well as with the GK.

      @ellonromanczik ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Dingwall NG2 actually sounds much better, even better than the mentioned Spector. In this comparison, the sound of Dingwall seems to me perhaps modified by reducing the bass part. Isn't that a Spector holdup? 🤔

    • @richardselby1711

      The Dingwall isn’t EQ’ed correctly or the pickups configured right for the music being played. My NG2 doesn’t sound that nasally. I’m not sure what they did here but that’s not a good representation of the Dingwall.

    Another example of what sounds better in the bedroom vs in the mix..... I prefer the Spector in this vid but I can tell from experience that that super scooped sound will get lost in the mix... Really tough call between these two. I'm listening through my hi-fi speakers and the Spector sounds massive, but in some other comparisons I prefer the Dingwall. If I EQ my P-bass to have boosted low end like the Spector (using pedal or amp EQ, obviously), objects in the room start to chime in with their own vibrations and things start falling off the shelves. If I EQ to sound more like the Dingwall, maybe with some light pedal overdrive, I feel like it's going to get muddy when I play with a couple guitarists. I'm sure there's a much larger range of tones that can be produced from these as well.
    Just comparing these two as a way to get a clean low B string (and play it up the neck so I don't have to drop tune as much), but also to give myself more versatility - as in, which sound for which song / physical setting. A living room or small bar isn't great for massive low end as noted above, but outdoors it might sound "natural" with no additional reverberations. How you EQ mids and highs is more dependent on what the guitar players are doing in the particular song.

      Went to the local bass shop and tried the 5 string Spector and Dingwall Combustion 5 and 5 string NG-3). The Spector sounds good but the ergonomics of the Dingwall were a siren song. Walked out with a Combustion mostly because I don't care for the solid color paint jobs of the NG. Combustions are beautiful in comparison, especially the no-pickguard version. I actually preferred the tone and EQ on the NG but I have gain and EQ on multiple pedals and my amp so I'll survive. Pre-amps are easily replaced, wood grain is not.

But the Dingwall has all the 'twan twan' punch and clank of new steel strings which should be easier to record and blend in a mix I guess. Anyone has experience either recording or mixing that green beauty in a heavy/death metal band context?? If so, was needed to brighten up the sound from the eq pre DI or is not a problem that should worry the player (in my case potential buyer hehe)?? I want so bad to love the new Spector basses but, for me, the Spector sound is maple body wings and EMG pickups. Getting your piece of the pie on the extended range/fanned fret market… I get diversification. I feel like, in spite of the standard scale, a Spector Euro with EMGs would impart that sonic character and probably crush in this context even though it would be a more apples to oranges comparison.

BUT - I can imagine that the Dingwall is better suited for a metal band with, e.g., double bass drum and downtuned guitars, it would cut through the (heavily low-laden) mix. So my humble opinion, the Spector is a lot nastier and holds down the low end much better and personally is my favorite. The ding wall, on a lot of the takes sounded very tinny and thin. However, the ding wall might be better for cutting through a thick metal mix.

    So, Dingwall if you want to play treble.

    Don’t care for either tbh. I’d love to hear the emg loaded dimension in the mix tho

    with no distortion, the spector sounds better with a fuller sound. With distorition I think Dingwall sounds better , more attack!

      @@Facu_Roldan Scale length has nothing to do with performance, just string tension. Lakland easily keeps up with these multi scale basses with just a 35" B.

    This is very surprising. The spector didn't sound like a spector at all. So scooped and lifeless. These pickups didn't really fit huh.
    Anyway, excellent video. That's the benchmark to a shootout!
