This famous old folksong is not a military song. In former days young man, who wanted to learn a profession had to leave their home city and have to "walk" during one year and to work in other villages and cities. The song tells about a young man, who has to leave and is homesick already. He says goodby to his girl and promises to come back ... The young man in the movie comes home from war, that is right. But the promise to come back is fullfilled.

It's also a capstan shanty, and a good one. It was the classic leaving port shanty on German merchant ships such as the magnificent Flying P barques, and is still the march past of the German Navy.

    • @Schralenberger
      @Schralenberger 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I think you mean a Focsle chanty, which was a leisure song. A capstan chanty , is a work chanty, and this has the constant flow of a leisurely Focsle chanty. Work chanty's were slow and rhythmic( and for good reason), with a definitive beat, for the 3 different types. They are divided between long and short haul chanty's, for hauling on the sail lines. And the capstan chanty, was for weighing/dropping anchor. Go you down you blood red roses , and John Kanaknaka are example of Work(hauling chantys). Blow the man down, is a focsle chanty. Here is a YT link for Randy dandy, a capstan chanty. note it's pronounced periods, for work and rest(verse, and chorus) longer chorus, faster longer work, shorter rest than a halyard chanty. Slower paced but longer work , that lends to singing longer. th-cam.com/video/_HkKN0cNUaU/w-d-xo.html

What a song means to the one who wrote it and what it means to the person who hears it need not be the same.

    • @colinmcdonald8521
      @colinmcdonald8521 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Not at all; capstan shanties often had a similar rhythm to a marching song - cf the other Shenandoah, 'The bonnie green flag, the harp without a crown,' or the classic British leaving port capstan shanty, Rio Grande, which could be used for the initial stages of weighing anchor, or, if there was no tug, for warping out - just as Muss i' denn was used aboard the Flying P barques and others. Later in the weighing process, breaking out the anchor, the other sort of shanty - the better known Shenandoah is a prime example - could be used for a concerted heave at the capstan bars.
By the way - as to 'dropping' anchor - no shanty was needed, once the anchor was over the side, just one man was needed, and he was on the windlass brake. I'll just quote one Channel and Thames Estuary pilot. 'If you tell the chief officer to drop anchor on a Greek ship, that's what he'll do - straight down and on the seabed with twenty fathoms of cable on top of it.'

One of the best movies of the past 50 years. The Director complained (to me personally, in Venice) that the German critics did not consider his movie a great achievement. Well, they are wrong. Reitz and Angelopoulos are absolutely the very best, hands down. This particular sequence is a prodigy of understatement and hypersensibility. A return like any other. Not a word is uttered. Muss ich gehen says everything. The power of ethnic ethos in every second of the footage. Impossible to watch it without tears. Fact is there are chapters I never wanted to see twice. Too much emotion. Shared with all my friends at the Valladolid Film Festival. We all hid from each other after the projection. We did not want to show that we were sobbing like children.

With everyone's permission,I would like to express my share of feelings with this song. This TV series is 'Heimat',not too old one but just from 38 yrs back and usually colourised. This portion which depicted the ww1 era is shown in black-and-white and this is just perfect.
Secondly, this part is so unique in its own way.Look here! a guy was returing home after the war is over(or he had been sent back?)and he was alive and uninjured. He walked with a happy and swift steps to reach his home but at the same time his curious and innocent eyes were looking around, looking his village -very known to him yet so unknown as he came back after such a long separation. He stopped to get himself fascinated to the mere sqabble between a pig and the kid duos, which wass a day to day happening in the rural area.He then came across some of his neighbours and finally he reached his home.Looking through the window and watching his father working in his workshop filled his heart with overwhelming joy and his colourless life so long immediately turned into a naturally colourful one, as he was home now.His father was not seemingly overwhelmed ,nor did he jumped out of his workshop leaving all his works behind but instead on his instruction the boy simply lifted a hammer and joined him. After working together for sometime,he got involved in a chat with his father,as his mom came out .He immediately rushed to her (must be told by his papa about her )and after being welcome by mom he felt his urge to pee and went away. Then his parents looked at each other and smiled- a smile of relief.
I don't know if it would be more appropriate to show his parents rush out to welcome their son and start celebrating his homecoming, but to me this subtle and reserved expression has carried a lot of emotions, enouhgh to moisten my eyes. His papa is the most happy person (another being his mama)seeing his son back alive but what he did out of his happiness? He immediately took his son in as his helper as he used to do so far and the papa-son duo got themselves involved in their daily works as they used to do before the son was sent to war.The war could not interfere with their normal chore of day to day living as if they started from that very point where they left their work perhaps 2-3 years ago and as if nothing happened in between.
He naturally felt urge as he had to walk a long way and perhaps drank quite a lot of water as he was thirsty. The parents then smile at each other, silently talking to one another "Look, our son is back,he is alive. Now he is again the part of our family, our lives are normal again. We can smile again".

Even though I don't understand German, the song is very moving none-the-less. Someone has provided a rough but seemingly accurate translation of the song. It is a song about going off to war, remaining faithful on the front line, and returning to get married.

    • @Samcaracha
      @Samcaracha 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

+Steven Torrey Well I'd say roughly someting like this:
Would I need, would I need to go out of town,
and you my darling would have to stay here.
When I'll be coming home, coming home,
I'll return to you my darling.
While I cannot be with you
I still have my joy in you.
When I'll be coming home, coming home,
I'll return to you my darling.
Why d'you cry, do you cry my darling for me having to leave.
As if our love ends here.
Even though there's plenty of girls out there, plenty of girls,
      I'll be faithful.
Do you think as soons as I see another one
that our love will immediately end?
Even though there's plenty of girls out there, plenty of girls,
      I'll be faithful.
Over the year (after the year) when the wine harvest is brought in
I will join again with you.
And if I am, if I am
still your darling then our wedding shall be.
Over the year (after the year) when my time is done
I belong to you and me.
And if I am, if I am
still your darling then our wedding shall be.
Over the year (after the year) when my time is done
I belong to you and me.

The video is not perfect for the original meanig of this song. This is not really a song about going off to war. The point was added over the years. This song has its roots in a region that was very agriculturally based and very poor in the past. They had not enough food and they needed the money so the young men had to go away to earn money between the harvest seasons.

I don't understand the ending to this lovely video. What is that young man doing there? Is he showing the village elders what he learned on his year-long walk-about?

Is this clip from a movie or is it just an exceptionally well thought out and presented music video? I really like this. Thanks for posting.

I believe this clip is from the film series "Heimat" which tells the decades- long history of a German family from the mid 19th Century to around 2000. The series which tells the story in the context of social and political events is considered a masterpiece by critics as well as ordinary viewers. The series was shown on PBS.

@@johnmay3655 Thank you kindly, John. I am learning German now and am just coming up on conversational. Not quite there but getting close. I'm using music and movies to help smooth out the process. This looks interesting and I will definitely check it out. Vielen dank.

@@Rikki0 Bitteschon. The musical soundtrack on the clip does not match the actual soundtrack of the movie series "Heimat". There is a treasury of German classic choral music and songs that is an inspiration for German language students. To name a few, Schiller's "Ode to Joy", "Mein Vater war ein Wandersmann", "Lili Marleen", etc.

@@johnmay3655 Right John. Lili Marleen is one of the reasons I have always wanted to learn German. My Dad was a BTG in B-17s and like many GI's from WWII he loved that song. He used to sing it around the house in German though he didn't actually speak it. I eventually discovered Rosetta Stone and away I went. Santiano is also great for helping German students, along with Heino and Unheilg. Their diction is clear and understandable without being drowned out by the music. Nene (Gabrielle Kerner) is also great just because she's so darned good looking. :)

@@Rikki0 That's an interesting story about your dad's B-17 crew service. I'm an aviation history buff and have attended numerous air shows featuring "heritage flights" with WW2 vintage aircraft. I climbed aboard a B-17 on display at an airshow and made my way through the fuselage from the cockpit to the aft part of the craft. It was very cramped to say the least. The crews must have been contortionists to navigate through the fuselage while in flight. The song "Lili Marleen has been translated to many languages and is probably loved by many veterans of different nations.

The clip is from the first season of the epic series
"Heimat" by Edgar Reitz - see linK below: www.imdb.com/title/tt0087400/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1
A chronic of the small village of "Schabbach" in
Rhineland-Palatine. A portrait of it's residents and their struggle with world
events from 1919 to 1982, influencing their lives (war, economic crisis, political
      changes, technological developments). Fictional
but touching authentic liKe a documentary. The actors are almost all non-professionals
from the region speaKing solely the loKal dialect. So also german watchers from
other regions have to depend on subtitles (similar to "The Wire").
Unfortuneately there are only few memorable all-time-classic
German TV-Series but in my opinion "Heimat" is one of the Top 5 (Others
are "Tadellöser & Wolff" or "Berlin Alexanderplatz").

the scene with the blacksmith is unrealistic, as it would have been incomprehensible for a young especially, to assist with pounding the metal whilst rugged up like that. similarly unrealistic is for a fellow to piss anywhere with having awareness that mother or grandmother, other female relatives are watching. in those days a dude would have had to be completely drunk to be forgiven for such an indecent act, and the poorer the farming community, the stricter on moral code of conduct. HERE The dude is portrayed like a modern punk, he even walks like a punk, fast slinky or jerky movements that belong in a nightclub or mental asylum but not on the farm Boy turned soldier. scrap this film reel and try again.
