    Shelley Long's acting here is incredible. The expression with her eyes and eyebrows, the amount her mouth is open, and how it all changes slightly throughout the story. She works at this level in every single episode with her expressions when she's not talking. Total master class.

    What makes Sam's apparent sincerity so great is that we, as the audience, are fooled by it just as much as Diane is.

      Like Kirstie, but NO ONE compared to the comic genius of Long (Diane). It used to make me nuts when people said she was AS good or better. I thought are you f'ing kidding me???

    • @issakelly8071
      @issakelly8071 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@missygoldstein12 Alley, In My Opinion, is just as good as Shelley Long. They both have Emmys to prove it. I think Kirstie had the greater challenge of making a role funny that the writers kinda botched and never nailed down. That doesn't take away what Shelley brought to her role. NO ONE could've played Diane better. That was HER role.

      There’s also a scene in a later season where Diane writes Sam quite a letter. It’s not quite 18 pages (front and back) but it made me wonder if that was in the back of their (the writers) minds.

    I feel like the writers of the show probably got rejected by a woman, went home and thought of the perfect comeback while they were in the shower, and that what this scene is. A man with a bruised ego's fantasy of getting back at the woman that was too smart for them. Lol

      If I were to watch this scene without having seen the show, I would totally agree, but I personally feel secure in assuming that this wasn’t the case, because I think a lot of love was put into writing Diane’s character in season one. She and Sam were always at arms with each other, and they each had their strengths/weaknesses, but it always felt like they were on equal footing. In later seasons Diane would go sort of off the rocker, character wise, but early on the writers wanted her to be a genuine, intelligent, and likeable woman

      You better watch the show or at least this episode cause you are way off base. The point wasn’t to demonstrate a scenario of getting back at any intelligent woman it was one of many bouts between Sam and Diane. Diane is the one who started the confrontation to begin with due to Sam relying on simple pick up lines and good looks. So Sam went ahead and demonstrated at the end that wasn’t the case. If anything this should humble any intelligent girl out there cause there are guys who can pull this off like Sam instead of arrogantly thinking they are immune to all charms.

    I loved this show, still do. But the writers did seem to have a problem with women. They were all annoying and hard to respect. Diane and Rebecca were never made to appear right. The guys found them to be insufferable but you could always understand why and not so with the women. So much arm candy in the minor female characters, not with the male ones. Even Carla was a caricature and nasty. Doesn't diminish my enjoyment of the series, but it is what it is.

    • @wjkathman
      @wjkathman 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Let's look at the way the show depicted its male characters. Sam was a recovering alcoholic and inveterate skirt-chaser with a mammoth Peter Pan syndrome. Coach and Woody were both basically morons, loveable morons, but morons nonetheless. Norm was a fat slacker content to do nothing with his life. Cliff was an incel weirdo with it a know-it-all complex. Frazier was a smug yuppie who himself seemed to have some alcoholic tendencies. All extremely flawed characters.
      Why shouldn't the female characters likewise be imperfect?
