    These people have the absolute best tutorials in caring for and operating Rancilio Silivia machines. Thank you so much! A tip for others that I like for rinsing (after descaling) is using a TDS meter. ZeroWater pitchers come with one and their 5 stage filters filter to 0 PPM. They fairly cheap and easy to find as well. Keep up the phenomenal work! 😀

    I could be mistaken, but Dezcal recommends 1 oz. Dezcal per 32 oz. water. The tank on the Silvia holds about 64 oz. when not quite full, so it seems to me that even 3/4 full, more Dezcal is needed.

    I noticed that lactic acid seems to be a lot softer on the brass boiler. A lot less blue stuff comes out while descaling. With citric acid the water would always be super blue, indicating that it was dissolving the brass.

  • @franklincoralsnow
    @franklincoralsnow 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Gail, you do great videos but the taste test you do on the citric acid contained in Dezcal is not just citric acid. Look at the ingredients, there is sulfuric acid in Dezcal.

    • @richardday5125
      @richardday5125 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes ma'am I can. I am new-ish to owning an espresso machine, so in my ignorance I though back flushing was descaling. We use Cafiza regularly to back flush the machine, however, we noticed that the pour was getting slower and slower over time until eventually nothing came out. We slowly and gently back flushed the machine, 2 second pours, until we would get water to disperse in to the drip tray and eventually pour from the basket.
      In doing research I found that back flushing and descaling are not the same thing. We tried to use the 50/50
      white distilled vinegar water solution doing a 10 second pour and letting the machine sit for 20 minutes at a time for over 4 hours. Then flushing 3 containers of fresh distilled water through until the vinegar sent was no longer present. This seemed to help it pour much better. So we tried to pour a shot. We got a double shot
      to pour, although it took a very long time, roughly 3 - 10 second pours. This is almost triple the time that it would normally take.
      The screen under the basket was removed and checked for clogs, there were none.
      We primed the machine through the steam wand to make sure there was not an air bubble.
      Lastly we used a descaling solution that was 2.4fl oz, and required the same amount of water dilution. I
      do not remember the name, sorry. It was one they sell at Bed Bath and Beyond. This had little further results.
      Thank you for your response and any advice would be greatly appreciated, we need our coffee!

    • @Susazeu
      @Susazeu 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Arnold Vroomans I'd have to disagree to that. Vinegar works well when citric acid isn't available, and my Krups 5240 is a test to that, working beautifully after 5 years. I prefer citric acid (much easier to clean up), but in need use 1 cup of white vinegar in 3 cups of water. Better than nothing.

I dont understand so I'm going to follow what the internet said & put 50 ml in 500 Ml of hot water, add it to my take which already had water. should I add more dezcale that 50 ml? I don't know. Help! My Silvia machine has white milky water coming out with residue in the bottom of the cup. Like someone ground up some chalk in the water tank but the water going in is clear. We got this as a present from my father in law. We have used it for 3 years with no issues but all of a sudden it started having a funky taste. I ran about 3 tanks of water and still won’t clear. When running fresh water through to rinse out all the citric acid do you need to leave the machine off for 20 minutes or so like you do with the dezcal solution or can you just run it continually?

    • @treasuretron
      @treasuretron 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm wondering the same thing! My guess is no, the letting it sit is just for the citric acid to do its work and then flushing water through is to get the citric acid out...

    Folks, in the last five videos, you have basically conveyed three different recommendations for how often we should descale our machines. In the "Ask Andrew" video, he's saying that we shouldn't descale at all as long as we're using filtered water. Then, in the "Breville Oracle Care" video a couple of days ago, Gail says that once every 6 months should be fine if we're using the included filter. Now, she's saying 3 months for filtered water. So, what's the final word? Do you guys sell water hardness test strips so we can adjust for our specific cases?

    • @SeattleCoffeeGear
      @SeattleCoffeeGear  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      ascosta In the Ask Andrew From Rocket video, we were speaking specifically about Rocket Espresso Machines. Descaling is a somewhat controversial subject, so following the each brands recommendation is best. What machine do you own? We do not sell water hardness test strips, but they can easily be found online/ Hope that clears up any confusion :)

    • @ascosta
      @ascosta 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Seattle Coffee Gear, I have a Rancilio Silvia and I descale it every 6 months or so. Last time, the water coming out during the process was virtually clear, so I assume there wasn't much build-up to remove. I always use filtered water. What about plumbed-in machines? I assume they usually get descaled very infrequently (multiple years?) because you need to take them apart, right? Sure, they normally have filers installed in their water inlet but, again, that's the same as using filtered water in tank machines. Also, I think Andrew mentioned that descaling actually damages the metals inside the machine. I can't see how his comments could be only applicable to Rocket machines... what's special about them?

    • @LanTheWarder
      @LanTheWarder 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The reason for the different recommendations are due to different circumstances. You have to make an educated guess based on factors such as 1) the type of machine you use, 2) the hardness of your water and 3) how often you use your machine.
      For example where I live now, Stockholm Sweden, there is quite soft water and I don't use my machine more than twice a day I so I could get away with not doing it for a year. However, when I was in Switzerland, the water was so hard you could actually see white residues of minerals in the water. It was so bad it clogged up my Mokka pot after two weeks!
      Basically follow your brands recommendation and make adjustments according to water hardness in your region and how often you use your machine.
