Are you using high mileage oil on your sequoia?

So oil doesnt gush out on you, dont take the cap off the engine first. Do that after you take the plug off.

Get yourself an oil filter strap wrench and don’t tighten it as hard as you can. At most tighten it as hard as you can with three fingers
