I did something that works the same on my 06 but yours looks very professional and 110% better than mine. I used a small diameter 8" piece of stainless steel wire that has a washer on the end of it. So now it has a tail lol. I grab the tail and pull slightly to the left and it opens right up. When I have the time I think I'll try your upgrade. Great video thanks a lot!
Nice mod. I also got rid of the inner and outer dust boots. I added 4 peices of of gorilla tape around the outer latch to keep out the majority of dust from dirt and gravel roads. I also rebuilt the latch mechanism as the inner rubberized coating was comming off binding the latch. This binding was so bad it bent the metal upgrade handle I had installed! During this process I replaced the latch pins with bolts. This allows a failsafe now of using a wrench when the cable doesn't work. Usually a sign to lube it up a bit. Finally I also replaced the cable and Noe it ends with a ball grip. No more latch. Works great. But this solution is nice too. Also recommend having the second opener inside the door.
Thanks for sharing. I won’t be buying another latch handle ever again. Made mine out of a scrap piece of aluminum… covered it with a tight fitting vacuum cap. Didn’t bother with the cable on the inside as I didn’t need it. Again, thanks!

Seems like this style of latch hack came out in the last few years ago. Quite a few years ago when I went through my first handle problems this wasn't out the . I have replaced the handle with the OE Toyota handle and done the lead sinker truck to take up slack on the cable. It slipped off and I am back in there tonight and watched videos to make sure I found the process to take the back off again since I haven't been in there in 4-5 years maybe. Could use a new cable but just put the lead sinker back and taped it back so it can't slip out of place again. We're good to go but if something fails again I'll probably do this style repair. Oh taped the rear window motor and gave it the fix again while in there .

I’d your plastic cover piece is missing you can use a piece of bent metal like in my other video and open it. Or I’ve heard you can take the license plate off and make a hole but I think that’s kind of ghetto. The only other option is to crawl inside and remove the cover. It’s a bit tricky but doable. I had to do that on my first go around. Hope this helps! Make sure and subscribe to our channel for more helpful sequoia ideas :) cheers
Remove the rear window weather strip, slide a sturdy ruler in to pop out the cable, pull cable to open.
@@wasatchmotoco I've replaced my latch numerous times and I finally reinforced a bent bracket with a welded reinforcement. My new problem is the actuator has failed with the liftgate locked closed. I've pulled the paneling and pulling on the actuator cable does nothing. If I understand your previous comment correctly, were you able to get into the liftgate and pull the plastic housing around the actuator from inside the door? If I can get the door open I can swap the actuator easily enough, I just can't figure out how to get it open from inside the truck. I'm also in SLC, UT, I will keep an eye out for your Sequoia around the valley. Thanks!
@@morgangriffith6226 sorry to hear about your tailgate. That’s a tough one. I removed the plastic after it was open but I’m sure one could pop it off with it closed with a certain tool..
boss the link is missing to purchase the latch?
Can you do it without adding the lever inside below the window? You make it look easy.
Is there a link. I saw it one time and then cant find again
hi gang... trying to order your latch... however I don't see the link that is supposed to be above. was it removed or am I mentally challenged?
Where's the link to the custom bypass latch??
Great video awesome idea thanks for sharing I owe you a beer 🍺
What the name of this part you used and where I order it
Best shirt!!! Did you get stuck?
No I’m just a big fan :)
Maybe I missed this part but PLEASE tell me what you used for the actual “new handle” ???
There isn’t a new handle, the tab that he installs replaces the way you would normally open the hatch.
I am Interested in getting this latch. Can you send me a link?
I just purchased this, can’t wait to install it! Also I like the idea of running the cable back through into the cab, I may look into doing that myself. Thanks for the idea!
