  • Neutrophils are most common white blood cell in the body.
They are responsible on immune reactions, fight infections and heal injuries.
Neutrophils play an essential role in immune defenses because they ingest, kill, and digest invading microorganisms, including fungi and bacteria. Failure to carry out this role leads to immunodeficiency, which is mainly characterized by the presence of recurrent infections.
An absolute neutrophil count is important to identify if boy has enough neutrophils in the body.
The normal range of neutrophils in a healthy adult is between 2,500 and 7,000 neutrophils per microliter of blood.
Once their count is below 1 x 10/L recurrent infections start. As compensation, the monocyte count may increase.
In neutropenia, frequent and recurrent infections occurs include:
Skin infections, Gingivitis, Deep abscesses, Peritonitis, Osteomyelitis, Lung abscesses, Pneumatoceles, Sinus and lung infections, e.g., pneumonia, Otitis media, Meningitis, Septicemia, Arthritis, Bacteremia, Fever, Coarse facial features, Mucocutaneous candidiasis, Cough, Malaise, Intestinal malabsorption, Bronchiectasis, Recurrent tonsillitis, Extensive cutaneous bacterial (Staphylococcal) infections, Sore throat, Purulent conjunctivitis, Poor wound healing.
Also possible Infections caused by rare bacteria and fungi.
Opportunistic infections, Frequent use of antibiotics and antifungals.
    Causes:
Almost any infection can cause neutropenia. The condition is also seen with folate, vitamin B12, and copper deficiency.
Low level of Neutrophils can also be caused by:
Antibiotics and other medications like: Cephalosporin, Sulfonamides, Hydralazine, Penicillins, Quinidine, Aminopyrine and heavy metals.
Chronic Infections (hepatitis, tuberculosis, sepsis, Lyme disease).
Chemotherapy. Bone marrow disorder (leukemia, Hodgkin lymphoma).
Autoimmune disease (Crohn’s disease, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis).
    Diagnositics:
The immunological investigation of a patient with neutropenia includes the assessment of immunoglobulins, complement system, and phagocytes.
    Other investigations of immunodeficiency disorders:

Please remember! Anorexia Nervosa causes pansitopenia and this causes low neutrophil level! Please don't ignore malnutrition!

@@guesswhosbackg6616 No. This is not explain everything. Anorexia Nervosa is not a choice! It is a metabolic and genomic based mental brain illness. I challenge with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder for 11 years. But this returned to post traumatic anorexia nervosa (Severe and enduring) for 7 years. Multiple organ failure, bone marrow failure (pansitopenia), cardiac arrest, cancer, cushing,.... Don't ignore child abuse and rape.

Only neutrophils are changed isolated? ? Cough maybe because of bronchitis. It depends how long cough and symptoms lasts. Check for bronchitis first.

Just saw today that mine is just below at 1.9. Many medications, past antibiotics. Currently waiting to get my gallbladder out. Definitely think I have a malabsorption issue. Curious to see if my dr will even give it a second thought. I'm also very achey and feel tired and unwell.
