    I weighed my 1 ton parts when doing my swap. I have an overhead crane with a digital scale. These weights are fully dressed axles including brakes, gears, shafts, tie rods, and oil:
    LR front axle: 320
    LR rear axle: 250
    Dana 60 front: 512 (kingpin axle)
    Dana 70S rear: 428
    We're essentially adding 370 lbs of unsprung weight to the Disco when doing a one ton swap (before suspension changes and wheels/tires). My stock Disco 2 wheels/tires weigh 63 lbs each.

      @@RumblestripDotNet no they didn't. The axles can carry more, but it doesn't change the chassis, nor does it change the weight it's registered at and the DOT don't care that you put bigger axles under it. Over weight is overweight. Furthermore, there's a lot more to a gvwr than strictly the axles. Putting super duty axles under something doesn't make it a super duty.

    My '91 K5 with an FWC camper and LS swap drivetrain scaled out at 6,500 pounds loaded for a week in the backcountry. It's now gained a few pounds with a big block 5-speed swap, but I need to scale it again to see where it sits. The big thing I found is with the camper I got more space to safely put stuff and I typically overpack for a trip. So it's not always the truck itself but the crap you bring with you. Passengers, gear, tools, food, water, other drinks, and fuel add up quickly.

    How do i achive this? I didn't install unnecessary offroad stuff, a stock hilux with 235/85r16 is extremely capable, i never had a problem getting to any place i want to. I actually never reached the limits of the truck when traveling because i turned around and searched for alternatives, there is absolutely no benefit in tackling a hard track and risking damage thousands of miles from home in a remote Tajik mountain range where every week or so a farmer shows up.

    Part of the problem is people are trying to make their rigs as capable as possible off-road and treating it like a push-your-limits weekend romper while trying to be an overlander at the same time and it ends up being bad for both. Overlanding isn't about pushing your vehicle on the hardest trails. Skip one ton axles, 37s, and lots of extra steel. 33s and a front locker are plenty capable for most trails. Don't skimp on the front bumper but don't go crazy, add the minimum underbody protection on the vital parts, and keep your gear to the essentials. Limit your comfort items. Gas mileage is important for an overlander as its about going long distance. 37s and one ton axles add a lot of weight and rolling resistance and will kill your gas mileage and on road performance which unfortunately a lot of miles are on road as well, and then you need to carry more fuel which adds more weight to make up for that lower gas mileage.

    • @johnterpack3940
      @johnterpack3940 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I disagree about the one-tons. Even a slightly taller tire is going to put more stress on the axles. Add deeper gears to compensate for the tires and you compound the problem. Regardless how diligent you are about weight you're going to add to it significantly. So you'll have a heavy vehicle operating in rough terrain. The added weight of the one-tons is a small price to pay for the durability they bring.
      Generally, I do agree about tire size. But there are a lot of variables. 33s might be adequate for a compact SUV but not necessarily for a full-size 4-door pickup. If the trails in your area are heavily rutted you will probably want taller tires. We get lots of flooding here. So I plan to add taller tires for those times when the streets are underwater.

    • @schmojo33
      @schmojo33 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This conversation is about generalities, any sane person will understand there are variables and you need to adapt or dare I say step outside the norm for your own situation and intentions. Obviously a 4door full size truck way want to consider 35s or 37s but thats not necessarily a good choice for an overlander in the first place unless you are towing or hauling a camper on the bed and then one ton axles may not be a bad choice. You just are always going to add a quite a bit of weight, thats a given. The vast bulk of overlanders in the U.S. are driving a relatively modern Tacoma, 4Runner, Jeep Wrangler, 2nd gen Xterra, etc and it would be retarded to throw one ton axles on those vehicles just to run 33s. In that very common situation, one may not even need to regear at all just to go up an inch or two in tire size. On these vehicles, you can keep them relatively stock, and only need to add maybe a couple skid plates, 33s, lockers, air compressor, a better bumper, shovel, basic camping gear and still stay under GVM and they are all set for most trails that most people are going to be on when they want to go overlanding. A winch is very much optional. The point is to pick the trails that are offroad and take you out the furthest while being the easiest for your vehicle. People are commonly confusing 4wheeling with overlanding.

    Now the trick is how to keep all this capability and functionality but drop 300-400lbs out of it. More durability, more performance, etc. That MDF cargo system is ripe for the picking, replacing with a light aluminum setup. Dual batts and all the associated heavy wiring and hardware can be replaced with modern lithium solar generators. The steel roof rack is also weight where you don't want it.

    Only 1300#s less than my 2010 3500hd 4x4 reg cab silverado with a cab height enclosed steel service box loaded ready to camp. Rad build but I think I'd rather just get an aluminum cab height service box and be done. Actually thinking about adding some speed holes between compartments in my box to drop some weight. Won't be as cool but atleast I have the factory gvwr ratings and towing.
    Might have to do a side by side after I get lift and tires and see how bad that thing dusts me of pavement, I only live an hour or so south. I've already tried to slide the thing off a trail and tested the winch properly. Lost a few grams in paint....

  • @chir0pter
    @chir0pter 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Not too surprised. I think the 1-tons were justified, but aluminum should be used in every other mod except rocker sliders and front bumper. And even then it would be heavy, but not as heavy as it's going to be- which will be closer to 8000 lbs than 7000 when it's all loaded up...hope you have some engine mods planned!

    I'd feel much safer in this rig, than say a 6500 lbs Tacoma overlander on stock axles. Technically over GVWR, but the extra weight capacity of the tires / axles, much stronger control arms, extra braking capacity is also significantly higher than factory. The only stock weight bearing component is the chassis itself, but LRs are known to have beefy frames. The military Jeep J8 with a Dana 60 has over double the payload of a stock wrangler; frames are often not the limit in payload / GVW.

    The thing that always puts it in perspective for me is when people talk about fuel.
    Standard Disco has a 20 gallon tank (IIRC) and they get roughly 500 miles on a tank.
    When people talk about having 1000 miles of range that means they've got at least 40 gallons of fuel aboard.
    Now think about driving around with a full 40 gallon drum into the back of your Disco!
    It's SO easy to start fitting extra fuel and water tanks and not think about the weight of those liquids.
    Then there's the hardware that goes into an overland vehicle.
    You can empty all the drawers and cubbies out and you'll find, maybe, a couple of hundred pounds of stuff and you'll feel okay about it.
    Thing is, a single sheet of 1/2 plywood weighs 40lbs.
    How much plywood goes into the average overland truck? 2 sheets? 3? 4?
    I've got a fairly modest drawer set-up in the back of my disco but it took the best part of 3 sheets of 1/2 ply to build it, and there's 10 gallons of water stored, and a 120A battery.
    That's ~120lbs of drawers, 120lbs of water and 80lbs of battery before I even LOOK at the 200lbs of camping junk that sits in there as well.

    3 tons isnt bad really given that most of it will be un-sprung weight, plus its all down low. There are plenty of overland rigs out there that are around the 4 ton plus mark with lots of kit strapped on. The disco is a pretty slick and clean build in terms of accessories, its just got some tanked axles and tires.

    • @WorkshoptoWilderness
      @WorkshoptoWilderness 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@greggoett I guess its never technically going to be an overland vehicle by "overlanders" standards. Heavy, huge tires and one ton axles are not the mods that someone considering overland travel would think of when building a truck. I guess the reality is that this is more of an adventure rig with camping capabilities that will stay in the USA most likely. So based on that its parts and such will be supported. I think its a slick build and not over complicated but us humans like to label and categorise things so they fit in somewhere and calling it an overland vehicle will make it subject to criticism based on the gurus that came before us who set the stage. Anyway its a great build of masterclass fabrication!

    • @greggoett
      @greggoett 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      So it's NOT going to drive the highways? Be a rig trailered to the trail? My concern was for the highway speed characteristics. Driving thru Montana.. trying to do near the 80 mph speed limit on I-90.. the twist and turns on mountain passes.. the road under repair heavy and fast suspension movement.

    • @DirtLifestyle

    • @greggoett
      @greggoett 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DirtLifestyle 1 ton axles run down the road with massive amounts of weight unsprung. It can get into a tail wagging the dog situation. Lets say the front axle and tires are 1000 lbs. Hit a pot hole doing 75 mph. That energy being transferred into the rig.. what's going to handle it better 2000 lbs of front end on chassis in your rig.. or 4000 lbs of a actual 1 ton truck? Again.. you just want to be cautious of tail wagging the dog type situation. At a 5 mph crawl over rocks.. no big deal.. at 75 mph.. bigger deal. E=M*V^2. Velocity is squared.. so as speed increases.. increases the energy goes way up.. fast

    I was a little shocked when I weighed my ‘80 chevy truck after doing a bunch of work. With a mild built 5.3 swap 33” tires on 15” wheels and 1/2t axles and auto trans it weighed 5300lbs. Upgraded to 3/4t springs axles and manual transmission, added winch, 35’s on 17”s, a topper, subs and it’s weighing 6100. Still need sliders and my goal was 6k said and done 😅 has me wanting a 6.0 because I occasionally pull a car trailer. It’s a little too easy to get a rig too fat 😆
