Dave could have done this fix in his sleep,I'm no Tech or Luthier, but I could have diagnosed and righted this guitar myself. How you ask! Because I watch and learn from Dave's videos.
Nice job on the LP, Dave. Not a big fan of over-wrap on guitars that are not designed and built for it. Immediately upon seeing the very minimal break angle across the saddles my suspicion was that here was the primary problem. That, plus the LP badly needing a setup! The neck was also a first consideration but that turned out to be not the case. Well done brother, one of the more beautiful LPs I've seen recently.
I heard Joe Bonamassa has just released a signature overwrap. It can be installed on any Burst Les Paul, and has the initials JB underneath the stop tail... It's only $850 shipped... lol
hi Davey, when using your long straight edge, it looked like it was resting on the bridge pickup? or the mounting block for the pickup? could have perhaps screwed the measuring of the relief. Just noticed this, but only halfway through watching...
overwrap gives the strings a softer buttery feel, makes it easier, softer to play. BUT, you can get the same results by adjusting the tail up, no need to over wrap, just don't over do it, you will get buzz
Am I the only one thinking that move #1 should have been to loosen the strings and to lower the stop bar straight away with the old strings and the old setup in place, and then tuning back to pitch to properly test if the high stop bar with over wrap with high stop bar was really the problem with all other things equal? I guess we'll never know now. Of course the whole point of over wrapping is the put the stopbar right down.
You can see right away there's not enough room to drop the stop bar to make much of a difference. There are slight variances in neck angle from one LP to another. Some are too flat (like this one) to get good tone and sustain with an overwrap.
I wish you worked for Gibson setting up their guitars. I might actually buy another! Last 5 Gibson's I bought needed TLC and when you spend more than $25 on an instrument, it should be set-up before it leaves the factory (in my opinion). Helps sell more guits. nice video very informative. Thanks
What I would have done is check the neck relief first, followed by String Action and with the fret rocker. Before I missed with truss road. Just to eliminate all of those first. With old strings on before I restring it with new ones first.
I picked up a factory second ESP LTD 401 it had the same issue with the same high frets at the same portion of the neck and they recognized the issue in their QC and sold it with a half off discount, and the fact that the final QC checks at ESP on their budget line appears to be better than at Gibson for a two thousand dollar Les Paul speaks to all the issues everyone cites when they describe how all Gibson models have shaky QC now.
Hi Dave, here Oli from Germany. Thx for your videos, learned a lot over the years👍 Maybe you can play the guitars at the end through a tube amp as reference to get an impression of the sound of all that interesting guitars you‘re working on...Would appreciate it. Greetings from Germany Oliver
I don't mean to injure you their but my les Paul is an over wrap from its start in 72. Always stayed a over wrap the Gibson rep and the epiphone rep said that's the correct way over wrap even on the 335.makes string bends smoother and keeps the frets from being damaged on bends . string thru the tailpiece was for simple installing.

Speaking of numbers, it would be nice when you use the feeler gauge-just like you did a dozen times checking relief-if you could state the gauge you’re using. “That’s right about where I like it” needs a bit clarifying. Thank you!
Gibson Custom Shop? That thing new would cost around 6K Canadian new. Great looking guitar right there, and as Dave said now she works right. Good work once again. I'm in Cuba right now with the wife and kids on vacation, so cheers to everyone from hot and sunny Cuba.
Hey Dave, when you're checking neck re!ief, are looking for the gauge to have room between the string and fret or to touch both or only one or what? Confused...
Nothing at all wrong with an over wrap - if you do it right. And this one was not done right. That said, lots of folks argue about the virtues of each approach. Matters not if done right!
Just what Rob said. I have two Les Pauls and on both I had to adjust the stop bar up a just bit to not have the strings hit the bridge as they cross over. Some folks will say that not dive bombing the stop bar to the body kills some sustain, but I’ve not had that issue with either of mine. As a Fender player you don’t get to experience the joy of separate bridge and stop bar. Just the fun of adjusting the trem block and springs.
mr7wi Some just do it cause it makes it easier to bend. When you bend you increase the tension in the whole string, or rather that is what should happen. If the strings catch on nut or the crap-o-matic, the string between nut and bridge takes all the tension and it's harder to bend. If the angle behind the bridge is steeper, the resting point of the string is very "defined". There isn't a lot of tension shifting before and after the bridge. With a lower angle it's easier to move the tension. If there is almost no angle, you get buzzing cause the resting pointing isn't "defined" at all. A few degrees are enough and you're happy. If that redistribution of tension isn't working on the other end, the strings get stuck at the badly cut nut. That's why there are tuning issues. Do a bend and at the release the pulled string can't go back through the nutslot to relax. When you're tuning you also get those plinking noises. That tells you to work on the nutslots.
Dave, I just got my Fret Barber from Stew Mac. I have little sharp pieces of metal EVERYWHERE! Can you please come over my house with some strong magnets and shop vac? Thank you.
Dave! Hi, I have a quick truss rod question- on my Martin hd28 (from 2015) I loosen the strings a bit when I put back in the case. Is this a good practice? Will it help prevent a future neck reset, or do I risk messing up the neck somehow because of the truss rod tension?? Thanks man!
Dave's World of Fun Stuff- okay running into my closet to tune it up, so I don't ef up my 2,800 dollar guitar that I would never be able to replace! Thank you Dave!

I don't understand why people mess with guitars. I have a 120th anniversary LP. I don't do anything with it other than change strings, clean it, clean and beeswax the fretboard and a little graphite on the nut at every string change. And it's fine. Leave it alone. Everyone has to try and create a Frankenstein guitar.
ii watch al your videos and I wish that I knew someone a tenth as good anddiligent as you when working on someone's guitar. Id mail my 3 to you just for a set up on all of them
Bongo Nutty it’s supposed to reduce the angle that the strings hit the bridge from the stop tail in order to decrease tension on the strings which should make it easier to play
The only time I’d do it is if the string angle off the bridge is so sharp that the strings wind up touching the back edge of the bridge. The Schaller “harmonica” bridge on the 70s SGs were notorious for that.
The only reason they ever overwraped was when they had no bridge. Tailpiece was bridge. As far as tension, jeez I get tired of saying this, tension = pitch! If your strings have less tension your out of tune, period. To lessen tension you have to shorten scale length. Just think about it. Same when you bend the note. If by overwrapping the string slides thru the bridge, just what you need on a LP. Another place for the string to bind, but if it does slide then it may feel a tiny, tiny bit easier to start the bend but then you have to bend the string further to hit the note, again tension = pitch! It may sound different cause you have less pressure on the bridge. Everybody try's to get maximum transfer from string to body so why lessen the pressure and risk losing that good transfer. The whole top wrap thing makes no sense. And I would loosen the truss rod completley off, let it sit for a day and start over on tightening it. That's waaaaay tight.
I think your just trying to get it too straight when its up to tension, should be some releif. probably more than some people think. if you want it to play nice.
Once you get one set up to your liking, there isn’t a better electric guitar than a Les Paul. The only other guitar that even comes close is a Telecaster.
My Standard and Special are just fine. Never had problems with either. The standard is 21 years old and the special is 19 years old. Both have been played heavily over the years.
Nice guitar, nice work! Are you out of toilet paper? You came back from your "stinkin" session wearing a different tee shirt. You know...just sayin'...we've all done it. Cheers, brother!
Had the same problem with my Firebird. One of my son's friends thought he was doing me a favour by setting that guitar up. Once I restrung the guitar the proper way it was back to sounding good.
All that is necessary is to drop the bridge down (if that is still an option), to have bit of an angle and it plays right while having the benefits of the top wrap. Maybe Dave tried, but the bridge was already pretty low.

Dave. Could you loosen the truss rod nut and gently put pressure on the necking by hand to get it to back bow? Then it can be tightened not so tight.
That's precisely what he did at 12:22 in the vid.
What causes the truss rod to max out? Is it faulty installation or fighting against a neck that's too bowed?
I heard Joe Bonamassa has just released a signature overwrap. It can be installed on any Burst Les Paul, and has the initials JB underneath the stop tail... It's only $850 shipped... lol

More like 6k Canadian for a Custom Shop, but in the end she seems to work ok.
For 6k I would buy a Custom build from Freddys Frets and have some change leftover.Check his YT page, great series on building LP's.
$2000 dollar Les Paul? Are you buying a used one? Have you ever shopped for a Gibson? Or do you just repeat everything you read on the internet?

What's the rationale behind the overwrap thing?
Bongo Nutty it’s supposed to reduce the angle that the strings hit the bridge from the stop tail in order to decrease tension on the strings which should make it easier to play
Bongo Nutty some people believe that over wrapping increases sustain. I haven't personally heard any difference either way.
The only ones shown on the Gibson site with over-wrapped tails are the ones with non-adjustable bridges, like the SG Juniors.
One thing I will say is your honest.

Les Pauls are finicky beasts. I love them but they are fiddly.
I've got a few.... after they settle in, they stabilize. SG is more fiddly than LP... but at 10 years old, mine finally settled.
Once you get one set up to your liking, there isn’t a better electric guitar than a Les Paul. The only other guitar that even comes close is a Telecaster.
