    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
The new Commissioner of baseball bans the "Black Sox" from the game forever.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
Writer/director John Sayles' dramatization of the most infamous episode in professional sports -- the fix of the 1919 World Series -- is considered by many to be among his best films and arguably the best baseball movie ever made. This adaptation of Eliot Asinof's definitive study of the scandal shows how athletes of another era were a different breed from the well-paid stars of later years. The Chicago White Sox owner, Charlie Comiskey (Clifton James), is portrayed as a skinflint with little inclination to reward his team for their spectacular season. When a gambling syndicate led by Arnold Rothstein (Michael Lerner) gets wind of the players' discontent, it offers a select group of stars -- including pitcher Eddie Cicotte (Sayles regular David Strathairn), infielder Buck Weaver (John Cusack), and outfielder "Shoeless" Joe Jackson (D.B. Sweeney) -- more money to play badly than they would have earned to try to win the Series against the Cincinnati Reds. Sayles cast the story with actors who look and perform like real jocks, and added a colorful supporting cast that includes Studs Terkel as reporter Hugh Fullerton and Sayles himself as Ring Lardner.

John Anderson was so good as Judge Landis..Straightforward, tough, no b.s. And I've read many times how much of an SOB Charley Comiskey was. Would turn water off to save money, belittle players (which is why so many hated him), and made no bones about being in this strictly for himself.

Jeffrey Nocera made the manager bench his ace for two weeks so he wouldn’t have to give him his 10k bonus for winning 30 games, wouldn’t wash the uniforms but when he did he took it from their checks. He was a sleeze bag

Wrong. Selig and the rest of major League baseball knew whar was up in the steroid era the entire time but decided to pretend they didn't know what was going on while throwing the players under the bus. That's why Jose Canseco wrote the book Juiced.

    • @paoerfulone1089

Selig should have banned himself along with them while he was at it by that logic. He knew all about it. He knew exactly what was going on in the game during that time. He simply ignored it and let it continue for as long as it did because Bonds, McGwire, Sosa, and those guys were bringing fans back to the game, along with new fans, and revitalized baseball after the strike of 1994 cancelled the rest of the season, including the World Series. The Summer of '98 covering the home run race between McGwire and Sosa to Roger Maris' record was the hottest story-line in sports that year. Subsequently, the biggest story-line in all sports from 2004 to 2007 was Bonds' pursuit of Hank Aaron's record. Whether they were loved or hated didn't matter, because people lined up the turnstiles and paid tons of money to see them. Which was all Selig and the higher ups cared about throughout that time. Fans came out in droves to watch Clemens, Pettite, and Gagne moe down hitters. The Steroid Era brought an air of excitement, energy, magic, and majesty back to the game of baseball that had been missing for a long time. Did that make it ok? No. But don't think for one second that Selig didn't know all about. He knew. But he stayed back and let it go on. And only when it was over, after he had sucked them dry of every last penny they gave the game, he left them out to dry. He's just as, if not more guilty, than they are. And if he's in the Hall of Fame, than Bonds, Clemens, McGwire, Sosa, and all those guys should be in as well. If not, than Selig should be kicked out.

Judge Landis accepted the role of Commissioner requesting a lifetime contract and absolute power to act in the best interests of baseball. Those were another times, do not expect the actual incumbent to perform the same way.

For what it's worth, the incumbent commissioner, despite having only been in power for 8 seasons as of the posting of this comment, has banned more people from baseball than his 4 immediate predecessors combined (Ueberroth banned nobody, Giammati banned Pete Rose, Fay Vincent banned George Steinbrenner and Steve Howe, and Bud Selig banned Marge Schott) and is second only to Landis for most ban hammer swings.

I think his measures are a must. If you want clean, honest players playing fair games, you have to be very strict about it in the first place. I can understand why they wanted to fix the games, but fixing games and accepting bribery are not right, whatever the reason might be. And examples are needed to prevent anyone who has any intention to fix games and accept bribery. I guess history has proven it right to be strict on it.

In my opinion, regardless if throwing the Series was right or wrong. The 8 players should not have been banned from baseball. (Not that it matters 100 yrs after the fact). The new rule came out after the verdict of the trial, after the incident.
New rules or laws, when implemented take effect from the point of implementation on. The incident happened prior.
An example, so to speak, would be like having a misdemeanor or 2 on your record and a new law implemented that those same misdemeanors were now felonies. Your record would indicate those were misdemeanors at the time of infraction. By banning these players is like upgrading your former misdemeanor charges to felonies on your record after they happened and were recorded as misdemeanors on your record. Which would hurt you in the workforce.
