Im lucky to only live 25 mins away from the nursery and every time I walk into the nursery I stop and admire this guy. Beautiful tree with amazing character
Yes indeed my friend your very lucky to live 25 minutes away. If I lived 25 minutes away I would be there all the time lol. And I would volunteer a lot to.
@@marcus7840 I visit as often as I can. I work as a gardener so I spent plenty of time with trees & forever find interesting native material here. Its a great place and all the staff are always fantastic. Cant wait to see the autumn colours

I was born in a city named Maplewood. I currently work for their public works department. Always think of Peter now when I work on our maples.
Peter, if Tridents are not popular anymore, so the Tridents don't feel unloved and just languishing on your benches ignored by the public if you want you can send me one and I will make sure it has a loving forever home. hahahahahahaha. Stunning trees.
Its all relative - I should have said that they are less popular than some other species.

The Frog Leaf Trident was so stunning ♥️
I gather my tried t seeds in the fall, then sow them under 1 inch of soil in the fall. They need the cold winter to germinate. I have good success the next spring.
A few years back we had a week in Melbourne where everyday was around 42 degrees Celsius. The lowest night time temperature for the week was 37 degrees. It makes keeping trees healthy much more difficult and limits the species you can keep.
Hope it didn't hit too many trees hard.

I just got my first seedlings this year! Each 2 too 3 years old, so far they amaze me with their ferocious back budding.
I love tridents. Maybe over there they are not in demand but in Australia we would love some with that kind of age
I bought a Trident 4 years ago as a seedling. I have only pruned to make a triangle shape. I kept the sacrificial lower shoot and the tree trunk is much thicker. You have taught me so much!! I have 6 different maples now, all planted in very large pots.

After Wisley on Monday we are stopping in Brighton overnight Tuesday and Wednesday and will be visiting the nursery first thing Thursday morning, 9th Sept before travelling on the Battle and Hastings later in the day. Being coarse northerners (😆) we are not often in that part of the world and it would be criminal to miss the opportunity to stop by 😀

The frog leaf trident as you call it is endemic to Taiwan. There is debate that it might even be its own species. It is more heat tolerant than the conventional trident with those thick, leathery leaves. I've had one in Florida and it can handle direct sunlight in all but the hottest days of summer and grows quite vigorously in our tropical climate. With how short and mild our winters are, and even milder in Taiwan, I'd go as far to say it might even be able to survive as a semi-evergreen.
Yes you are right - there is a variety called 'Formosanum'

Peter I’m 29 years old . Fairly new to bonsai 2 years . I don’t even know why I’m not to fond of trident maples . I love lots of Acer palmatum though
Western Canada in the First Week of July this year hit 45 to 48 C.
We too had the hottest summer on record here in the Pacific Northwest. My water bill is through the roof.

Is the tree with the hollow at 13:00 also a trident maple?
I have pre bonsai that look the same. But they grew extremely easily from seed, so I'm wondering if they're Amur maples.

Very nice tridents!! I have 2 tridents that all the leaves roll it and the apical shot get black and died, can you explain to me why this hapens!!!
Peter, you mention that trident seeds are difficult to germinate. What would be the best way to do it?
Dont seem to have much luck with Maples! Too wet and windy down here in Cornwall. Very difficult to obtain nursery stock of Tridents.
I understood that scorching in maples occurs also when you use very hard water because salts block the roots so they cannot feed the leaves. Somebody has opinions on this?

Light pruning yes - not heavy pruning

Peter, you are not crazy. I think that all bonsai are "ongoing projects." A bonsai tree is never done. There is always something that needs to be done.
That's what I enjoy about it. It is living art. Always changing. I started doing Bonsai myself 2 years ago. I love it so much!!! Peter has inspired me so much on my journey. If he is crazy, I am even crazier!! Lol
I have a trident forest that the leafs have yellow spots. Anyone have an idea why I would appreciate the help

PETER, does a tree have to have a front? what i mean is that way it would be viewed all the way around instead of from one direction,, thank you for the tips
NO - a bonsai does not have to have a front. If it is nice from all sides then the question of front and back does not arise.
I live in east Texas and Tridents grow great through the spring but summer get black around the leaf edges it’s frustrating.
What do you use to feed Trident Maples?

Once it's developed a little more it may be closer to the real price than you think. These are exceptional specimens for serious collectors.

Hi Pete! I noticed you said that trees kept in very small pots in the UK suffer compared to trees in small pots in China. Why is that? Is it something to do with the climate that affects the trees’ tolerance to being in a small pot?

In Japan not China - this is because in Japan they have the rainy season when it gets very wet and humidity in Japan is much higher than in UK
Question, you mentioned growing from stumps. I’ve got a Holly stump no branches, it’s in a deep pot. Does this stump need full sun? Thank you in advance.
Yes but Hollies might not grow as fast as Tridents. But the general principles are the same.

First time actually seeing examples of inarching....any chance of this being a considered tutorial??
I have 3 Tridents, all young. ( 12, 12, 8 ) Mine get about 4 to 5 hours of direct sun, and the rest of the day are covered by 40% shade cloth. No scorching this year so far.
We too, here in VA have had the hottest July ever recorded, and brutal 90 degree heat ALL summer. Months and months.
I am not trained enough to get such beautiful pads on my trees, but I do cut shoots back, letting them get long, then clipping them...even this late in the summer.
One of my Tridents, has three trunks after about 4 inches from the base. I'm at a loss of what to do with it, but one of the trunks was growing a VERY thick branch to the side from where the nursery that sold it, had trunk cut it some time ago..
I didnt like the way the tree was developing with this particular top, so I took a chance and trunk chopped this one trunk back down a bit. Being new, not knowing enough, I took the top that got cut off, dipped it in hormone, and planted it in a seedling cup. To my GREAT surprise, IT'S SHOOTING MANY, MANY LEAVES!!!! I cant believe it. This is a spectacular little specimen. Its only 2inches tall, has about 20 very small cut off branches that are all shooting, with the trunk 3/4" thick....the leaves are about 1/2" long, with more shooting every week...I now have to figure a way to keep it safe through the winter....Great video.. Thanks from a Trident super fan!!!

@@peterchan3100 I migth be wrong in this case, however often feel like I get really useful tips from your videos, but I cannot apply them right away, since my own plants are already past the showcased stage. This might just be because of the slightly different climate of the UK and central Europe. This is supposed to be a small constructive criticism, I still love all your videos and always look forward to the next one! :)
Hi Peter, you have so many trees, have you thought about auctioning some of your maple trees. I would happily be bidding on some of them. You could set up a bidding page on your website!
Do you realise how much these Tridents are worth or what they are selling for now?
These beautiful trees are worth thousands and thousands of pounds. A website auction is not really an appropriate way of selling them.
I do realise how much they are worth and people are willing to bid tens of thousands for them. They will be somebody else’s trees some day, you only live once!… some of us have enough money to buy. Oh well.
Why work all your life just to hold onto them, at the very least create a page on the website to show and sell these lovely trees … most people show what they are selling but Herons show a picture of what you might get. If I knew what I was buying, I would buy, trust me.
Also what feed does peter use?
I use a mix of different fertilisers including Japanese Rape seed.

They need a crane to lift. Besides - our large trees are not shown on our on line store as they are for collection only. Not cheap I warn you.
@@peterchan3100 thanks for the reply - yeah i can imagine those have to be really heavy - but for example the trident maple at 25:25 - how heavy is this tree? I have got a maple root over rock its like 65kg - not fun carrying around - I would really like to buy a tree like that the only thing is i dont want a 200kg bonsai ... like you said you would need a crane :)
I got dry back leafes on acer palmatum in this summer (2021) in Germany. Max temperature barely 30°C. So not watering properly cannot be the only reason for dry leafes. Does anybody know other reasons? I am so sick of this bad growing behavior of my acer palmatums. They flush, get partly die back right after that and in August all leafes are drying out... 😡

Peter: This tree is over 50 years old. I don't grow from seeds because it is a very tedious process.
