I spit a watermelon seeds out my back door and walked outside one day to find an entire watermelon grown back there. It was one of the best I ever had. Dont think I should have too much problem growing one lol
Watermelons basically LOVE my area! I live in Northern Georgia, and the summer days are nice and hot in the day, pretty warm in the night, and LOTS of rainy days! Watermelons are a breeze to grow in our area, just the waiting is hard. In fact, I just got a 16-pounder about a week ago!
I'm in TN , and my Grandfather always told me to bust the Ground in the fall, add sand, and cow manure, and mound it it. Let it mellow over the winter , then plant in May or early June (I believe). He said sand is important, but the cow manure that over winters makes them sweet. Wheat Straw to mulch the melons. If they need water be sure to water in the late afternoon . Seems like it was 5 gal per plant. Just from memory.
We did watermelon last year, and they did pretty well. I mulched them heavily in grass clippings, which seemed to do the job well of both supplying plenty of nitrogen and keeping it very moist in the soil. Have you heard the trick for telling ripeness where the tendril at the end of the stem browns? It worked well for us this year, but I didn't know if it was just a myth. :-)
The first time I planted melons it was a huge success; in a space of about 20' x 10' I had two hills (actually I don't do hills, but instead dig a bowl shape into the ground)-- one of watermelons and one of cantaloupes. When I was planting the seeds I accidentally spilled them! I decided to just go with it and I ended up with seven watermelon plants growing from the same spot, and 4 or 5 cantaloupe plants also growing from the same spot (separate from the watermelons.) My garden turned into an enormous jungle, but when August came I harvested 13 large Crimson Sweet watermelons (the largest was 35 pounds) and 23 Hales Best cantaloupes! I waited to eat the cantaloupes until they fell of the vine-- INCREDIBLE taste! When I planted these melons I set a soaker hose out and then covered the ground with black plastic which kept the soil warm (very warm here in southeastern Washington) and used standard Miracle Grow fertilizer once during the summer. Today I'll be starting my second melon garden, so we'll see how it goes this year!
This is my first year growing watermelons, i live beside the “power lines” and have taken a section over for my gardening, plenty of sun, Plenty of rain, plenty of hills. I transplanted my melons and on a hillside where they get unobstructed sun all day and they have spread out wonderfully. I didn’t realize I needed as much room. I just they stop growing before they hit my pumpkin patch. I enjoy the information I receive fro this channel and translate it to my regional grow season. Enjoy and Happy Gardening.
I planted 1 watermelon and 2 pumpkins beside each other with plenty of room to grow and this is my first year growing anything and my melons are growing amazingly and it's been really simple to grow.
I live in TX. Usually we’ll just throw the remains from a watermelon in the yard and it’ll take over the area fairly quickly with no maintenance. This is my first year constructing a full garden and I would like to have a crop of more orderly melon plants haha. Thanks for this tips!
I live in the Yucatan and after having some workers eat watermelon in the backyard, a watermelon plant appeared... and it's doing amazing. I don't do anything for it, it's hot and rains every afternoon here. I can't wait to see the melons this thing produces.
For those of you wondering if it can be grown in containers or just a smaller soil, yes-ish. Naturally, as mentioned, plants have an incredibly large spread but the root system has an even larger one than the top grown (avg 15 feet radius with 4ft taproot but few feeder roots below 1ft). With that said, you can work with less, the plants won't be as happy but you may get fruit.
Eric Kelley: I live in middle TN and grow watermelons and cantaloupe every year without problem. I get some great results by building up a mound about a foot high and till a "moat" around the hill and then put straw around it so it helps hold moisture.
Save all your fall leaves and tul them into that clay.. clay actually has the highest nutrients levels of almost any natural soil around. Amend it with lots of cow manure and composted leaves every fall and you'll have amazing soil. I've grown watermelons and giant pumpkins in heavy clay soil..(Wisconsin)

It's the 5th of April 2022 here in Southern Illinois and it's been a chilly one so far, nights around 35 and days around 55-60 degrees. I hope it warms up quickly I'm ready to plant these babies! LOL I'm glad I'm starting early because I didn't realize watermelons had such a slow maturing rate. It's ok, we have a good long summer here in Southern Illinois. For a shorter season and more cold tolerant watermelon, Golden Midget was developed in Saskatchewan and is an heirloom. To those saying they are easy to grow, it depends on many factors. I tried again for 2018 with only small varieties and still only got a single one off of a Sugar Baby vine. Yes I had a great garden with awesome drainage and fertilizing, watered it well, was in a spot that got lots of sun etc and still not much success.
Thank you for the helpful information. I am growing 9 Crimson Sweet Watermelon and 4 Athena Cantaloupe plants in our garden this summer in our garden. I live in comercial watermelon region in drylands Brazil. Watermelons need a lot of water to come up, but after that they are very resistant to drought! Here we plant them at the end of the rainy season to produce at the beginning of the dry season. Thus: no powdery mildew! A good solution for any fungal problem is diluted milk ( 1-20). The farmers here fertilize very minimally their watermelons: nothing or a tiny amount of manure....Very poor white sands... Watermelons are native to Africa, where they use the last monsoon rains to come up, and cover the dry grasses. So here they are actually planted in dry pastures!
I have been watching your videos on gardening and they are very informative. I especially like the harvesting videos. It's such a joy to harvest and enjoy what I have grown.
I had some accidentally sprout from my garbage disposal. I threw seeds in from a watermelon I ate and didn't immediately turn on the disposal. Then I went on vacation for 10 days. it was a little scary to see something sprouting from my sink when I got home. Then I pulled them out and realized what they were. Unfortunately, I don't have a yard, so sadly, I had to throw them away.
One thing I do remember from horticulture in class in highschool is when planting, like you did at the end of the video, the teacher taught us to pinch the end of the root cluster/dirt off to helps stimulate new growth faster .
Nights in the 50s and 60s are fine if you mulch heavy around the base of the plant so that the roots stay warm over night. I grow Georgia Rattlers in Colorado. Summer temps here can change radically. The day time temps will drop 30 to 35 degrees at night. My biggest rattler so far has been 26lbs.
If you mulch, be careful and check often for pill bugs (rollie pollies). They love moist mulch and will start to eat your vines too and do a lot of damage to the plant. If that happens, remove all mulch, vine the plant up a trellis and get rid of any dead leaves or debris near it.
My 4yo wanted to plant watermelon (crimson sweet) this year in zone 9. We are keeping the soil moist and he’s having fun watching it grow. I put a cup ,with holes in the bottom, in the ground that fits the hose in it so the plant never has to get wet. We haven’t had any issues with white mildew yet....so far, so good.
Would love to hear your take on trellising melons. I’ve seen others do it, using melon “hammocks” made from panty hose, fabric, or netting. Probably only good for smaller melon varieties, but a real space saver.
I've never had mildew problems. The only reason that I can think that is is that I cover my whole garden with about two feet of straw. I make sure the plants stay on top of it. The straw stays dry on top but also holds plenty of moisture underneath. Win win
We planted a few of the MIGARDNER seeds last year as an experiment (in Orlando) and they did awesome! The one plant produced enough melons for us to enjoy and share with some family and friends (5 from 1 plant). Thank you!
Your videos are so helpful! I cannot thank you enough. Your advice on plants is outstanding! I have been growing my own mini garden (consisting of veggies, herbs, and fruit) any questions I have I come to your channel and my garden is doing better than ever 😊
I'm about to plant some seeds from a watermelon that grew by itself in our desert yard. It was a miracle because it grew a sweet, juicy, small watermelon so I'm gonna try planting the seeds where they'll get more TLC. See what happens. Anyway, thanks for the video!
Our family did the personal size watermelons and cantelopes. We grew them up hog panels about 18 inches apart. They were between baseball and softball size and sweet. Ripe by late August. Update us on how you did with large melons in MI.
Northern Indiana here, planted 8 Georgia rattlesnake watermelon seeds in a 5x12 raised bed back in the beginning of May. I usually take a hose to the garden when I know it’s going to be really hot and then once a week any other time. I can’t speak on the quality of the melons yet but they are about the size of my fist now. The vines have spread about 5ft outside of the bed so far. Same bed has 5 cucumber vines growing and producing cucumbers. I was just doing this as a goof project and the vines are crazy but it’s doing good so far it seems.
I planted watermelon seeds in the ground in well draining soil here in Japan, but so far I have just large sprawling plants.. no fruit yet. Crossing fingers and toes to get some nice melons this year. My first try so wish me luck :)
This is my third year gardening, so I guess I would consider myself an intermediate gardener. I’ve planted two watermelons this year, so we will see how it goes! Thanks for the awesome tips 👍🏼
I live in Denver and I’m going to try Secretariat Seedless- (80 days) in large pots on top of my flat roof garage. ZERO shade. I’m an optimistic gambler! I’ll start them indoors in (slightly) spacious pots, and under a halide indoors. It’s a good idea to use black plastic mulch (slice holes into it for water seapage) after transplanting, that way, the soil heats up quickly and they can really take off! 🤞🏻🍉
My father use to be watermelon farmer all his life I loved to go to farm and see his watermelons I tried to grow some watermelon in Vancouver Canada but because of cold and rainy weather I could not Thank you for the video I keep to watch your video
I got my first 3 babies this week. Growing from a 3 gallon flower pot. Trellis half Vines and letting other vines trell the ground on a straw bed. Easy peasy
I have been told by experienced gardeners that watermelons actually like heat and not that much water. I am trying some different varieties this year, one that was developed in Saskatchewan so should be perfectly suited to our summers (normally dry and hot, and this one may not be any different). They are also a much shorter season melon than the average one, at around 90 days. My greenhouse friend found a perfect solution to powdery mildew-just spray with skim milk. She said it worked immediately on her cucumbers that got it.
I just bought a house in June of last year with 3/4 acre of land and I am trying 3 different types of watermelons this year Tender sweet orange, Sugar baby, and Crimson Sweet
Thanks so much for all of the information. This year is my best for watermelons and after viewing your guide I can see where I went wrong in the past. You explain everything in detail and it's definitely not boring. I'm now off to watch the rest of your videos :-) Cheers!
I’m in Southern Africa have a success with cantaloupe, just threw a couple of seeds and it grew with little effort. Watermelon I tried but powdery mildew and spiderwebs, etc makes it too sensitive. However I’m trying both watermelon and cantaloupe on raised beds under netting against birds, which chew first seedlings of two weeks pushing me back. Looking forward
I've grown watermelon from the Burpees seed pack, in a north state, that has nothing but clay soil. The melons turned out fine. They weren't 20 pounders but several grew. I've done this twice. Had melons growing into the end of fall time.
I remember growing watermelon in kindergarten right in front of our daycare and eating it for lunch at the end of the summer. I bought a plant 2 days ago that had a couple of leaves and planted it in my (clay soil) side yard cuz i didn't know where to put it. I checked on it today after it rained last night and it already shot out two new stems! I'd say if you live anywhere in the south, watermelon's gonna be pretty easy for you to grow.
I never knew they were so difficult, my Mom grew them on the side of her house with us spitting seeds but we're in TX so good heat and now I know why she grew them by the house, she utilized the shade there. We have a sandy look soil with a hint of clay.
I have grown sugar baby watermelon in the past, in a raised bed garden. If you can make a box 4 x 4 with the walls about 2 feet high. (The walls will get hot from the sun, which helps the roots stay warm) The sugar baby as it grows I will trellis it. Actually bagging the fruit when it is tiny in something that will expand. Like ask your wife to save old pantyhose. Cutting it in squares. The fruit will expand in it. Also trellis it, tying the little bags to the trellis holding up the fruit. To make sure the plant was able to have a constant source of water. Use wine bottles sticking the open end of the bottle in the ground next to each plant. Often filling the bottle with manure tea. I live in northern NJ, and it worked well.
I love experimenting and I'm just starting the process of getting my garden ready for a large long L shape raised bed. I want to try trellising small watermelons when my bed is done
This was my first garden and my watermelon did FABULOUS, they sure took up alot of space, the more space I gave them the more they took but they were so good!
Your guide to planting watermelon is helpful. I cannot stand powdery mildew. When you make the baking soda mixture to spray the plant, how often should I spray it? Can I spray it ahead of time to prevent powdery mildew?
Colorado her at zone 5. I’m growing black diamond here and my two plants are massive. Lots of frost, one already is baseball in size. Really excited here. Also growing 3 honeydews. They’re also producing some fruit.
Watermelons are easy to grow. I just plant them and water until established. They're in northern WV clay soil and never fed at all. About 100 days from transplant........delicious. They do need a LOT more than 25' ft per plant though!
We have space for Ive got 5 types of melons to try! I love melons in the summer and am hoping to have so many for our family! Thank you for this video.
So it is too late for melons here in TX?! I failed in the past, by planting in poor soil. Now I have homemade compost and my plants thrive in it. I had some seeds that germinated so I planted them. Perhaps they won't make it to harvest. If not, they will be thrown into the fall compost piles :)
We grew a few Sugar Baby plants with zero experience last year. They were poorly placed, and probably received less than 6 hours of sunlight a day. We got 4 small, but delicious melons. Planting 6-7 more this year from seed, in a better place.
I started my wmelon inside. I put them in 20 gallon contain. I put a mixture of manure, compost and sand, with bagged garden dirt. I plan on putting a mixture of yeast and sugar on them for fertilizer. Also some blood meal and bone meal. It's been yrs since I grew any melon.
Great video! I grow Blacktail Mountain watermelon directly from seed in the ground in zone 5. It is better for ripening in cooler weather than most other varieties. Would love to see a growing guide for cauliflower. Thanks!
I looked at that one. Have you grown it successfully already? If my jubilees don't make it (and I could not have started them sooner) then I will try those next.
Just planted 2 watermelon plants in the outdoor garden en 2 in the greenhouse. I hope to get water melons from these Sugar baby plants outdoors, but surely from my indoor plants. Last year i only grew them indoors. Great harvest.! Thanks for your guide! Oh yes we are in the Netherlands. Zone 7.
For thise with a shorter season like in my own native new England id recommend smaller watermelon varieties. I myself am growing otome, kaho and early moonbeam in my garden this year. I got them from baker creek.
this was pretty helpful. I bought a watermelon for $3 and I thought I would just buy one for the heck of it so I didn't know much. I looked it up and it said you should put watermelon in a 5 gallon bucket (With holes) and give it 2 gallons of water a day and it has been doing okay.
I spit a watermelon seeds out my back door and walked outside one day to find an entire watermelon grown back there. It was one of the best I ever had. Dont think I should have too much problem growing one lol

I have been watching your videos on gardening and they are very informative. I especially like the harvesting videos. It's such a joy to harvest and enjoy what I have grown.
Got 4 planted from seeds a couple of weeks ago here in Michigan. First one just came up today and I'm very excited!
I accidentally grew watermelons from my compost pile 🤷🏻♀️ The perks of living in Florida I guess.
No joke
How many watermelons did you get? And alligators?
Do you feed it to aligators or crocodiles?
I had some accidentally sprout from my garbage disposal. I threw seeds in from a watermelon I ate and didn't immediately turn on the disposal. Then I went on vacation for 10 days. it was a little scary to see something sprouting from my sink when I got home. Then I pulled them out and realized what they were. Unfortunately, I don't have a yard, so sadly, I had to throw them away.
Did this in Michigan, grew two watermelons from my lazy compost pile
One thing I do remember from horticulture in class in highschool is when planting, like you did at the end of the video, the teacher taught us to pinch the end of the root cluster/dirt off to helps stimulate new growth faster .
I'll be putting my melon growing to the test this year with watermelons and cantaloupe.
We have sand. Our watermelons do great. Just picked 4 last weekend, volunteer plants from last year. Best ones ever.
That’s what I’m doing this year....seems to be working so far with the fruit and vine. Have not harvested yet!
You are my favorite person to watch on TH-cam!! Thank you for everything you do!!!
Thank you!
When do you start planting I want to try as well
Sitting here in the midst of winter I envy you sitting in the beautiful dirt planting beautiful plants lol.
That's so great
Plant a few seeds by a downspout or under tomato plants. They get very long, but so fun to grow.
🍉 Thank you for adding info on the Sugar Baby Watermelon! 🍉 Trying them for the first time. I love your videos. Thank you! 🍉
Huge help thank you! My kids insisted on growing Watermelon in the garden this year
I planted watermelon seeds in the ground in well draining soil here in Japan, but so far I have just large sprawling plants.. no fruit yet.
Lol it is my first year growing and I’ve already made a huge mistake… they recovered fast!
My father use to be watermelon farmer all his life I loved to go to farm and see his watermelons I tried to grow some watermelon in Vancouver Canada but because of cold and rainy weather I could not
Thank you for the video I keep to watch your video
I grew 18 plants in a small yard of 30 foot by 25 feet
New to all this.. grateful for the video and info. Keep the videos coming for us newbies
Thanks so much for all of the information. This year is my best for watermelons and after viewing your guide I can see where I went wrong in the past. You explain everything in detail and it's definitely not boring. I'm now off to watch the rest of your videos :-) Cheers!
LETS GOOOO SOUTH WEST FLORIDA. FINALLY SOMETHING I CAN GROW HERE.
I'm growing sugar baby watermelon and they are doing great! I live in Alabama.
Awesome!!! Let us know when you get the first ripe melon!
I live in Alamaba too
Same here
I accedentally grew things and was surprised when the ripened so small
Hey Bama! I have a home in Daphne, Alabama ("Jubilee City"). A good part of growing up there for me.
We have a
sandy look soil with a hint of clay.
Last year i was finally successful growing watermelons in south Mississippi, we ate 5 of them it was so exciting
I did grow some water melon this year for the first time they reach up to 40 to 45 pounds.
Tell me how is it possible
I'll be growing 2 kinds of watermelons next year, the sugar baby and also petite yellow. Looking forward to seeing how they both come out.
How did it go?
We also struggled but this year we are growing them vertically. So far so good. We’ll let y’all know .
The video that I've been waiting for! Thanks
006canadian YAY! So glad it helped.
Your guide to planting watermelon is helpful. I cannot stand powdery mildew. When you make the baking soda mixture to spray the plant, how often should I spray it? Can I spray it ahead of time to prevent powdery mildew?
I like as soon as I click, cause I know your contents always good.
Colorado her at zone 5. I’m growing black diamond here and my two plants are massive. Lots of frost, one already is baseball in size. Really excited here. Also growing 3 honeydews. They’re also producing some fruit.
Hi Luke, I hope you have a book in the works. I need all this stuff in your head on paper. Thank you for always being so generous! 🌸
Amazing quality!
Watermelons are easy to grow. I just plant them and water until established. They're in northern WV clay soil and never fed at all. About 100 days from transplant........delicious. They do need a LOT more than 25' ft per plant though!
Douglas Cooke I like in southern WV. The ground here is very hard. This is my first time trying to grow them. Any pointers you could give me?
It depends where you live, depending on where you are in the world it might be easy and it might be hard.
We have space for Ive got 5 types of melons to try! I love melons in the summer and am hoping to have so many for our family! Thank you for this video.
Love my mf foot massage women
Being in Texas our growing season is veeeeery long lol.
haha I bet! I wish we had the growing season texas has, but I wouldn't want the heat you guys have!
So it is too late for melons here in TX?! I failed in the past, by planting in poor soil. Now I have homemade compost and my plants thrive in it. I had some seeds that germinated so I planted them. Perhaps they won't make it to harvest. If not, they will be thrown into the fall compost piles :)
christofire100 saras
Here in Australia, our growing season is long too lol
christofire100 yes very long😊
We grew a few Sugar Baby plants with zero experience last year. They were poorly placed, and probably received less than 6 hours of sunlight a day. We got 4 small, but delicious melons. Planting 6-7 more this year from seed, in a better place.
I live in Denmark I don’t even know why I’m watching this whole video😂😂
🤣
You're a dreamer...
🤣
Growing these for first time! Thnks for helpful video!😃
Regarding leaf mildew mitigation , never over spray always water from below leaf cover at ground level .
Northeastern Minnesota I grow Sugar Baby watermelons, 90 to 120 days and at 10 pounds , go right in the fridge. Nice video.
Guess I'll focus on how to pick them out at the grocery :)
It's fun to try.
Zone 7.
Thanks buddy for sharing the knowledge.
We grew beautiful, ripe, organic sugar baby watermelons trellised and pantyhose-supported in much less than 150 days. It was more like 70.
