      @@bennym1956 I was living in orlando. If anything I would say the ground remained very moist that time of year. Can't recall a lot of rain in particular. But certain times of year that backyard stays wet and now that I think of it we probably were getting a lot of morning dew. Sometimes so much the car is dripping water in the mornings and covered in water beads and the grass has a lot of water as a result.

      @@bennym1956 also once I discovered they were growing, I stopped cutting the grass where they were. This helped retain moisture and provide sun protection.

    I did not know they have shallow roots. I’ve never fertilized but I’m going to now. I know neighbors that won’t grow watermelons because they take up so much room. I actually take my vines and continuously keep spiraling the vines around the plant as they grow. This keeps down weeds because they are in more shade and I can till around them longer. I’ve never had a melon crowding problem with cantaloupes or watermelons training them this way.

    Very interesting video about growing watermelons. Next time I will have to find a way to not get water on my jubilee watermelon vines. I would also like to try to grow a different kind of watermelon for next year. The only reason I packed my vines with soil because it was getting near of dying in this extreme Arizona June heat. Yes watermelon vines look extremely healthy when we don’t pack soil or try to get no water on the vines especially the leaves due to a disease resistant. I ended up getting the 4 plants back to life and I thought I wasn’t going to get watermelons this year. Also I had my first pumpkin plant I ever grew before and I had a solid nice big moon pumpkin half the size of a cantaloupe and I tried protecting it and nothing helped besides fried it. The vines were super healthy and and I did had a few rats chew on my forming melons and some of my vines before I came up with solar lights. It helps a lot with them now. I thank you ☺️ and appreciate this AWSOME video you have made. 😎👍🏼👏🏼🍉

    You folks are awesome! I am a beekeeper and pollinate the local produce farms, they tell me that they noticed a huge increase in fruit once they had the proper pollination. On another note I purchased your drip irrigation package. One of the best things I ever bought, can't believe I waited this long to try drip irrigation. Your complete kit worked perfectly after I turned the 1 way pressure reducer in the proper direction of flow... do you raise hogs or cattle? Noticed some gates and barns behind you.... I agree with what you're saying. Rotation and fertilizer and irrigation are important. I grow just a patch of watermelons in my garden in Ohio. I don't sell them. So, I don't need top yield. I use 12-12-12 garden fertilizer and black plastic over drip tape and a simple irrigation timer that waters them slowly for four hours everyday. The black plastic warms the soil faster because of our shorter growing season and it reduces the amount of water lost. My biggest headache is staying ahead of the weeds which can take over in a matter of days if I don't constantly pull them out. They come through even the tiniest holes in the plastic. Have you found any good herbicide to control the weeds in your watermelon?

      Good day I would like to try watermelons this year and would like to try your method of growing. Can you please share how often you apply the 12 12 12 fertilizer. Is this fertilizer a slow release granule? Many thanks for your help.

    • @Robb403
      @Robb403 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ElizabethNMason I add some fertilizer to the soil when I first till up the garden and then I dig a hole and put some in the bottom for each mound. That feeds the roots when they get longer. Watermelon has a heavy demand for water. So, be prepared to water frequently and use a plastic weed barrier if you can. It helps conserve water also. I use drip irrigation myself.

    What’s the point of using organic fertilizer to start if your just going to kill it with 20-20-20 salts?

      Using a combination of organic and synthetic minimizes your salt load in the soil.

      A good preplant application and/or fertilizer makes a lot of difference. You can use liquid, but would need to apply more often.

    I live in north central Florida on 6 acres of literally one huge highway of/for fire ants. Everything I plant will have fire ants crawling all over them eventually. I’m starting to grow vegetables (vs just flowers and plants for aesthetics) how can I keep them off the plants, but what I really need to know is, are they harmful? I know there are some benefits but can they kill your plants?

    • @gardeningwithhoss
      @gardeningwithhoss  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ants are not harmful to the plants. Recommend product Advion fire ant bait or Extinguish plus fire ant bait. We do not carry these.

    How often do you water your watermelons?

    • @gardeningwithhoss
      @gardeningwithhoss  ปีที่แล้ว

      Watermelon Irrigation Requirements
      Irrigation for your watermelon plants is one of, if not the most important, aspects of growing healthy watermelons. We always recommend using a drip tape irrigation system for several reasons.
      1. Once the watermelons have developed a strong vine and foliage, getting water to the root system can be difficult with overhead watering.
      2. Watermelons, in general, have typical disease issues. Drip irrigation will help keep moisture off the leaves and at the root system where it’s needed the most. Extended leaf wetness can easily cause disease in your crop.
      3. Watermelons don’t do well under stress and improper irrigation is a major stress factor on plants. Drip irrigation ensures each plant is is getting the required amount of moisture.
      Overall, the rule of thumb when growing watermelons is thatwatermelon plants require 1″ - 2″ of water per week while they are growing and producing flowers and fruits.Depending on your zone, if you have more rain during the summer, be sure and account for extra moisture in your irrigation schedule. Once the melons start to produce, decreasing the amount of water weekly will help give you a sweeter fruit during harvesting.
