Mario 3 alone makes whatever year it was released, the best one. Nothing else was even close to how perfectly crafted that game was. Mario 3 is a work of art. It's an 11 out of 10.

I turned 7 in the summer of 90 and can say without a doubt that was an amazing year to be a kid playing all the new games. Sharing amongst friends and helping each other get past tough spots… nothing like it.

Did anybody notice we got a bunch of "3" games in 1990? Super Mario Bros. 3, Castlevania 3, Mega Man 3, Thunder Force 3 for Sega Genesis? In Japan, they got the original Final Fantasy 3!
Game Genie also included codes for handicapping the player, like starting with 1 life, or a lower jump. So not always a "cheat"... but kids looked at those and asked why they'd want to do that!

I remember getting my NES in Christmas 1989. Then my Mom got me Double Dragon 2 in 1990. I mostly rented my NES games at my local video store during the early 1990’s.

Ah, 1990. The year i graduated and went into the Navy. I was born in 71, my first system was the Atari 2600 in 81 for Xmas. Then got the NES for Xmas in 86. Me and my friends played the Hell out of Nintendo! My first and main Go to games were Zelda, Metroid, Mike Tyson Punch Out, Top Gun, Contra, MegaMan, plus more. I ended buying a Nintendo Gameboy when I went in the Navy. I went through so many batteries! LoL! Good Video 👍

Thanks for the episode! I was born in January 1981, so I was a prime age to experience and appreciate the “NES” (we all just called it “Nintendo” because that was the only Nintendo system we knew or cared about). We didn’t really think all the games coming out were amazing because we weren’t looking back with rose-coloured glasses. We obviously knew Mario 3 and Mega Man 3, etc., were awesome, but to us, this was the norm. Nintendo reigned supreme and they defined the era and what video games were. They were part of the fabric of our lived experience and talking about our progress in games was often the topic of conversation at school. We had no idea the year was turning out to be epic. We just thought that Nintendo was so freakin’ fun. I got together with my friend and we pinned raccoon ears and a tail on ourselves and jumped around, pretending to be Mario and Luigi. We recorded ourselves on audio cassettes playing Mario 3 so we could hear the music and sound effects. Nintendo was so engrained in our lives, but we still were active and played sports and explored outside. It was a great time!

I was born January 1986. I still have the NES my parents bought right before I was born along with the Gauntlet 2 game we used to play. I have memories on that very console playing that very game with my parents, brothers, & neighborhood kids. It's awesome that I can make new memories with my own wife & kids on something from my earliest memories!! Super Mario 3 was the first mario game I played & got me through a lot of difficulties in my life. I still play today!

Out of those games in this video, I own 9 of them out of my personal collection of 27. So I'm PRETTY sure you are on to something. 😉 It always seems that later years of a console have some amazing releases. It would be interesting to see similar years for the Genesis, SNES, Xbox and PS2. Nice work boys. 👍

I love the NES because there's always hidden gems to find.....even Mario games. So everyone knows that there's a harder version of Super Mario Bros 2 which was called the Lost Levels and was released in Japan, but not everyone knows there's a harder version of Super Mario Bros 1 and Super Mario Bros 3....and no it's not a hacked version. These were official releases from Nintendo called Super Mario Bros VS and Super Mario Bros 3 (Japan Version). They are MUCH harder than the regular versions with Super Mario Bros VS being a little like Lost Levels with some difficulty tweaks here and there. Then we have SMB3 Japan which makes you play like SMB1 in that even if you are wearing Fire Mario or Tanoki Mario etc...you will go all the way back down to little Mario if you get hit once. It's a unique twist and you should definitely try it!

Great video as always Gents. Can’t really join the discussion because us peasants in the UK were so far behind in getting the NES stuff back in the day. Believe we got Super Mario Bros 3 in 1991.
Crazy world we lived in back then eh? I was born in June 1986, so four months earlier than Wes and my memories revolve around the Amiga. Didn’t really know what Nintendo was until a few years later when playing Mario All-Stars and Donkey Kong Country around a mates house on the SNES.

Summer of ‘89 I bought a Genesis with my own earnings at 13 but due to the lack of titles and friends who owned one, still played NES for a couple years thereafter (Until SNES dropped). NES was king for many years and really defined what video games were to my generation (Difficulty, cheapskateassedness and rage quits aside). I picked up a used NES from a mail order FuncoLand ad around 1997 or 1998 when I was in middle school. The NES was dead at this point, but my local Toys R Us still had several copies of Star Tropics, so I picked one up. They also had NES Advantages on clearance. I really regret not grabbing one of those. Star Tropics was such a hard game, but had a really cool aesthetic. I don't think I beat it till I was in college.

I would say that the last year of the NES was the best, because games stack, remember. All games that had been made before still existed, for the most of it. At the end, all NES games existed. It was such a wonderful time when NES and Snes were both active systems. It felt like it was going to stay that way, and that life was going to be great!

Yoo, Snake's Revenge. I got that in a $5 score at a local automotive swap meet back in like 2012 maybe. It was a leather wrapped Nintendo game carrying hardcase. I got about a dozen or so games like Snake's Revenge, Tiger Heli, etc. the more military type games. But the real winner was the huge amount of manuals in the case. There's gotta be like 40 manuals in there, for a lot of games that I didn't get. I think Yo! Noid might be one of those. I'd have to go find the thing to check exactly what's in there. When we lament the state of game hunting today, these are the types of deals we're talking about. You're generally just not gonna find that anymore.

I was 10 and I remember going to the rental store every weekend to see what new games they got and deciding what new game I wanted to play. Always had the best selection and I was happy for it. I didn't buy a lot of games just Xmas and bday so almost every weekend I rented a new game.

1990 was the year that had the most releases by far. According to a list
    1985: 18
    1986: 17
    1987: 59
    1988: 69
    1989: 112
    1990: 200
    1991: 127
    1992: 114
    1993: 51
    1994: 13
    1995: 1
    1996: 1
1994 was the last year with licensed games, 1995 and 1996 both had a singular unlicensed game

TMNT2 was massive. As kids we were all a bit disappointed by the first one because we didn't get it, as you mentioned. It also grew on me later. It was a game aimed at 8 year olds and it was hard as F! They more than made up for that with TMNT2. That was my favorite beat em up game for a long long time. Dragon Warrior also grew on me when I was older. Someone bought it for me when I was really young and I had no clue what I was supposed to do. I thought it was terrible. Tried it a few times, then it sat in my NES case for years. Tried it again when I was closer to 12, was one of my favorites for a while. Yeah Manhattan Project was even better, but too late in the NES lifespan to make the same impact the 2nd one did. The Genesis was out for years by this point (although nobody knew it until Sonic came out) and the SNES was released the year prior. 16 bit TMNT games took it to a whole new level. It really was like the arcade then.

Guys , i am looking for a NES game i played in my childhood. It was a 2D side scrolling game where the main character would spit out a brick or multiple brick on pressing a button. The main character would walk on those that bricks too. At the end of each level , a puzzle piece would be given to the player. All the puzzle piece would create a painting of some sort. Guys , i have watched many many youtube videos for all NES games but am still unable to find that game. Can someone pls pls pls help me. PS : sorry for my bad english.

Hideo Kojima didn't like Metal Gear on the NES. The MSX version was the proper verison. MSX was a popular computer platform in Japan despite it being made by Microsoft. The port could have been better with some really bad design faults that were not present in the MSX version.
