Tactics are not everything. Look at Capello, Erkisson...weren't they meant to be that?
Southgate provided the team spirit and so much more that other managers lack. No manager has every trait. And his progress in tournaments has proved that.
Then you say "but he had easy draws". I can't remember many occasions since 1986 that I been watching, where England ever had really rough draws and we still didn't progress far!
I think we are still over rating the players. They are good, but not that good. The foreign players around them week by week make them look better than they are. Southgate has done well with a good team of players, but not a fantastic set of players (like we had in Euro 96 and 2006).

Southgate provided the team spirit and so much more that other managers lack. No manager has every trait. And his progress in tournaments has proved that.
Then you say "but he had easy draws". I can't remember many occasions since 1986 that I been watching, where England ever had really rough draws and we still didn't progress far!

Solid defender, no surprises but when he took his biggest risk as a player, the penalty for England it failed. Thus he will never take a risk in a big match (go for it) because fear consumes him. He's hit his ceiling as a manger for England and he has to go after we get knocked out of Euro 2024 which we will guaranteed unless the players as a team take the risks that Gareth won't (basically ignore his tactics in game)

Game stats are quite even. England look weak at the back and when faced with the whole team defending looked out of ideas. Its an amazing squad full of superstars with a manager that doesn't know how to get the best out of them and still yet to beat any top International team.

Southgate will NEVER beat a team he shouldn't beat; he gets to where England should be, commensurate with their FIFA standing, but HE doesn't have what it takes to beat a France or an Argentina. Under him we will get to a tournament, get out of the group and reach the quarters/semis - or even the odd final - but WON'T WIN ANYTHING.
He should have been replaced after the last World Cup...and that's on the cr4ppy English FA: they'd rather a yes man, who looks/speaks good/well than a winner.

This goes back to a topic on another manager discussed on here earlier, Moyes. If you are not brave enough in employing the tactics and formations in a team with decent attacking ability and dont try to kill the game off against top opposition and sit back keeping games tight or defending narrow leads then you will inevitably become a cropper. Great teams win tournaments because their managers have the belief their attacking philosophy will ultimately lead them to glory. You need ro be nasty and ruthless when you play teams in latter stages of tournament football and England under Southgate simply do not have this trait. The FA should move heaven and earth in trying to land Eddie Howe. He's young, dynamic, knows how to make positive changes and effectually change systems inplay. Southgates a nice guy and we all know what they say about nice guys!

Not an England fan but that last point that Paul made about this being their best opportunity to win silverware really hit home. If England beat France in that WC QF last year, they probably go on to win it. Argentina you could argue aren't as good as France, or even Portugal or England. But they're more than the sum of their parts and were led by a determined Messi which I think ultimately got them over the line. England have the drop on most sides cause the depth they have is insane. Enough with the Maguire and Phillips nonsense. Get Tomori/Dunk and Ward-Prowse/Loftus Cheek into that setup and you'll see more resounding England performances against top opposition when it matters.

Walker, White, Stones, Shaw is supposed to be the best back four in international football. Declan Rice, Bellingham and Mount is supposed to be the best Midfield trio in international football. Saka, Kane, Rashford/Grealish/Sterling should be a front 3 winning you any tournament currently but Southgate has his paranoid tendencies kicking in while picking his team. England is at the strongest level they have ever been. They just don’t have a good tactician in charge of the team.

Southgate is a coward. Two golden chances for tournament success and he blew both due to his acceptance of 2nd or 3rd is success. It isn't. 1st place is the only success in football. Lack of in-game management, constant selection of the wrong players, lacklustre substitutions and over reliance on 'moments' from a crop of arguably the most talented players we've had in decades. The complete void of a killer instinct will be England's downfall again - SF / final loss after a run of set-piece goals, playing 6 at the back against a team ranked 100th in the world, a close game against a bang average team in the QFs and a nation taken for a ride for the 3rd time in 6 years. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. Southgate and any supporters of the man are insane.
