- In small babies, the response to hearing is of course difficult to notice. It could be a blinking or pause during feeds, a startle with loud noise. It is important to offer stimuli which produce sound without visual stimulation or vibration (like banging on the bed). Over time, response matures, and babies start localising sound in front first (4-6 months), to side by 6-7 months and vertically only by 8-9 months. Do review the hearing screen on your baby, and if concerns persist, better to do an ENT assessment before 2 months so we can diagnose hearing loss by 3 months (which is the target of newborn hearing screen).

Hello Dr., my baby boy is two month old on 14 Jan. His hearing test is normal. But he is responding to loud noises very late. Not quick startle response. When I ring bell near him when he is sleeping, after 1-2 sec he will move. Is this normal?? Thanks in advance.

Hello Dr. Sridhar, thank you for the informative video. I've subscribed to your channel. My baby was diagnosed with borderline unilateral ventriculomegaly (11 mm on the right) at 28 weeks gestation, but it resolved by the 35th week, and the baby was born in the 38th week, weighing 2.9 KG. The hearing test and red eye reflection were reported as passed. However, at 2 weeks of age, I noticed the baby isn't responding to louder noises and lacks a startle response. The baby only blinks eyes for very loud claps, and eyes aren't following objects even at a 4-inch distance. We're concerned if the resolved ventriculomegaly may indicate something more. Appreciate your insights.
If the rest of the baby’s response is normal, with normal head circumference, don’t panic. These are difficult to assess at this stage, give it 2-3 weeks and if still concerned, consider repeat ultrasound and hearing screen

Hello Doctor, my son is 3 months old. He startles to loud sounds even when sleeping. He babbles when he hears my voice. He even turn his head to sounds sometimes. And he is developing normally, smiles, laughs, does alot of sounds when we talk to him. But the Bera Test failed when he was 1.5 months old. Does it mean he has a hearing loss? Can a baby with hearing loss respond to sounds and startle to loud noises?

Even if one side is hearing, these reactions will be there. Try to repeat the test in 1-2 months to be sure

It depends on the room temperature. But face is never to be covered and if temperature over 20, hat not necessary

Since hearing test is normal, give it some time. Some babies show delayed maturation. And don’t keep testing, observe in natural settings spontaneously
@@SridharKs thank you sir, he is a nicu baby. That's why I am terrified. I was about to checked out his conductive hearing functions. Because his sensonural hearing is okay. He won't get calm by my voice behind himself. He keep looking at objects and things. Stare to roof and fan. But any sound wont make any difference in his behaviour. It is hard to decide based on this-if worried, get a hearing assessment. Sometimes, they get fluid in the ear related to reflux.

Hello Sir! My baby is 1 month old( delivered in 38 weeks). Hearing test at the time of discharge is positive. But sometimes she doesn't respond to sounds like ringing tones or door slam. Whereas, sometimes she responds with startle reflex or tightly closing the eyes. Also I did the rattle play on backside of both ears. Sometimes she give attention to sound and gently close the eyes as reponse , whereas there is no response in some trials. Also, she doesn't look to the direction of the sound. How to know if there is any hearing loss in both ears or in any of the ear. Should I wait for some days or weeks to observe the changes in my baby, if so how many days? Plz reply Sir
This is normal and looking to the direction occurs after a few months. If not responding consistently by 3-4 months, show the ENT doctor again

Unless very loud, should not cause long term damage. But repeated or prolonged exposure to loud noise is not advisable

@@SridharKs yes first time they did ABR at 8 months it came refer .....second time at 11 months they did bera it came positive results were normal ....they said to repeat it after 2 months but now in March results are negative.....don't know what to do....😔.....they to repeat it again at 18 months.....they suggested for implant surgery for left ear
@@aliwaris7364 How is the overall development? Hearing needs an intact brain to respond well, even if you do the implant. If there is significant learning difficulty, not sure if the implant alone will make a big difference

Response can happen with visual stimulus as well. If no response to sounds, better to get hearing checked

Hi doctor, my baby 5 months old reacts to various sounds and most of the time turns into the direction of the sounds but when I call her she doesn't respond. Other than that, she's perfectly developing with all milestones of her age what might be the reason.
You mean she doesn’t recognize her name? You can wait 3-4 more months as most babies associate names with objects by that stage. When you are playing, refer more by one name rather than using different pet names

Hello Doctor , i delivered boy baby on 16 th jan 2024..He was admitted in NICU on 24th jan for 10 days due to viral infection.. He is not responding to the sound even for loud noise when he is awake. We tested OAE it shows as pass, but still im worried why he is not responding to the loud noise. Do we need to do any other test or wait. How many months need to wait for the response?
Wait another month or two and if still worried, get ABR test, in some babies it’s more a delay in maturation, it will improve. Be patient.

If the repeat test is normal, nothing to worry. You can repeat anytime now
