Picking a new piano at Steinway
Step 0: Stop being poor
Step 1: Having money
Step 2 : Be rich
"step 0" 😭
As a piano enthusiast myself, I think this video is really helpful. Picking the right instrument is very important and it depends on your preferences. But I also doubt all pianists can waltz into a store and pick up a 9 foot concert grand considering they cost like 150k!
Respect for the Thumbnail. The Clickbait really got me. I was thinking: "No! she didn´t just bought a pink piano, or did she?
I went to a big used piano store in the UK and sat down and tested every single piano. The piano store were super friendly and relaxed and didn't mind me taking up time in the shop. I went in there for a baby grand or a grand but actually ended up buying a 1980s Ronisch upright piano because it spoke to me and I felt like we would be really good friends. The great thing about going to a used piano store is they have lots of different brands so you can get some idea of what you like. For example, I learned that I'm not a huge fan of Yamaha but I do like Kawai, because I prefer a more mellow rich sound. In the end I paid around 2700 GBP for my piano and my piano tuner (who is very experienced and a good pianist himself) really enjoys playing it. Sometimes a more expensive piano isn't always better! Your piano will be your companion potentially for the rest of your life and so you have to be able to speak to each other and be friends with each other.
Neues Video yayyy🎉🎉🎉
I bought a piano about 20 years ago, and I have to say, the advice in this video is quite solid. When I was shopping for pianos, I played Debussy's "The Sunken Cathedral" on every piano I tried out. I found it to be a good test piece since it has a large dynamic range which allows you to tell a lot about the character of the piano all at once. I arrived at a Boston GP-178 as my piano, and I have loved it ever since.
OMG ANNIQUE YOU ARE THE BESTT
YOU HAVE INSANE SKILL
AND YOUR SENSE OF HUMOR IS AMAZING!!!
ILYSMMMMM
Very informative! I was surprised at how quickly the client at the beginning was convinced to ditch her old piano. 😂
First
I love you Annique ☁✨
Love it that the concert is on my bday !! :D I got a new (old) piano recently and its my first piano ever! ive used digital ones before but hopefully one day I'll be able to own my own steinway grand. Yet another lovely video again Annique thank you!!

I'm sorry but "I can touch him in many different ways but" has me ROLLING💀💀💀
I'm piano shopping and this video taught me a bunch, thank you Annique!

Thankyou for this video. Very informative and helpful.
Very informative so bless ya for your commentary!
Great video! Very informative! I especially liked the “Piano Therapy” intro! So funny, it made me laugh! 😂 Ah Annique! You are so unique! Greetings and admiration from California! 🤩✌🏻🫶
This video came at the perfect time as I’m looking to buying a new piano 🎉
Brilliant intro, loved the double entendre
I LOVED the yellow Steinway you posted the other day that was a statement
There was a time when I thought that Steinway was the reference piano that every other piano was measured by. Then I heard a Bösendorfer one day and I was very impressed. I love the dynamic range and how warm these pianos sound. If I had the space and the money I would love to own one
@shackamaxon512 Yes, exactly! Lots of people think Steinway is THE piano and honestly I don’t like them so much. They’re too brilliant for my taste. Then I heard a Shigeru Kawai and I loved it at first sight. Now I‘m lucky and own my personal Kawai grand. I enjoy every second playing on it. I recommend everybody to look for their model in their financial range. Everything else would make an unhappy pianist hating practicing. Isn’t music all about joy?!
By the way, a tip for everybody tight on money: I bought a grand in a wood finish which was amazingly cheap because it’s not black. The color is not important for me, the tone is. I went to a good piano retailer, who sells new and used pianos and takes care for the instruments. With a different color and maybe used instrument you can save a lot of money and might find your instrument earlier than in your dreams.
Same to me: the day i played on a Bösendorfer the first time, I got lost! Travelled to Vienna to search out one of 4 "identical" CS200.
I agree with you but Blüthner is very good to.
@@geroelze7566 Oh yeah! I love the old Blüthner. They’re so warm and balanced. But they’re difficult to get.
Sadly for my budget, I can only afford the Lego Piano :'(
these comic moments are so funny
i may not be a pianist, but i still found this entertaining
So infatuated with this beauty.
Very helpful video
A good tip/trick for choosing a piano like that.... Is to be heartstoppingly rich first.
I am in favor of playing all piano literature - from Bach and Mozart to Prokofiev and Shostakovich. I think that the ideal musician should be able to be different, multifaceted! I don't mean that he should be reincarnated. I mean that a musician should be able to find a particle of himself in any musical style and in the music of any brilliant composer. When I play Prokofiev, at that moment it seems to me that this is my favorite composer. It's the same with Mozart, for example... That's why I don't know how you can have one or two favorite composers
I wish you make more talk video like this that are easy and fun to watch.
that was a great op10 no4
Thank you! :)
I love your shirt! May I ask where you bought it from?
Ausgezeichnet!
everyone like this if you wanna see her try a 1 hour, 10 min, 1 min challenge of animenz' kawaki wo ameku. It's my absolute favorite piece on piano so it would be awesome. It is quite a challenging piece tho.
I hope someday Ican buy a piano like that :D
A wealth of helpful advice, bravo! I picked a rather ordinary (new) Schimmel piano out of 10 similar ones, and we've been together since 38 years now. Do I miss a grand piano? I once played a Baldwin grand that was as phenomenal as unobtainable. Steinways do not speak to me. But even if I would find a decent Bechstein or Ibach baby grand, I will never part with my Schimmel. The "perfect" piano will talk to you, just listen carefully.
Hi Annique!
I’d LOVE to have a Steinway grand (even the little one) but…I have neither the bling ($$$) to buy one or the place to put it were i to purchase one :(
What do you think about e-piano?? Please make a video about it 😊😊
I can speak from my own experience. Recently I was visiting a friend of mine and decided to play her chic electric piano. The sound really struck me - it listens live chic, it sounds rich. But I make video recordings and after I recorded a little on it, I realized that the electric piano does not sound very profitable on the recording. The uppers on the recording sound squeaky, although there was no such impression live. And this despite the fact that the recording device I have is very high quality! Conclusion: live instruments sound better on recordings
I don’t think people realize that when you trade in your Boston for a Steinway, you are given the full purchase price of the Boston towards the price of the Steinway.
I Cannot find the video which you visit the showroom with pink, green… pianos. It’s gorgeous ❤
Do you have the cramptés?
Since your style is light have you thought about aquiring a European tradition pianos such as Bosendorfer or Bechstein (you don't have to tell S hehehe) . New Steinways tend to have heavy action especially it will take over a year to get them to loosen up, that's a significant impact on your practice time. If you really like the opaque saturated Steinway sound, you should probably get a used one that is already broken in but not so old. Piano have definitively gotten too heavy and don't produce the long tone without those clanking stomp sound from the hammers. If i could buy the piano of my dream it would be a new piano built like a 19th century piano !
What a coinisidence, I am literally about to buy a new piano, thanks for the tip, but I m still not so sure what piano model or from what company I should buy? Maybe u can make another guide but about from which company's piano u should buy?
She is sponsored by Boston, so that kind of video will probably not happen. But there are several good channels from music stores on TH-cam 🙂
Honestly there are so many good brands out there and as every piano is different because of the nature of wood material its difficult to say you should go only with one specific brand. However, if you take one of the most famous brands you can be sure you will get quality. As I am under a contract with Steinway as Boston Ambassador I can’t make a video comparing different brands without being fully objective - but I can do a video showing the differences of the brands of the Steinway family - Essex, Boston and Steinway - would that be interesting to you?
@@heartofthekeys yes
Steingraeber
@@heartofthekeyswould love to see a comparison between Boston and Steinway
can you do a one minute 10 minute 1 hour on rachmaninovs op 32 no 5? i think it would be fun
Yamaha Electone! Who needs an orchestra ?! Be the orchestra
please try to play the Spanish fantasy F.Liszt
they told me "your first impression is usually correct" .. and after having the priviledge of having tried 7 (!) different piano's in a row, my first impression of number "4" was the best, my family members independenty from each other also had 4 as their favorite. goes to show that the first "aha" moment is so important!
Funny when you talk of the piano as "him." To me my piano is always "her"!
What's that Chopin piece played around the 2nd minute of the video called, please?
Op 25 no 1?
@@_colestrong thank you
Please play pirates of the caribbean ❤☺
you have bought a new piano just a couple of months ago ahahhaah lol this is getting vicious xD
i wish i saw this video earlier
Did you name your LEGO piano "America"? I mean it does go from "C" to shining "C".
If its a new Steinway leave you wont find it. If its a last century model that was restored to original condition, then you will find it. The parlor model was the best ever made. (6' 4") was the best model ever made. 73
PS must have the original sound board. Wood gets better as it ages. 73
The previous piano was like 2 years old 😅
I love how your fans aren't picking up the sexual innuendo.😆
My midi controller is looking at me like😢🥺
Ein Flügel wäre was Tolles…
Talk with, not to, your piano tuner. Ask how good they are at "voicing". When Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli (ABM) had to play in Carnegie Hall (about 2,000 seats and with that a lot larger than large European concert halls), he was afraid that all the posh ladies with fur coats and hats and their hubbies in MTO suits would suck the brilliance or sparkle out of his tone. In preparation, he ordered his tuner to make the piano sharper. When he returned to test it in an otherwise empty hall: it's not sharp enough, he said to the tuner, who went at it another time. This may have repeated two or three times. ABM played the concert. Next day, the reviewer in one of the US's leading newspapers (like WP or NYT) had his review published: "ABM played beautifully, but his piano sounded awfully sharp."
Before voicing, pianos are all different and then the factory spends many hours to voice them.
Listen to a piano in a large room and it will sound different in your smaller room at home.
After a couple years, max, the voicing has changed, but so gradual that you don't hear it objectively. Your brain remembers what it sounded like when you started with the piano.
And, yes, tuning aside, a very good tuner can also adjust the voicing (which is done by working the felt on the hammers).
If I had a good relationship with the piano factory, I would ask them to take a standard Renner action that has been equalised in touch, nothing else, and let me play that action in different instruments. Assuming the tuning was done optimally and not influenced by the action (not enough for me to hear it).
I might also want to hear these instruments tuned to A=432 Hz.
Very true. Most piano technicians can tune a piano but rather few can voice it well.
*Me smashing the keys because I'm frustrated*
Annique: That's not proper piano playing and you should never treat an instrument like that 😐
I am glad you seem to follow my advice wearing beautiful fabric with a feminine touch again and not those high school kid t-shirts which are kool at that age and unisex, but not for your age. Also you picked the right album cover i suggested. And least not last (yeah a swapped that) you read my comment about you needing a piano upgrade from steinway. I start to think i have some influence on you😆 ! I am well meaning so you should.
Dear Annique, please consider making your videos without background music. It detracts from the video. You speak quickly and energetically, and the additional music, (not particularly pleasant, in my opinion,) makes for sensory overload!
That intro was out of pocket 💀
Hilarious sketch. Stop playing, set fire to the piano, and become a comedienne.
That wasn't helpful: I need a player piano. 😁 I guess Steinway does not make one.
Yes, they do. They call it their "Spirio" system. It is really remarkable. It will not only play, but it also records. A pianist can record something on it, and then it will play it back exactly as the pianist played it. Also, it connects to the internet. The world's great pianists can play a recital on a Steinway Spirio anywhere in the world, broadcast it over the internet, and anybody with a Steinway Spirio can hear it on their own piano. Here is a link to a Spirio demonstration by Yuja Wang. th-cam.com/video/2o18PmkG3w4/w-d-xo.htmlsi=jThYv-EHGr8QhTss I own a Steinway concert grand with a Spirio system, and it is a wonderful instrument.
i love your videos but pls dont use ai voices in your intros again .
