I have been tailoring my coats and blazers for about 50 years. I love the process. Your video taught me a few new techniques. Thank you for doing this.
I just found your channel and I could not be more thrilled. For the past maybe six years I have not sewn anything after having sewn for probably thirty years. I have been so afraid to begin again because I am so unsure of myself. You have inspired me to want to take that step! Your videos are so well shot with the close up shots that are so concise and clear. Today, I plan on opening my cabinet full of stored fabric and choose something to sew. I hope to find something that resembles one of the things that you have made. Thank you so much for this channel!
This is an excellent video…..so informative and lots of great tips put over so well without the showing off and bad language we get from so many of the TH-cam sewists. Thank you! 😊
This is the first time I've watched anything making a coat before the skill and workmanship which goes into making a coat is truly remarkable you make it look so easy
The coat is so well crafted that I don’t think it needed top stitching on the lapels. I’m pleased you didn’t insert shoulder pads. And I think that if you wear a coat unbelted, it looks better with a bit of length. It’s beautiful. I’ll consider making this one myself. Thank you.
I am so glad you mentioned the top stitching! From start to finish, I debated adding that detail in. I don’t always love the look of topstitching but in the end, I decided to stick to the pattern as closely as possible. If I make another, I may skip it. ✨😁
This was months of work. MONTHS! It was so inspiring to watch you push through this project and deliver something so beautiful. The coat looks amazing on you!
It will take months if you sew a few hours on weekends and go slow because you unfamiliar with what you’re doing. Once you are you could make it over just one weekend. I’m not a tailor but I’ve made a few coats in the past and it probably took me a total of 20 hours, no more. The things that will slow it down are if your are self drafting/modifying a pattern, making a practice garment, or making a more complex coat.
I have a different but similar style coat cut out but I stopped due to lack of confidence with the pockets specifically. You have no idea how helpful these videos are for those of us who are newer to sewing. Thank you so much for the time and effort. Much appreciated.
I agree with this post. I have a similar pattern and similar issues on making it and I’m grateful for this video. It has boosted my confidence and I will try my pattern with this video. Thank you.
THANK YOU for your advice to shrink the wool fabric before cutting out!! I’m not sure I would have thought to do this. When I steamed the wool before fusing the interfacing, I actually saw it shrink quite a bit before my eyes! Your video is excellent; I’m at the early stages of my coat and I will be referring to your instructions and advice the whole way.
This popped up on my phone this morning! How did Apple know I am beginning a wool coat for the TomKat Stitchery Precious Fabric Sew 2024?? I’ve had a chunk of Pendleton wool for 30 years that I’m cutting into finally. I’ve made several tailored coats and blazers before and enjoy each step of the process. I found that hand tacking with thread was a great way to mark and bound buttonholes and hand stitched ones were a new lesson for me. I’m in my 70’s and love to learn! Thank you for your coat journey and it was a peaceful morning watching along today.
This is a lovely video. I have not sewn for 6 years also, I sewed nice pencil skirts, fitted, with silk lining and jackets. So I love seeing the systematic care that’s needed to do the construction properly, love seeing the use of equipment I have too. It’s such a lazy pleasure to watch. Thank you.
I just got a pattern, fabric, etc to make my first coat and I am so glad I found this video!!! Watching you go through all the steps is so helpful and gives me a lot more confidence to give it a go. It was definitely good to see how much time and care can go into each step and that not rushing is worth it, your coat is BEAUTIFUL!
That was an amazing video on how to make the Bella coat. The process you show on sewing and pressing a coat together, would work for most coat sewing. The music you used I found so relaxing while watching your techniques on coat making. I’ve been sewing for many years, I used to work in a tailors. I’ve made myself a jacket years ago but haven’t sewn a coat. I really think I’ll have a go after watching your very helpful tutorial. Thank you I really enjoyed it. ❤
Wow, the love and care you put into this coat is just amazing. I wish I had some of your patience. Wonderful job and so inspiring. Someday....maybe....Awesome video.
I just finished the Traveller Coat for my daughter. I was very happy to have found your video, it made the tricky part of the written instructions that much easier to follow. Thank you! I am very happy with the result and had a lot of fun with the tailoring techniques in this excellent Bella Loves Patterns pattern. Jessica
Thanks so much for sharing this process! I want to make myself a trench coat, but I was doubting myself because it's hard to know where to start! I will watch your video as I sew mine to get it done together step by step. I love your channel! Hugs from Mexico!
Wonderful, thank you so much. I really enjoyed watching you make your coat, and showing all the intricate details that cause worry! Brilliant tutorial, and once again thanks.
Thank you SO MUCH for this video! I can't believe how beautiful my Traveller Coat turned out, in large part because your video got me through many of the tricky parts.
Wow, you made it look somewhat easyin some places. I have gotten everything I needed to make a wool coat and wanted to see other people on TH-cam before I started. So glad I did, I have saved your video to keep watching over and over. So far I have watched2 times. I am doing a very similar coat. Thank you for doing all that work and giving some great insight!
Fabulous coat and attention to process! I am planning to make (a) coat(s), two of which have back yokes with forward shoulders and no lining patterns! I watched your video for inspiration and to help me think through my process and what I need to do. I can’t say I am totally there yet, but I am closer. You did a wonderful job, and your coat looks very professional. Thanks for putting this out here 😊
Absolutely beautiful, oh how I wish I had watched this video before I made my coat! Will definitely use all this information for my next coat though, thanks so much for sharing.
If you could have bought in time, so call horsehair this is miraculous in effect. But then your whole coat is lined. My son bought a good wool suit mailed from usa, rolled up like a football, it arrived, shook it out and it was fine. Because it had proper interfacing. The non fusibles are brilliant.
What a fantastic well presented tutorial. I learned a lot and appreciate your detailed showing of the process in all its little steps. Very professional, very structured. And a perfect outcome. It gives me motivation to do my own sewing projects . So, thank you very much for your time and effort you put into the show and also into the reflections. As well as in the lighting, so older folks like me can see better. Greetings from Germany.
Wow, your coat is beautiful and you are now rocking a custom coat! I too live in CA and would love to wear a coat such as this! I do not sew at all but I am always amazed at the skill involved in making clothes. Congratulations!
Epic make and epic commentary/notes/explanations. I may actually feel brave enough now to finally make one of the dozen coat patterns I own but have been too afraid to try. Thank you.
I really enjoy watching you put a garment together. So detailed, so very skilled at what you do. Quite relaxing and encourages me to take on a project. Thank you!😊
just few mins int and I already love the video and how many details you're adding. I have 2 kind of wool ready for this pattern but I cannot find the time and to begin this project, I know It will take time. Also, I'm still not 100% sure which fabric I want to use first. I traced the pattern during Christmas period at least. Interesting comments about the walking foot. do you think the IDT system on a PFAFF machine (if you happen to know it already) would work fine enough? it's not strong as a walking foot but it's a tiny help at least. Thansk for sharing this video!😊
I miss my mom so much she was the fairy with magical hands in sowing she was able to sow a coat in under 3 hours 3 dresses for X-mas in an afternoon in velvet and laces do the entire houses curtains in no time... bed covers, pants etc... and the way people nowadays sow is so weird to me cause my mom didn't sow with patterns, she'd take your measurement and do your clothing and fix them on to you like a tailor and 1 hour later... Tadam! skirt and blouse or coat done... as easy as 1,2,3. and why isn't anyone OVERLOCKING their fabrics edges anymore???
Hi Cleo! From Brazil I send you My congratulations! Well done!!!! It is really hard to sew a coat, and you were brilliant! Here we do our own patterns but I liked very much the idea of ordering them and get ready to cut and sew. I’ look for the tools you recomended, I think they are pretty much usable! Thanks again for sharing your goal with us!
I’m dependent on this brilliant video, some of the pattern’s instructions are confusing to say the least. I’ve not yet finished but just wanted to say thanks!
I love it! It is incredible. Stitch quality is amazing and reliable. Every time I think I want to downsize to one machine (multipurpose Bernina) I sew just a few stitches on the Juki and I decide I will never get rid of it! 😄💜
This is an amazing video. I learned a lot about marking the fabric. Are the tailoring steps you took included in the pattern instructions, e.g. bias tape? Thanks so much for taking the time to make this video.
Great video! Thank you! I am preparing to make my first doublesided fabric coat. One side is checkered and the other is splid colour...it is going to be quite a bite. I have a question about your Juki machine..what is that accessories box behind it? Did you get it with it? I have bernette by Bernina. I didn't have a walking foot and, as you said, it is way too expencive, so I bougt one on ali express for about 15$ and it works perfectly. My machine is 13 years old now and I would like to change it for Juki as it really has the best reviews
Great question! The accessories box came with my Bernina machine, not the Juki sadly. I have looked at some different options on Etsy for Juki feet and bobbins but I end up just tossing them in a drawer. 😂✨
I love this, will give it a try. Need to find out where to find out where to purchase the wool in Canada. would you mind sharing what bring is the black crossbody bag you wear when showing the coat?

Hi, Cleo! Thanks so much for sharing the process! You did such an amazing job! I will definitely follow your video for instructions! Just one question: what were your actual bust & waist measurements? I’m having a hard time choosing the right size. In the real size measurements I’m size 14. I’m thinking about choosing a 10 or a 12 in the finished garment measurement but I’m not sure yet.
Great question! My measurements can fluctuate so at that time they were closer to 36 bust and about 30 waist. I know my shape tends to be pear shaped, smaller on top, so I skewed towards that. I hope this helps, my memory is a bit foggy on the actual numbers now! 😅💜
That was the same with me….I got very confused at that part attaching the lining to the vent …it was a different pattern to yours but it had a similar vent……
Yes! The dress I am wearing at the beginning of the video is the Lyra shirtdress by Tilly and the Buttons. I do have a quick sew along for it. One of my first videos so it's a bit different, but all the details are in the description! ✨
Are you not using your Bernina anymore. Can you please make a video comparison between your new juki vs your bernina. I have a Bernina and I wanted to upgrade to juki. Is it worth it? Please please advise. ❤
Oh, I still use both. I love them both so much and could not recommend one over the other! 😆Which Juki were you thinking about? My Juki is my heavy duty, mechanical machine. The Bernina is my computerized machine. I plan to keep both! ✨💜
Im thinking to get a Juki ddl5550n. Same like ddl 8700 but made in Japan. Or ddl7000a. Imso confused right now. I love my bernina, but i have this fascination with the sound of industrial machine😂 can you please do a review with your sewing machines for comparison❤
😂 Yes I think I might be able to make a comparison video-your request might actually help me move past my current pants video in the works, which is a real struggle right now. 😅 It may not be in time for you to make your decision, though!

Such a great point! I did consider it so it was more of a cost savings decision to not dry clean. 😆
Do you have horse hair canvas? I just did not hear you mention it thats all.
Great question! I went with the pattern instructions as written for this project so didn't try horse hair canvas. It is on my list to try, though! ✨
