Ever since I found out about Obsidian my life has changed so much, for the better. I am now able to actually make notes and review them. The more I learn about plug-ins, the more I feel comfy using it. Thanks a lot.
I was holding onto understanding obsidian as a core tool and never installed any third party plugins but today after feeling confident went ahead and incorporated calendar, advanced tables, note refactor, editor syntax highlight, copy button for code blocks for better workflow.
@@linkingyourthinking I have my overall knowledge management system in place and feels like a good point to customising the css from scratch and creating my own theme. Your Cybertron and Reviere by Santi are my references. So thanks in advance.
No matter how good a dev is, and the obsidian devs are superb, they cannot anticipate all the use cases of their user base. That's where plugins come in. They allow creative individuals in the community to translate their workflow into tools that others can incorporate into their own. Love your picks! I have my own favorites and this inspired me to share mine :)
The Obsidian devs created a platform with some basic functionality, in that it’s sort of like Microsoft Excel and how extensible and flexible it can be for unplanned use-cases. Yesterday I evaluated all (some dismissing based on descriptions from main browser) 794 plugins listed as of the time I post this, selected 44 for further consideration, as there are some overlaps. Then again, some that may not do every last thing I want, I may derive from them and make my own functionality, using them for pre-existing code or just as n example of how to do things (having looked at the APIs, there is only so much that won’t be identical in code). I’ve not mucked around with JavaScript in any meaningful way before now, but between my most-used Windows debugger being scripted with JavaScript, and now this, well…
Ward Cunningham is quite famous in the programming community. He has invented or made popular a few small things that most of us might have heard of such as the first wiki, agile software development (via extreme programming back in the day and the Agile Manifesto), many design patterns and paper-based designed tools such as CRC cards (before the advent of digital tools) and popularized many object-oriented programming due to his long association with Small Talk.
This is great! i am always in awe by this amazingly talented people creating super useful and great looking plug-ins for the community. Love it! having a blast setting up Obsidian haha btw finding out that it is a pretty new app is pretty mindblowing to me. Yet another great video - thanks!
Hi Nick! Thank you for this great video and all your amazing work! There's a little plugin I found recently which saves me a couple of seconds every time I make a new note, which when added up it's much more significant. It's called "Page heading from links", and what it does is insert a H1 heading from the filename, so I don't have to copy-paste every time. :)
thanks I was looking for this, as I move from Typora, which already has this feature although the other way: from headline to file name. but this is very handy

Great content, it’s going to be very helpful, thanks a lot! Just a small tip: adding a URL to selected text already has its predefined hotkey throughout macOS and it’s cmd+K. It works almost everywhere, a real timesaver!
Your video is a really great help to me. Though the plugin only does little things, but these little things are what I do repeatedly everyday and thus really saves me a lot of time. Thanks for taking the time and effort to make this useful tutorial. I will recommend this to anyone who wants to be "a little quicker" in using Obsidian.
I just find out that Hotkeys++ plugin, Cmd+shift+M to toggle through bulleted list work only on single line. In video I can see it works on multiple lines. Is it no longer support multiple line operation or just me... Please help thanks.
I'm hearing that a lot lately. I know Emacs is a powerhouse and is out of my league, but it's good to know that something like Obsidian is slowly interesting power users
@@linkingyourthinking Emacs is one of those all in one tools (generally for programmers) that does everything for them. Sort of centralized command center. There is a very long history of plugins for it and orgmode (as well as literate programming and markdown) have been in it for many many years. You should add some Emacs concepts to your own Zettelkasten :P Maybe along with some VIM concepts and the entire Do One Thing and Do It Well concept that fits with the Single Concept in a Note philosophy.
Honestly the best tutorials for obsidian out there. Thanks so much! Is there any way to use different community plugins on my phone than on my pc? Some of the plugins that work great on my computer don't work great on my phone so I wanted to use different plugins for each one.

Thanks a lot. Is there also a way to recreate "wiki boards" (not sure how to call them) similar to what you can do in Notion? I mean having an overview with different columns, like health, spirituality, relationships, business etc and subtopics underneath each of those pillars that then lead to an overview of all notes in that particular subtopic.

I don't have a strong Daily Notes philosophy (I use it as a catch-all and often use "Note Refactor" to split out sections as they grow into something that should stand on its own), but I do love having my three hotkeys set up to fly through them. I'm excited to use plugins more on Obsidian, but I'm a little leery of the broad security hole this leaves in my system. Do you bother with this side of things or is community-verification of the plugins satisfactory for you? (loved these Obsidian videos btw!)
It’s good to be leery. Great question! I currently see community-verification as something I’m really confident in. At least as Obsidian’s community exists right now; I can’t speak for the future. People on there are the types of people who find security holes and report them. So I’m currently confident in the self-governing I see, but when in doubt, wait for more downloads by more intrepid users first.
How did you get your #Calendar MOC set up the way it is in your LYT Kit? I assume you did not manually input all of that data? Any tools you could point a windows user to? This would be huge for my work aspect of life as we work on a period to period / week to week system.
Haha, I did the majority manually, but there are better ways. I don't even use the Calendar MOC, it was just to show what's possible. Use the plugin by Liam called "Calendar"

I am a huge believer in synchronicity..I was playing around in the community plug ins and noted all the plugin ins I was interested in, and of course you reviewed them all. I am very very new to Obsidian but there is something very intuitive about it, and I want to learn as much as I can so I can make it even more useful. Do you have a video on templates? Also, I am curious..do you have one vault for EVERYTHING? Or do you create different vaults for different things? For instance, I currently have a vault for teaching, and it contains all the courses I teach. I have another for my dissertation. But it occurs to me that there is some overlap with at least one class I teach and the subject of my research.
No video on templates, but we've had some special sessions on templates and shared best practices in the workshop. RE # of vaults: I have a few, but it's best to just start with one for a long time. When possible it's better to keep it together
The default command is ctrl/cmd + v. But you can customize your command in the Hotkeys settings. Also check the Community plugin settings if you’ve enabled the plugin already.
I am hoping someone can direct me to a "How to use plug-ins", for dummies apparently...I have successfully installed sliding panes and turned it on. However, the "instructions" I find are not very helpful. I cannot figure out how to actually use the feature. Can anyone give guidance or point me to a resource? Thanks in advance!

This would be huge for my work aspect of life as we work on a period to period / week to week system.
Haha, I did the majority manually, but there are better ways. I don't even use the Calendar MOC, it was just to show what's possible. Use the plugin by Liam called "Calendar"

YOu have to enable the Command Palette as a core plugin - if you're at all like me and didn't realize that, lol

@@linkingyourthinking I created a new vault to test that and you're right - it does look like it's on by default. I must have turned it off when I was looking at some of the other settings at some point. In any case, it's on now ;-) Thanks!

I am a huge believer in synchronicity..I was playing around in the community plug ins and noted all the plugin ins I was interested in, and of course you reviewed them all. I am very very new to Obsidian but there is something very intuitive about it, and I want to learn as much as I can so I can make it even more useful. Do you have a video on templates? Also, I am curious..do you have one vault for EVERYTHING? Or do you create different vaults for different things? For instance, I currently have a vault for teaching, and it contains all the courses I teach. I have another for my dissertation. But it occurs to me that there is some overlap with at least one class I teach and the subject of my research.
No video on templates, but we've had some special sessions on templates and shared best practices in the workshop.
RE # of vaults: I have a few, but it's best to just start with one for a long time. When possible it's better to keep it together

The default command is ctrl/cmd + v. But you can customize your command in the Hotkeys settings. Also check the Community plugin settings if you’ve enabled the plugin already.
I am hoping someone can direct me to a "How to use plug-ins", for dummies apparently...I have successfully installed sliding panes and turned it on. However, the "instructions" I find are not very helpful. I cannot figure out how to actually use the feature. Can anyone give guidance or point me to a resource? Thanks in advance!
Hi, how can i reorder Folders?, when i click on "change order", it only change the order of NOTES, but, not for FOLDERS
Adding emojis or numbers to your folder name is a common way to bring preferred order to your folder structure.
