In response to Mr. Fradd’s request at the end of the video, I have personally been encouraged and entertained by Dr. Harrelson. I’ve watched the entirety of every video he has ever posted and thoroughly enjoyed every minute of them. I hope and pray blessings on him, and that he continues with both of his channels, that I may continue to learn from him and enjoy his presence through TH-cam.

Dr. Harrelson is a very relatable and charismatic force for good. His authentic witness to the Catholic Church from a Southern perspective is enriching to me as a lifelong Catholic and Southerner. I have deeply admired his work ever since his appearance on Pints With Aquinas, where I otherwise would never have been introduced to his work if he hadn’t been a guest on Matt’s show.

Gentlemen, thank you for an absolutely sublime conversation. As an old guy myself, 65 years of living by God's grace and 42 years of marital bliss with my junior high sweetheart, I have to say that it warms the cockles of my heart to hear that there are still young men that understand the counsel of the old. I grew up with old friends and I've lived to reap the benefit of their advice. This understanding is something so rare today, and the world will suffer for its loss.

I love the company of those older than me. I am 22 myself, and enjoy talking about life and society with my 86-year-old neighbor. She has a wonderful mind! My best friends are also 9-20 years older than me-they are some men from my parish and we have a prayer group together. :)

Dr. Harrelson, I remember the days before the internet. I lived in a community where everyone participated in the life of the plantation camp (pineapple plantation in Hawaii) and the life of the Church. We learned from our elders and never disrespected them. We learned how to grow vegetables, fish, hunt, build. Playtime consisted of exploring mountains and reading. But, without current technology (despite how much we hate it) we would not have you, whose ideas many of us ponder over and enjoy.

Dr. Alan, I understand and share your feelings about the Internet. But I’m sitting here watching you and Matt doing a show over the Internet, ON the Internet, and I believe without the Internet, you and Matt probably would have never met. So I come back to the old saying, “everything in moderation” which includes the Internet. Please never feel the pressure to create content on a regular schedule. I like that you create content only when you have something to say, and then maybe disappear for a while. That seems like a healthy way to go. I’d love to get to know my neighbors, and I was starting to when I first moved into this neighborhood in San Antonio Texas three years ago, but it seems that the neighbors, although I know most of their names, just don’t seem interested in visiting like they did when I was a 1970s kid growing up in southern California. Like Matt said, the Internet is a better place with you on it. If good people like you leave the Internet, the Internet will suck even worse than it does now.
    Many blessings,
    Armen the Armenian Catholic piper

I am a millennial raised in a globalist, multi ethnic, multi cultural, neoliberal, postmodern household. But I have managed to overcome apathy, nihilism, and atheism in part due to the ability to seek true intellectual and spiritual guidance in the eclectic yet convergent dialogue found on youtube. Your audience is not just passively hearing you, we are listening to excellent conversations that exemplify brotherly fellowship which transcends the propositional content. I recognize the anguish of willingly engaging in existential hypocrisy by utilizing social media as a means to share your vocation. In a sense we all must do that when we deal with electronic cashiers at the grocery store, or use air travel. I’m not sure what to do about that but I will say that I recognize your sacrifice, and thank you for carrying that particular cross.

Dr Harrelson, your desire to “have more Jesus” has been an inspiration. And I love how you love wisdom and friendship. People need to hear that and be encouraged by that. Bishop Robert Barron says the Apostle Paul used the “cutting edge communication of his time, which was letters on parchment delivered by means of the Roman roads….He got on boats..he spoke…he wrote…”. If Paul were here today would he use the new media? Of course, because he wanted the whole world to know that Jesus Christ is Lord.

Alan, I am a Catholic Gentleman from Hendersonville NC (I believe you'd mentioned your grandparents are from here during one of your livestreams?) and listened to your conversation with Matt whilst dropping off my 4 month old son with the babysitter and the Golden Doodle at doggy daycare this morning. I just want you to know my reaction to this video was no different from every other video that I have the privilege of watching that you post - your sincere, calm, collected, insightful, and illuminating discussions around all things pipe related, the faith in our Blessed Lord, and living a simple life amongst family and friends in cooperation with nature always adds just that little pep in my step and lightness of heart that makes all the difference when one begins the day's work. Make no mistake, no matter how long you decide to make TH-cam videos, rest assured the positive externalities of your elucidations upon the pipe, family, faith, history, prayer, and living a life of virtue with a warm heart csn never be understated. The value you add to the TH-cam community is qualitatively different and unique that we all appreciate and look forward to every time you post another video. I am positively gleeful when I see another Dr. Alan Harrelson video posted! God bless you and God love you.

I initially began listening to the Pipe Cottage because I was a beginner pipe smoker, and I was hoping for advice. I have stayed for the content, even the non-pipe content. I have learned many things just listening to Dr. Harrelson. My “go-to” content while driving to work and back had been The Ricky Gervais Show. Not anymore, although I do still listen to Karl’s insanities once in a while 😂
I was born and raised in Brussels, Belgium, and baptized a Roman Catholic. I have never practiced my faith as an adult, with the exception of a handful of masses. My parents were very private in their beliefs and never spoke about them. The Pipe Cottage has started me on my journey back to Catholicism.

Alan, it is quite refreshing to hear your perspective on the range of matters discussed here. As an older piper and member of society, I am in agreement with your assessment of the depreciated status of matters. The real travesty is that, on the whole, we have lost much intellectuality. The willingness to respect or revere the value of history is yet another casualty of the depersonalization, or perhaps call it, technology induced ignorance that has overtaken the masses. And yes, I too believe those YTPC factions that are in this for the money have unfortunately lost their way.

In Austria, high quality Pipes, (especially Peterson,) are sold in every town. Even a small little tobacco store on the side of the road will have a selection of aged tobacco. Tobacco cost about 1 dollar more than a pack of cigarettes. I am from America but live in both places. I took up pipe smoking in Austria, there is much more of it there. I went back to America for a little while, walked in a pipe store and was shocked at the prices. 34 dollars I paid for three nuns, 24 dollars for Early Morning Pipe. I now order online when in America which did bring it down a lot. Austria might even be the Pipe smoking capital of the world, it seems that way. Although I could be wrong. It just seems that every single place I went to sold high quality pipes and pipe tobacco. In America, I have to drive one hour or order online to get a tin of EMP. About the pot smoking discussion: I used to feel the way you feel but I would be very open minded to it when it comes to being used as medicine and even used in other situation amongst friends. It's not all, "stoner," culture. It is not like being drunk, if you don't use so much that you are, "stoned," what will happen is your mind can figure out certain things it might not have before. For me, I use CBD as medicine, (This being over big Pharma, it has a low dose of THC and is legal,) but the THC is enough that I was able to figure out some geometry that is fairly mind blowing that I've yet to see on any TH-cam video. Some things about the new are good, it can be about the setting. I wouldn't judge the thing without experience with it. Because once used as medicine it becomes very obvious why it's illegal in most places. Because it becomes very obvious that you wouldn't need big Pharma for quite a few prescription drugs. This actually caused me to be angry at myself having the opinions I had without ever trying it. I would say, if there is a situation where you can try it for medicine you should try it and understand what the thing is. The last thing I'll say about the conversation; While I do believe faith without works is dead as the scripture say, you made the comment that you have to work for salvation. I don't see anyway you can get that out of the scripture. You can work all day and all night and it won't be enough for salvation. I also wouldn't marvel over intellectuals in the Catholic Church. As God takes the foolish things to confound the wise and I have personally witnessed it. If one makes too much of an idol out of this, they will miss out on the real thing. As the Jews did with tradition. Although, I like deep, intellectual conversation about the scriptures as well. Yet, if a homeless man with no education approaches me, I will bend my ear his way if he speaks in the name of the Lord and I will search the scriptures to see if these things are true. When it comes to things in our new age, I do not think the way is to go back to the old things completely but to take the old and new. The Pipe, unlike cigarettes teaches you to be responsible and to be a man as you only get the Pipe when responsibilities have been taken care of. At least for me, I do not smoke a pipe all day. Once the day is over. If one is lazy and takes all day to do everything, one doesn't get the Pipe at night. The Pipe is even a teaching tool on becoming a real man. But I had this realization while on a small amount of THC. I myself am trying to become much less opinionated on things I know nothing about. As not that long ago I would have said," Can't stand pot smoking." It works so well as medicine that it makes me think maybe the whole stoner culture is a psyop so people will keep taking pain pills from their doctor and get addicted, when they could have something completely natural and safe and it will take away pain even better.

Regarding the content of the Pipe Cottage videos and Pipe Cottage Social, I thoroughly enjoy and recommend it. The community is wholesome and your description of it being of a Catholic neighborhood is accurate. There's a level of connectivity existing there that is unfortunately found in fewer places around the United States of America. It does encourage developing that type of connective community in the real world. Using myself as an example, I have always been suspicious of internet technology, it's rapid advancement, and blind wholesale adoption by a majority of people. They come to rely upon it while disregarding the fragility of it and their addiction. If it ended suddenly and without warning they would be devastated. I and my young family would be just fine, although the children would have to adjust to doing homeschooling on paper instead of using their accustomed internet tools. Thank you, wholeheartedly, for this content; and as much as I sympathize with you about the nuisance of it all please know that the Lord is using you as He sees fit, and the effect is measurable. Keep your socks dry. Good day and God Bless.

I enjoy marijuana on occasion. I used to smoke it every day and I stopped because I also do not like the culture that surrounds marijuana. Some of the worst people in the world are in that culture. People who don't want to grow up and have very sensitive feelings. I still grow it(I am in a legal state) but my consumption is about the same as alcohol which is not that often, maybe once every 10 days, 2 weeks. I like plants and growing plants. I want to try and grow my own tobacco and take a stab at making blends. What I like about marijuana is the breeding aspect of it, creating new varietals which is much harder with more established plant species. With that said, I much prefer to smoke a cigar or a pipe since I don't inhale. I can sit and enjoy a cigar or pipe by myself. I prefer to drink or smoke marijuana in company and I don't get company that often, maybe once every 10 days to 2 weeks. I will say that the next day after smoking marijuana is a lot easier than a hangover but I don't indulge myself to the point of hangover or stoneover.

Well, for the marijuana angle, my FSSP pastor set me straight on that. Don't do it...period. I cannot recall his reasoning, it has been several years since that conversation, but it falls under was St. Paul referred to pharmacolegia (I don't know how the Greek spelling goes). But I believe this was one of the prohibited areas which St. Paul warned against. Sorry folks, this is best I could do on my bad memory.

I dont understand why many in our culture are against tobacco, but are less so against marijuana it is absolutely nonsensical.

Cigar is not addictive to me. I used to smoke 1 to 3 a week for 5 to 10yrs. Now I'm more on a 1 to 3 a month.

Heaven should have the best Cuban Cigars and Best pipe tobacco ever thought of. I wish people would go back to writing, taking up ones pen and taking the time to reflect and encourage one another through written words. I am so sad to see that handwriting is disappearing from our youth.

The comparison with alcohol doesn’t really work as one can drink in moderation. I don’t know anyone who smokes marijuana for any purpose but getting high. So the comparison is not really with using alcohol but getting drunk.

Even the most ardent people who I have come across who say you don't need works without faith will acknowledge " faith without works is dead" I might also add that the Churchs position on faith and works seems fairly balanced mind you Faith is foremost but you cannot down play works importance. as the bible says "judge a tree by its fruit" The Catholics churches fruit is substantial, and I am not trying to cast stones but the protestant churches have kowtowed to worldliness with well meaning but ineffectual attempts at the salvation of others.

As someone who considers himself a christian who works in the bible and tries to understand Gods word i have to admit that i enjoy vaping small amounts of cannabis. I know most christians disagree with me and even condemn me for it (especially my protestant brothers), but it is quite a natural thing, less harmfull than alcohol (which i also enjoy in small doses) and all the bible talks about in relation to drugs is wine. And even Paul recommends wine in 1 Tim 5:23. I am also going with Paracelsus and "the dose makes the poison". Unless we talk about shooting something in your vein and other clearly bad substances and habbits like sniffing clue ect. I think if you look at cannabis from an objective point you have to admit its fairly harmless. Vaped i even rank it much lower than smoking cigarettes because i do not inhale burned leafs, just vapor. The bible also says we should not cloud our minds and i try to do that. Most of the times. I know that our body is the temple for the soul and we should keep it clean, thats what motivated me to stop with cigarettes and turn to pipes. To hear you gentlemen and brothers in the Lord talk about it in an open discussion without flat out attacking people like me makes me happy. Even if you disagree with my points. I also find both of your points against mj valid. I too dont like the culture, in the west, around it and im also very strict otherwise and dont want to tear down taboos.

Sir I enjoy your videos and I’m a new pipe smoker but I have to disagree with your views on folks that use cannabis. Myself I don’t and never had but I can 💯 put you straight that there are very intelligent cannabis users. I’ve been fortunate enough in my life to have met thousands of people and your wrong my friend with your view. No disrespect intended at all.

For all that Protestantism has contributed to America it is Catholicism that animated the idea of chivalry to the knight. Catholicism has a natural way of balancing at once centralized yet allows for cultural difference and promotes subsidiarity. Catholicism allows for a juxtaposition that is cogent and reasonable.

I want to respect my elders and authority, but it seems that those two elements that are most against tradition and the passing down of ideas and way of lifes southern agrarian or otherwise. the hay day of most older Americans was in the 60s and 70s the spirit of the age was all about cutting ties with the past.

Dr Harrelson is always trying to tie marijuana use to an “unappealing/ lower class” society. Little does he know, there are hundreds of thousands of good, Christian, southern folks taking marijuana for things like anxiety, arthritis, and other health related ailments. The CBD/thc market is wide ranging and its products are used by millions for many different reasons.

I cannot get in line with the Holy Roman Catholic church. The Holy Roman Empire after they realized when Jesus Christ was around that they could no longer rule the people with the sword so they traded that in for the shepherd's Crook and became the Holy Roman church. Stop praying to false gods such as the saints. Throw away the rosary beads because you're so called repentance has been given unto you by a mortal man. Basically what you are doing is that you are seeking permission to speak to God through a mortal conduit. That is not how that works. You speak directly to God and you repent directly to God not to a mortal man. Step away from this foul version of Christianity and more towards what the Bible tells you, such as Southern Baptist.
