Class of '22 hiker here. I was successful! 200 days on trail. Here is a mental exercise for you. Close your eyes and imagine a rope tied around your waist. Now this rope is really long. Imagine it going all the way up Katahdin and loops around the sign. It comes all the way back to you. You can use the rope to pull yourself up the climbs. Each morning after packing up and checking your spot for forgetten items, close your eyes and mentally trim the miles of rope that you left behind you yesterday. Each day the rope will get shorter. When you are feeling down and thinking of quitting, think about the rope that won't let you leave the trail until Katahdin! You got this!!! It's 90 percent mental. You will get physical stronger each day. But the mental strength has to be there from the start. You are stronger than you can imagine! Keep heading north!!! 😊
Wow. Thanks so much for this visualization! Perfect for the AT, but I’m going to use this for some personal goals/struggles. Maddie is lucky to have so much support and advice. Thanks again!😊
I started following your journey at about half way to Mount Katahdin. I’m going back to watch the earlier videos. I have watched many of them already. This time I will be taking notes of places I’d like to visit on the trail. As I said once. Your documentation of a through hike of the AT is the best I’ve seen. Thank you.
Very refreshing to admit you felt a bit shy. Glad it worked out. Enjoying this. Wish I could have done something like this but I’m too old now. I’ll leave it to my kids!
If you are using Farout for navigation, find a spot with water and then camp there instead of the shelters! I avoided the shelters while I was in the bubble last year. Way too many people sleep near the shelters. That means no sleep! Stealth camp whereever you find water and a flat spot until you are out of the bubble.
I love your attitude and mindset. I camp a lot and it brings a great appreciation for life’s conveniences especially indoor plumbing. I am always grateful and happy for clean water. It is amazing how your perspective changes. Congratulations on starting your AT thruhike! Looking forward to following your adventures on the trail!
Don't ever second guess yourself. You have experience and common sense, you will be fine. It appears that you are hiking strong and moving fairly quick. It's a 6 month hike and Katahdin isn't going anywhere. If you want to stop for an hour or two, do it! Take your time and don't miss a thing along the way. This will be fun at times and work at times BUT, every day on the trail is better than a day on the job. You are doing great! Hike safe, Hike strong, Have fun! geek
Well, that’s the first time I’ve heard a thru hiker start their initial vid with a tutorial on the formation of the Appalachians. Indeed, the tectonic plate collision that created Pangea also created the mountains your about to encounter. At their highest they rivaled the Himalayas! Millions of years of weathering and especially the succession of geologically recent ice ages have reduced them to their current grandeur. I’m hoping that you thoroughly enjoy your chosen path through this wonderful example of nature’s glory.
Oh my gosh this is so much fun watching you do the trail. I’ve always thought what a wonderful opportunity that would be for someone to do. And you are doing it! Keep us posted. I love your daily small posts as well. I’m rooting for you!
I love hiking in the rain (except for difficult ascents because… blisters). But I DESPISE sleeping in humidity or rain. Hate that wet feeling when I’m trying to sleep lol. So I’m wishing you the best nights of sleep, Maddie!!! ❤❤
This is the first of your videos I've watched. I Liked and Subscribed before I even watched it; saw you on Kyle's channel. I live in GA and have always wondered about the GA section of the AT. You do a great job! Looking forward to watching many more. Thanks and God bless.
I’m starting at your beginning of the journey you’re on now that I’ve been enjoying so much. You are not only a marvelous storyteller. You’re a fabulous human.
Watched your vid last night…Like i expected, you are off to a great start…and you share an experience like no other…thanks for taking me along and letting me see the trail like no other hiker has shown.
Thank you Maddie! I hiked the AT in 1999 starting on April 19th. Your videos are so inspiring! Enjoy the hike. It won’t be easy but it’ll be an experience of a life time.
I've been keeping up via your Shorts, but I've still been so excited for this video to drop! Happy trails, and can't wait to see the rest of your journey!
It takes so much courage, passion and resiliency to do this! I love that we get to follow along, you’re doing amazing…the views are STUNNING!! Stay safe 😊
Welcome to Springer Mountain. Maddie the Kentucky Girl. Georgia is now my residence, and has been for a major part of my life. I love watching Appalachian Trail thru hikers, and I find you to be very special. You are a female Daniel Boone roaming the wilderness. Discovering all the nuance of the AT, on your way to Maine. After seeing how you e dressed, I'm giving you the trail name :"RANGER"", I hope you like it?
You got this! I don't know how I came across your channel, but I'm here to follow your journey. Andy "Snowman " Judd. 2019 thru hiker. When yah make it to Connecticut, I'll have trail magic ready! You're going to meet people more extraordinary than the trail! Good luck! ⛄️
I'm loving your trail film making style, but I loved your style already. Be sure you figure out a way to get good sleep. That will make all the difference. Ready for episode 2!
Hi, I'm thrilled by your trail vlogging format. It's very exciting to follow, please take care on the trail, since I'm following 6 other people who are on the trail mostly in Virginia. I'll be following you trip, as I'll be doing the AT myself in 2025, in the mean time, I've been creating my own thru-hike in my own country of Trinidad & Tobago. Btw the other hikers I'm following are Taylor the Nahamsha Hiker, Stella Hikes, Jordan Hikes, Audrey on the AT, Tristan Pinecone Wanderings, and Bartman Outdoors. They would be good motivation on your evenings at camps, or in a hostel.
Hi Maddie, the Urushiol oil is in the root, stem and leaves. Take precautions now. Wash your hands with COLD water and soap. Use "Ivy Block" and/or "Zanfel".
You are amazing, your an inspiration, I envy you, would love to have been able to do this when I was a little younger, thanks for taking on this great adventure and letting us join you 👍👏x
What an incredible opportunity, congratulations on the experience, stay positive and take it one step at a time👍👍 you can do anything. Really excellent video too
Hi Maddie, I have been following your adventure on IG and was waiting for this first part. You made a very good video, thanks for sharing. Good Luck, be safe and have Fun!
I'm curious about you picking your campsite out in the morning and then slowing down to get there in the late afternoon. What is the reasoning for that? When I hiked the AT, we hiked until it was evening and found a flattish spot for a tent before the sun went down.
Great first vid. Are the camp areas designated? As in you can only camp in those spots? I’d hike off trail and find a spot on my own lol. And what happens at the other end? I’m sure it dosent just come out of the Forrest to a bus stop.
Do for posting videos enjoy following you. When did you actually start hiking the Appalachian trail meaning what month and date? I tell the weather's already warm because there was bugs by the AT marker on the trail. Plan on doing it myself once I retire. Thank you in advance for your reply.
Most of those shoes/boots hanging in the tree at Neel Gap are not from hikers who get off trail, rather they're from hikers who change footwear due to foot problems, blisters, arch support, etc. Think about it, if you get off at Neel and throw your boots in the tree do you go home in socks or clogs? Take care, good vibes your way, Crackerjack.
What I said was the mythology I heard, but that definitely makes more sense. I was thinking, why not wear those shoes on day hikes or give them to someone else?
Im thrilled to find you using the REI flash air tent.....I noticed it was raining.....tell me how did it perform I have not used mine in the rain yet......?
So, is a blow-up air mattress worth the weight savings? My self-inflating Thermarest is only 1.5 lbs , but I see hikers an the AT blowing up their mattresses all the time.

You can get a rash from century old botanical specimens! Evil

Like the backpack. Is that X-Pac material backpack?
Yep!!
So, is a blow-up air mattress worth the weight savings? My self-inflating Thermarest is only 1.5 lbs , but I see hikers an the AT blowing up their mattresses all the time.
Great positive VIBES……Trek safe Beer drinking WOMAN 🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺
Hi , just wondering on your start date,
Beer? What?! LFG!
