(Bookbinding) Making byzantine style leather journal Book

- In this video i am making Full Leather Book with blind and gold tooling, Hand sewn on Cloth Tapes and has Hollow back spine.
The inspiration is medieval byzantine style.
The leather is goatskin sprinkled with Potassium permanganate and blind and gold tolled with beautiful design. Endpaper is handmade lokta paper white and red texture.
Paper pages are creme colored and sprinkled with Potassium permanganate which gives a nice contrast.
Paper thickness is 120 gsm and 344 pages.
Headband is islamic style. One book's headband is sewn in red and white.
The books height is 22 cm and width is 16cm.

@@leeporter6926 Looks a lot like a portuguese saying. 'Dale tudo', in portuguese it would means something like 'give everything' for something, in a possitive way. But i'm not sure about this tattoo.

@@muhammedbenobaid2936 If you need to have just some single books, they can be rebound by such craftsmen as this guy. But if you need to produce a huge batch of such books, then I also don't know.
This is the way I was trained when I was an apprentice almost 40 years ago but we did not use PVA glue it was rabbit glue and hoof glue, I still have the blank books I made as well as some of the paperback books I converted to hardbacks as class projects. I was only one of the two females in a class of 40 boys back in the day, not many young ladies bake then had ever considered bookbinding as a career choice. It is something I am for ever grateful to have been able to of learned and a boss who thought I had the potential to excel at, because without him sponsoring me I would never of been able to of study bookbinding.

Well it was the mythical time of the 80s so it makes sense to use rabbit glue.
Two questions: Was this a class that was offered during the high school years? Also, which glue is better for long-term and HEAVY book usage (i.e., frequently studied reference manuals, daily devotions, etc.)?
As a fantasy author, I'd love to have a custom made rustic style print like this for my personal collection. That would be incredible to pass on to my kids.

I'm about to finish my novel too and I'm learning how to do bookbinding so I can make a copy for myself, of course, I could never do such a masterpiece like the author of the video but I'm optimistic 😅
A long time ago I learned bookbinding on a technical school. After a course of four years you got a diploma and then you could be an apprentice who has to learn the real craft. To see an artisan like this man at work? Sheer joy and pleasure. And, after all these years? My hands are starting to itch. Thanks for this beautiful demonstration of advanced bookbinding.

How can bookbinding course take 4 years
I visited a graphic school in Germany a while ago which had a bookbinding course. Some of the books the students made were insane. It's such an underrated craft
In this time when Bookbinding as an art-form stands on the verge of extinction, this video reaffirms that no great things completely be tarnished away. As a typical bookish Bengali person, I adore your craftsmanship. Keep up those marvellous jobs.

I am less than a novice, working on learning to bind my first book. I am both impressed and intimidated by the talent you've earned mastering your craft.
I'm about to get started on making my first book with a rounded spine, and I worried about how I would round the spine with only limited equipment. I didn't know whether to laugh or cry when I saw you just smacking the book against the table with a hammer.
For me, rubber mallet no problem! But I don't know what to substitute a book binding machine. Im worried those are expensive when I would just want to make an occasional book here and there.
@@snickerdoodle8776 nerdforge is good for some diy book making ideas and maybe look for some more amateur videos ive seen a book press made with 4 clamps and two kitchen cutting boards
Really, other than the plough there’s ways to work around most all bookbinding equipment. . Don’t have a press? Use a pile of weights. Don’t have a sewing frame or cradle? use a chair back or buy an old picture frame. Planing the page edges is more problematic, and a book plough really does do the best job, but failing that, a vice and some sandpaper can do a reasonable job. As for rounding a spine, how else would you do it, other than “gently” hitting it with a mallet/hammer?

I feel like I’ve gone back in time watching this beautiful craftsmanship. It’s so exquisite there’s no way I could ever despoil it by writing or drawing in it! Who could possibly think they had anything worthy to put between such a beautiful binding? Only God I think.
A quil pen and real ink in caligraphy!
Yeah, I have a quill pen and just started working on my calligraphy skills. I could write anything with those fancy materials and if written in Latin, even a Medieval version of a Craigslist Missed Connection would be impressive
i made a hand bound blank book once (a lot simpler than this one) and had the same conundrum.
i ended up giving it to my sister who is an artist and she used it as a sketchbook.

Fantastic artistry. I used to see many law books bound in this manner in my grandfather’s office (Kachehri) almirahs who was a practising advocate. I revisited my childhood of 1960’s through this video. Thanks for rekindling my nostalgia. 👌👍👏🙏

This sort of thing takes my breath away Everytime as a blacksmith and therefore another traditional artisan you have my deepest thanks and gratitude for keeping beauty alive.
Bookbinding is very much time consuming but also one of the most satisfying things I know. The waiting is the thing I hate most. But the smell of the paper, glue, leather. Books are the best things in the world and give a new coat to the old naked book is something really fantastic.
Just stumbled upon this with no specific interest. However the craftsmanship shown in this presentation is awesome. Glad to see this still happens in the age of automation and digital realms.

Чего ей не быть красивой - натуральная кожа, теснение с золочением. А переплет на лентах с имитацией шнуров кусками кожи... при таких материалах мог и нормальный шнуровой переплет сделать а не подделку.

@@PravMir79 Не берите в голову. Возможно это мой бзик, но рельефные бинты без шнуров, для меня лично попахивает цыганщиной типа "дорого-богато". Это что-то сродни мебели под старину, весь конструктив которой предполагает изготовление из натуральной древесины, которая на самом деле сделана из ДСП а под натуральное дерево только покрашена.
Понятно что во времена давние, когда домашние библиотеки были полны старинными книгами, новые тогда книги переплетались подобным способом чтобы красиво смотрелись на полке вместе со старыми и стилистически от них не отличаться. Но в современных библиотеках книги практически всегда с современным видом корешка, и книга в подобном исполнении (особенно учитывая что это по всей видимости будущий дневник), скорее всего останется таковой в единственном экземпляре. Этому дневнику не нужно быть похожим на остальные книги библиотеки...

As a leathercrafter I've often wondered how book binding is done. I really enjoyed watching you exercise your skills in this video. Amazing work and amazing detail!! I wish I knew how to do that sort of work or at least could find someone in my area that could so I could get some books I love rebound. In particular, I have a original book from 1867 which could use rebinding. Who knows, maybe I will be able to get into doing book binding with leather since I already do leather work anyhow. Thank you for the video. I subscribed so I can see more of your work. You are so talented.

I was wondering, did you make all your equipment yourself? I'm especially looking at your paper trimmer. I've never seen anyone else use anything like that! Also, are you self-taught? This is fantastic!
Thanks Amanda! I have made some things, like book press and finishing press but I bought my lying or cutting press with plough as you mentioned. Then I taught myself by watching other bookbinders on youtube, the only course I have been on is learning gold embossing and blind embossing.
