Seized Audi 3.0 TFSI Full Breakdown | What Caused It?

- Bought this 09 Audi A6 with a seized 3.0T engine under the guise that it just needed a starter or an access module to activate it. The previous owner replaced the starter and still nothing when turning the key over. Turns out the engine was seized and that's why the starter wouldn't rotate the engine.
In this video I will be tearing down the already removed engine and finding out exactly why it failed. We will also be cutting the lower girdle off to remove the torque converter since its seized and won't rotate to allow access to the bolts.
This is part 2 of a 3-part series consisting of a removal video, a teardown video, and finally a reinstallation video with a freshened up used engine.

My 2nd super thanks ever gifted! Much appreciated, thank you @mbergheaud 🙏🏻
@@Mechani_Cole Thanks for the excellent content
German Engineering at its best, what a nightmare. I accidentally stripped my torque converter bolt, and then my nightmare began. Thank you for sharing your experience
This has to be why they lost 2 world wars right? Haha! I've totally stripped a TC bolt before too and had to pull the converter out with the engine. What a pain in the ass! We're you able to get yours off?
Helppp plsss!!! I just stripped mine and I have no idea what to do
@@Mechani_Colepls help me! Mines are stripped , I got one out

@@Mechani_Cole I dooo, but no luck! 😔 I tried a air hammer and welding but no luck
Bright side, now you know more about these engines visually and hands on. Good experience I think.
Thank You for this, on my 2016 SQ5, I got a P164d00 code, which is the reduced oil pressure switch, it's 2 of them on the engine a high & low. And you just gave me the perfect view of the one I have to replace and future reference if I have to replace the high. Really appreciate this.
Impressive work! Such a complicated project. Glad you finally got the torque converter off!
Do you still have the filter housing. Check the drain at the bottom under filter element. See if the rubber plug is still there.
These 3.0s don't have that. That's on the older 2.0 engines
@Mechani_Cole on 3.0 at the back of engine should the black plastic oil filter housing it has 3 holes when removed. One for oil in one for oil out. And one for drain when filter is being changed. Inside the housing there is a round metal spring washer looking thing and towards the back of the housing is a black rubber plug it lifts up when cap is loosened. That piece dry rots and falls apart. That prevents it from building oil pressure.
@adombarzdis oh I see. I replaced that with a new part. So didn't even check. This failure was caused by a bad pcv leaking coolant into oil though
You would have had a lot of late mix leaking out On disassembly.
Got a no start low compression A6 3.0 TFSI. Gonna do a complete overhaul anyways tomorrow 🫡
Great videos as always, can you share what repair manual you are using for jobs like this. Thanks

@@Mechani_Cole thank you so much and keep up with good work.
I was able to pry on my flywheel with a crowbar to turn my seized engine since it was junk. Like you I hate buying parts when I’m looking at a good one that just needs taken off
Didn't work in my situation. Wouldn't rotate until the main bearings were broke free
I'm in a similar situation to you, seized 3.0 V6 Supercharged. After watching you remove yours, i decided to give mine a shot. Quick question regarding the torque converter, do you reckon you could have used a pry bar to bend away the flex plate and get an open ended spanner (aka "wrench") to remove the torque converter bolts from the flex plate/flywheel?
Cheers
No. Not enough room in my opinion. Plus keepnin mind that you are bending something that spins in a circle. Bend it too much and it's not going to rotate evenly
@@Mechani_Cole I see, thanks for the heads up. I'm not bothered about bending it too far as long as I don't damage the torque converter, I can replace the flywheel. Perhaps I can bend it further and get a long spanner inside? Either way, looks like I'll be in for a world of fun this weekend 😂
@memleak3037 make a video if you can. I'm curious if you can get it off without cutting it like I did
@@memleak3037Did you manage to remove the torque converter a different way. May have to do the same soon . Cheers
@@PeteAskew-r6x hi mate, when I removed the engine I found that it was a different setup from above. There was a big gap between the flywheel and torque converter, it was as easy and unbolting it.
From memory, I believe the other difference was that the passenger side driveshaft (my car is RHD, UK version) needed to be removed as it runs between the flywheel and torque converter. If yours is similar to mine and you try to pull the engine out without removing that first, the engine won't budge. Hope that helps
Did you ever put the new engine back in? I was looking for the next video, I am getting ready to install engine assembly in my a7 that was seized and was curious about the fluid lost from the tranny. Wondering if I should pre fill torque converter?
Just about to put it in the week hopefully. If you lost fluid, you can just top it off a little either before or after
Am thinking to get a Q7 sline prestige I tested drive it already it has the same engine but to be honest Audi vw cars are beautiful
That's our next car. Been wanting a Q7 since we had a kid and need more room. Try to get 2014 or newer if possible. Less issues from what I'm seeing. Much more updated than this 09 3.0 for sure.
Only things I've heard is they go through tires and brakes quickly due to their size.
How many hours did it take to pull the engine like that
I'd guess about 3 hours max
Was what the head bolt pattern
For removing? Or for the shape of the head of the bolt?
do you work on your vehicles only? which state are you in?
@ammreid I work on other cars too. I'm located in Las Vegas
@@Mechani_Cole damn..way to far..thanks and good work!
If the motor is in fit condition then it is not a problem but the work for this scrap... a used one which rotates cist around 2000 Eur so i think is the work not worth to diassemble this scrap. But for a Video is great 😂
Appreciate the comment! It's up and running and driving now. Video coming soon🫡
so many timing chain tensioner makes owner poor.
I'm just think of what to do to precent mine from similar scenario.... I think changing oil at 4k miles, new PCV, thermostat, checking the charger cores......and yet still an injector might burst into a cylinder... :)
Yeah for sure, or the HPFP can fail and leak gas inside as well.
@@Mechani_Cole Yeah, I forgot about that also :( And even I have a bit of a slow start witch might be the HPFP exactly... I don't know if it's financially sound to do all of that for prevention only...
My 2012 A6 had a gas smell on the oil, and slow crank in the morning, changed hpfp and solve issue..running great now. 120k miles and next I'll do apr coils...and probability stage 1
@luiszubillaga1463 I've heard that is a common issue for sure. I'm pretty sure on this engine the supercharger packs leaked coolant into the engine and locked it up. Good thing you caught yours early enough✌🏼
Total waste of time,no answer of cause and even no experience how to release crankshaft.
You Boy should be doing no more than oil changes)))
I'd pay you $1000 if you can release this crank without cutting it goof ball. The bearings were welded to the crank. Stick to watching videos and don't pick up a wrench 😅
The cause was listed in the previous video...
