  • Have you wanted to make your own surfaces for pastel painting? An easy way to make a textured surface is to use clear gesso on a support such as acid free mat board or watercolor paper. In this demo I paint on a surface I prepared by toning clear gesso with yellow liquid acrylic. I give you tips for painting on the texture and how you can make it work for you!
    To see a closeup photo of the finished painting as well as the directions for making the support head over to my blog. Here is the link:

    Thank you so much for this fantastic tutorial, Karen! 🙏 I struggle with landscape painting, as I am more of a animal painter. But its time to learn how to put them in their own habitat - so nature and landscapes it is now! 🎨 You are an amazing teacher, and a pure joy to watch and learn from! ✨️⚘️

    Thanks Karen. I appreciate the advice re creating depth and the importance of a "z" shape to lead the viewer's eye. . Important foundation knowledge that can be forgotten with lack of practice. Thank you for another very helpful video. I love your little wheat fields painting.

    If a more uniform smoothness is desired, I use a small foam roller to apply the clear gesso.
    Of course, you can use the roller on some areas of the board and brush strokes where you want more uneven texture.
    Also, often clouds will form around and above distant mountains.

    I've been watching and learning now for a few weeks. I love the way that your process leads to a finished piece. I'm not quite brave enough to do this as I find it difficult to visualise what I want as a final product. I don't have any art theory or depth of knowledge. But .... I love what I'm seeing. Thank you.

    This has been absolutely More then helpful. I made some surfaces using the Golden Fine Pumice Gel and was really struggling with that texture. I was fighting it, instead of embracing it as you suggest in your perfectly timed video. I was all but ready to give the surfaces I made to the grand kids to paint on. I am so glad I waited! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! I am heading to give it another go right now. God Bless You Pretty Lady! Much Love and Respect as always from North Carolina, Stacy

    Thank you Karen for the marvellous demonstration. That surface texture adds a new dimension to pastel painting. Exciting!
    I’ve tried several grounds to create a surface that brings out the best in my pastels. Enjoyed Golden’s “Fine Pumice Gel”, it’s very fine with a pliancy which was nice. Golden’s “Acrylic Ground for Pastels” wore out my pastels too fast! Liquitex Clear Gesso was pretty good, but hard on fingers… I’ve also tried lightly sanding the last two and that created a new surface again but did not allow for many layers.
    The main thing was I enjoyed experimenting and will continue to do so.

    Fantastic Karen. Greetings from Barcelona. Love the colours of the wheat field. I watch all of your pastel videos and have found them so useful. I have a question: when you prepare the surface with the clear gesso and paint brush do you use very free brush strokes or go from top to bottom or side to side? Also do you ever use any other surface primer? I hear fine pumice gel is good.

    • @KarenMargulis
      @KarenMargulis  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for a great question. I do random brush strokes because I like random texture but you could be more precise or even apply with a foam roller for smoother texture.

    Thank you from Southeast Texas. This video is so fine. Question have you ever put pumice gel on a linen canvas to use as your pastel support? You are soo creative and do not seem afraid to try “what if” Really enjoyed the art you shared on Facebook last week, and your process was amazing. You are a joy to watch esp listening to your explanations of what you are doing and why. Jane Martin

    Hi Karen, Hello from the UK. Thank you for such a great demo, I really enjoyed it and I shall be trying out your new techniques shortly. :) One question I have is: do the pastels adhere/anchor quite well with this type of surface? I'm guessing that they probably do as there is a texture, but does the surface need setting with any spays afterwards?

    • @KarenMargulis
      @KarenMargulis  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching! The pastels adheres well to the texture without spray however it will skip over the grooves so I often rub in my first layers so that I don't have distracting bits of paper color in the painting.

    I worked on a textured surface last night and wished I had watched this first, it’s beautiful. I had trouble with layering, it seemed the pastel just sat on the surface. Do you spray this when done to keep it from falling off?

    Thank you for sharing your techniques! My pastels don't seem to adhere to the paper as well as yours. What brand of pastels would you recommend? Currently I am using Faber Castell, but they don't seem soft enough.

    • @mjpete27
      @mjpete27 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chris Ortiz I don’t have a lot of experience, I have found the Fabre pastels a medium hardness. Look into a real soft pastel, you don’t have to break the bank with Schmincke or Sennelier, Mungyo has A very nice handmade pastel and their soft pastels are nice too! Black has a house pastel that is kinda like a Rembrandt. I have found these better/softer than the Faber sticks.

    What kind of pastel pencil do you use? Thanks

    • @KarenMargulis
      @KarenMargulis  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I rarely use pastel pencils but when I do I choose from an old stash I have of Stabilo and Koh I Noor pastel pencils.Lately I just use hard pastels such as Nupastel for detail.
