  • Follow along with Blick Featured Artist Susan Kuznitsky as she breaks down her approach to plein air painting with pastels. Choose a sturdy easel to work from, then quickly sketch out your composition with big positive and negative shapes using a charcoal pencil. Lay in flat areas of color with pastels, then brush over the colors with a solvent to turn them into a paint-like pigment. Continue to add details and shadows, being sure to layer your lightest colors last.

    I use gambling solvent-free gel to paint with sennelier oil pastels and even with it with sennelier oil paint. It's better and safer because a lot of oils people use is really dangerous and people need to wear a mask. I've ordered a 2-pack 20x24 canvas and new gambling solvent-free gel but I'm a little afraid of the size of the canvas, makes me feel like buying more paint before painting on them. 5:37

      We're all for wearing protective equipment if you feel it's necessary, and for selecting what's right for you in your studio! Sorry we can't help with offering stuff that makes you feel like buying more paint, that's kind of our thing... ;-)

    Do you use any kind of spray to protect the painting when finished ?

    • @Blick_Art
      @Blick_Art  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We'll see if the artist has a reply based on her individual practice, but in general, a light coat of fixative is a sensible measure to control dust, especially in a frame using plastic glass, which attracts dust through static electricity. Most pastel painters try to avoid excessive use of fixative because saturation can darken colors an alter the image.

      Hi C.E., Susan uses both hard and soft pastels, not oil.
