dude... get a headlamp... indispensable for most under hood and tight space work. Awesome work and patience restoring this incredible piece of automotive history.

Yep. Took me a little while but I now have 2. They are just a little difficult to do decent videos with. You have to hold really still. :)

Painless wiring makes a complete harness for the CJ-7's. I will add they are very proud of there products.

I've heard. Don't really see a reason to spend $800 on something that isn't as good as the original. You can find an original wire harness in really good shape for $150. All of the CJ7 wire harnesses from the factory were the same configuration. All you need to do is find one from that decade.
My goal always has been to keep this CJ7 as original as original. I've gone to great lengths to make that happen.

Cool Guy , I paid about $100 for my harness on eBay, with dash lights and everything. It’s not been easy to figure out, however, what goes on inside the engine bay, as I have a 289ci Ford engine inside my CJ7 (which I believe is a 77/78 on a frame of a 1956 CJ5.)
Working on that now, and I also have a lot of wires left inside the dash too. I replaced the original “farm style to run” dash which was diamond plate and had a dash starter with original dash. I wish I hadn’t it hasn’t started since...I really appreciate your videos.

hey cool guy, can you tell me where the ground for the dash is? my volt meter and radio randomly lose power, i check alternator/battery grounding already

Well that is the fun of the AMC electrical gremlins. Essentially, the body, frame, and engine are supposed to be all grounded to each other. All of the gauges ground through their housing and into the dash. The dash in turn, grounds into the body through the mounting bolts, body is then grounded to the frame. Frame to the engine. Engine to the battery. You can do this by scraping tiny spot of paint off to connect with the raw steel or you can run small ground wires to each of the major parts. Either way, you should be able to take a voltmeter and see what is grounded to what. It takes time but will solve almost all of your electrical issues.

It’s a Spinal Tap movie reference.

Very intimidating when I looked at it the first time. But once I got into it, it's actually very simple. I did go back and strip off all the tape and used acetone to remove all the sticky residue and grime on the wires. Another way to do this is to soak the whole thing in a batch of diluted grease remover like Simple Clean. Relabeled everything and cleaned up the connectors with electronic cleaner. Put back on the electrical tape and self sealing wrap and did a better job than the factory. It came out nice a super clean! Only had to replace a couple of the connectors. When I put it back in, I figured out where some of the "random" connections went. One in specific was the cigarette lighter power and ground.
