  • With the dash on, its difficult to see what is going on behind it with the wiring and how the wires are routed and what they go to. While my dash was out, I cleaned everything up and powder coated all the pedal assemblies. Wanted to document what is going on back there for reference later. Hopefully will benefit others. There is another similar video done right after this one of the vent/heater/fan cables behind the dash as well.

Thanks so much for taking the time to do this. I am dealing with a 1983 J5 panel as a newbie and really appreciate your time to make this video.

Great job on laying out and walking through the dash wiring. This is a great resource for all original Jeep owners. Thank you! Mike

Thanks so much for this. Hands down the best layout of interior wiring on the entire internet. Jeep should give you stock options for this. Please keep going in this series. Especially troubleshooting any of the gauges and switches. Thanks again.

Excellent professional video! I'm getting ready to pull the dash on my 81 cj5 and this was very helpful!

Cool Jeep! I recently bought a 83 CJ7 with a 258 in it. Previous owners of this Jeep have absolutely butchered the wiring over the years. I have the actual factory service/repair manuals for the Jeep. I’ve removed all the wiring from the Jeep and going through it and fixing and eliminating all unnecessary wiring to clean it all up. Part of the butchering that was done they cut and removed the ignition switch connecter and had some kind remote toggle switches mounted under the dash to start and start it. I need some help and you might be able to give it to me. I need a pic of the actual wiring going into the back of the ignition switch connector. The manual is really good but it just doesn’t show that level of detail that I need to see. If you could do that I would really appreciate it.

There are some images here that I've referenced before. Is this what you're looking for?

There is an ato clip that plugs into the fuse box I believe for ignition power. If you have a newer radio with a memory, you'll need to find an available always on 12v. I used a fuse piggy back on another fuse that's always on. Then a ground you could get from any body bolt behind the dash.

Where did you order your wiring kit from. I’m doing an 81 cj7 myself. Wanna redo the whole wiring harness.

I might have been lucky, but I pulled all of my existing wire and just soaked the whole clump in degreaser and spent some time cleaning them. Was all intact with very few splices so I was able to reuse the original.

Did you find the junction from the factory harness that is where the factory lighter connects?

No, there was a lighter that was pretty beat up that I've removed but the PO had cut the wires to it, and I didn't see one that specifically went to it.
