Count Duckula was a vampire duck who was resurrected one night, but accidentally using Tomato Ketchup instead of blood, and so is now a vegetarian vampire duck. I hope that makes about as much sense as the cartoon does. ;P

Given that the Super Mario Bros. Super Show had a cartoon with "Tomato-Sauce-Sucking Vampires", complete with scenes which look pretty graphic if not for the fact it's just all tomato sauce, Count Duckula is not actually all THAT strange a premise. :P

The saxophone is indeed the objective. This is based on the episode of Count Duckula called "No Sax Please, We're Egyptian!" (the title being a parody of the film "No Sex Please, We're British!").

Ah, Count Duckula was a fun TV series I'd watch in the early 90s. The premise of episodes, from what I remember, is Count Duckula's castle can time travel so they end up going to different time periods and have to get back to the castle before it leaves without them. Duckula himself is somewhat of a coward and non-violent, vegetarian vampire, Igor is loyal vulture but always trying to get Duckula to behave like a real vampire and Nanny is a huge, doting ogre hen with a permanent arm sling who's not very bright but very protective of Duckula.

the butler and the big guy are characters from the show - the big guy is Nanny, who has a running gag of not using doors, and the butler is Igor, the butler
i just wanted you to play this since i loved Count Duckula as a kid - it and Danger Mouse were part of my childhood

Nanny, in spite of her terrifying physical prowess, is in fact a lady

The "guy" who smashes walls (not doors) is a female housekeeper.
The butler is another of Duckula's servants. He's the one who accidentally used tomato sauce instead of blood to create a vampire.
Count Duckula plays saxophone. His castle, seen in the background at the beginning, can teleport.
The bad guys using the ropes are recurring characters.
I played the ZX Spectrum of the game. I had no idea what to do when I was a kid. I also used to watch the animated cartoon.

The disappearing floors have a slightly different pattern on their side, which you can see at 6:36 - definitely not easy to spot though.

We have Nickelodeon to thank for the show. Cosgrove Hall's Danger Mouse was a *huge* hit over here. Executives from Nick paid Cosgrove Hall a visit, asking them for a spin-off. One of the executives saw a drawing of Duckula and was like "That's the one I want!"

Wow, a game I didn’t think (or at least remember) existed for a show I’ve watched, but forgot existed. Talk about a surprise and a blast from the past.
I bet people who’ve seen the cartoon voted for this out of nostalgia for the cartoon.

The intro/outro to the Count Duckula cartoon remains in my mind many years (now decades) after watching it on ABC (Australia) after school and before dinner. Huh, never knew there was a game, but also not surprised.

The original cartoon was excellent. I suspect many voted for this one having loved the show when they were kids.

Count Duckula was a spin-off of Danger Mouse. Both popular cartoons in the UK.

Nickelodeon commissioned Count Duckula and therefore their first original show.

9:55 If you watch closely that big butler put 30 extra seconds on the clock for you! If you leave the screen and come back and he reappears this could be a way to really help out by boosting time significantly without using the trainer.

    • @Pixelmusement
      @Pixelmusement  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Right... but I think it took about 30 seconds for him to appear in the first place. :P

The show was great, something kids could watch along with their parents who were into Universal/Hammer Horror movies. Some of the jokes were pretty dark, too.

As interesting as this game can be, the fact that it has a time limit is reason enough for me not to touch it.
My anxiety literally makes me sick whenever I play a game with a time limit. Hell, even Super Mario can make me ill nowdays...

You're probably running into T64 files which aren't really "tape" files, they're just collections of files that older C64 emulators used instead of true tape emulation. TAP files should load much closer to real tape speed.

OK, that explains that then! :B

In addition to this, I think some releases of VICE come with "True Drive Emulation" (for floppy drives) activated by default. This is more accurate (intended to work with nonstandard quickload schemes), but of course it comes with a speed hit.
However I've found that not only is "True Drive Emulation" often not necessary, but that there are actually some games that will only load with it DEactivated. I usually leave it off unless a specific game won't load without it. The "Warp Speed" option can be several times faster when it's not active.

Back in the days I had no idea who Duckula was, nor what is the goal here. But I liked cartoonish ducks (Disney's Duckworld), I liked everything about ancient Egypt, and this game is also quite pleasing for the eyes and ears. But I assumed it's generic stuff mostly, with too few things going on. Making this thing multiload, something along Prince of Persia, and filed with puzzles and interesting happenings - would make for a very good game. Then again, I didn't get into it properly, and for a one-loader it still might be perfectly fine ordinary old-school platformer. Decent for what it supposed to be.

as a little kid I remember being hyped up by the intro for count duckula and danger mouse only to be thrust into complete boredom watching scenes of two characters saying UK humor that went over my head instead of stuff involving any action.

_Count Duckula_ episodes are on TH-cam if you're interested: "No Sax Please, We're Egyptian!" I love the series.

Would have been better, and more logical, with a standard health bar, instead of that weird time draining mechanic. This is at least the third game I've seen in this series, ruined by an unnecessary time limit, oh well!

I would reccomend watching the show. It's good, but very British.
Edit: I've worked out. I think the person may have been thinking of it's infamous sequel, which is REALLY bad.

Enough people have filled you in on the original cartoon, but I'm also lead to believe there's a very funny dub of the show for the Mexican market, which was full of innuendo and contemporary political humour. Anyone from over that way able to confirm or deny?

So it's a Metroidvania with no combat. Or else a low-grade Montezuma's Revenge knockoff.

Next time just take a look at Wikipedia, to understand that this is a TV series, and that's why people chose it.

Definitely not one of the great C64 soundtracks.
