This is how I feel! People think that everything associated with Blackness is bad. That's one reason I connect more with Dominican Spanish and Caribbean Spanish is because many of the people who speak it are Black like me. I hate how there are no formal programs that teach Dominican or Caribbean Spanish, its hard trying to find resources on Dominican Spanish. I'm glad that channels like yours and bilingue blogs exist!!

    • @Blacklingual

YES! Ugh I'm so glad that you relate! I could talk about my frustration about how people treat Black dialects, culture, and people for the rest of my life. But that's one of the reasons this channel exists--to show people that Ebonics and Dominican Spanish are legitimate dialects that deserve recognition and appreciation. So thank you again for your support because having subscribers like you who watch and interact with my videos helps me reach even more people through TH-cams algorithm 🙏🏽❤
P.S. I'm also going to be making more Dominican Spanish content so you'll get more of that here. My first actual Dominican lesson will be up next week 🇩🇴🎉

A white women commented on that comment and said “you have multiple? Lol”. I obviously had to reply to the second comment and say “you knew what she meant”. Who are you to try to correct someone on the way they choose to communicate? I don’t understand how anyone can be so rude! I love this video! And I’m glad you said what you said! It is a bit insulting to a persons culture and heritage to live in their country and yet not only refuse to speak their language properly, but also to expect them to just get over it in fear of being viewed as judgmental.
As a multilingual person, I would never do this in any country in the world, and I painstakingly try to avoid this by getting better at the languages I speak.
A little empathy (putting yourself in some else’s shoes) goes a long way. Although, this does kind of sound like you overreacting to an otherwise innocent joke.

Hey, everybody speaks Spanish differently; however, I do have a legit question. I know Dominicans do not pronounce the letter "s" as: Uno - Do - Tre or pill = patilla, or corner = equina. I was wondering, during grade school in DR when reading from a book during class, do you have to pronounce the "s" and do your teachers emphasize a pronunciation of all the letters in the Castellano alphabet?

I just found your channel and what your doing is dope. This kinda hits close to home because my granddaddy was black American born in GA in 1934 then his dad moved his wife and kids to Cuba in 1939 til 1948 to smuggle rum to Florida, so my granddaddy grew up in Cuba and lived in Miami in a time when you had to know Spanish to live in south Florida and I grew up hearing him speak Spanish all the time, he tried to teach me and my cousins to speak the language then we lived in Ohio after he passed and we could speak a little Spanish but we grew up around the Mexican dialect and in school we were told what we knew was wrong so that made me and my cousins not speak Spanish at all and after 20 years we basically lost the ability to speak Spanish and now at 27 I want to learn to speak the language because me and my cousins wanna go to Cuba to see the land where our grandfather spent 10 years of his life and experience the culture he loved and always told us about

Interesting video. Thanks for sharing. I myself am Dominican and they way we speak Spanish is not one of our strong suits. The point of language is communication so you can get your point across. Spanish speakers from other countries often have a hard time understanding Dominicans. Herein lies the problem. Whether it sounds ugly or uneducated is another conversation. Colombian, Mexican, and Peruvian Spanish stand out to me because these are easily intelligible by other Spanish speakers. It may take a non-Dominican a moment to figure out that gobeina’o means gobernados.

Drumming with rhythms and solos, call and response in the music and the chanting, and you also see this in the blues which obviously is also a black music. Im talking in this case about rumba, guaguancó, són, plena, bomba, etc. Idk know much about DR honestly besides merengue, bachata, and modern pop tastes. Dominicans don't consider themselves black and really forsake their blackness though. I mean there are even jokes about it. You might be Dominican if on your cedula it says anthing but "black." They use terms like Indio oscuro, medio indio, etc. In addition there is a whole documentary that really nails Dominican culture with regard to race from PBS.
Yes, they don't like Haitians...and it is cause they invaded the DR...but that isn't the ONLY reason. wink wink.

@@Blacklingual I agree depending on what you mean by "blackness." If you are referring to their African influences and heritage ...I agree. If you mean the imported "blackness" of the Dominican York...I and, I believe, most Dominicans would disagree.

Dominican Spanish has nothing to do with blackness. There are black latinos all over latin american that speak the same dialect of their birthland.

@@jorgelugo9473 The predominant characteristic of Dominican and Caribbean Spanish is from the Canary Islands where the majority of the Spanish immigrants came from. Spain sent them over. I can't imagine there isn't any African influence in Dominican Spanish however. There is African influence all throughout Spanish and Portuguese speaking America. So agree in part.
I'd also comment that "blackness" cannot be put in a single category. There are many characteristics that "blacks" have in common but so-called African Americans are not the same as Brazilian blacks, Caribbean blacks, Mexican, Peruvian blacks...or even African blacks who are distinct one from another. It is similar to saying "Europeaness" "Whiteness" or "indianness" with regard to American Indians. They are made up of many distinct groups that happen to have similar skin color and physical features.

Haces un contenido divertido pero está mal que taches la bandera Dominicana, eso es una falta de respeto.

Africans couldn't speak properly thats why black Latinos and black brasilian speak a broken version.

    • @Blacklingual
      @Blacklingual  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Well, my point is that these aren't "broken versions." They are their own dialects that actually have their own structure and grammatical rules that are different from the main language they branched off from. So not broken--evolved.

I'm Hispanic and I know a lot of Spanish accents, and you have chosen one of the worst Spanish speaking accents. The reason is bad, is not because of anybody being black or white, it has nothing to do with skin color, but everything to do with bad pronunciation of words. Learning Dominican Spanish is harder to learn because it's so bad.

Bad pronounciation is subjective that’s an opinion and rooted in white supremacy. You watched this whole video and still haven’t learnt anything
