OMG Niko! This is the best "the book was middling" review I ever saw.
My take on teenagers is that they will do incredible things and blow you away, then follow it up with something mortifyingly stupid. That's what I was going for here, and based on your comments, I think I did okay in that regard. As a new reader, I can see where you'd struggle to figure out what age this is meant for.
Now that the coming of age portion of the story is over, the rest of the series should be more of what you (and I) like.

I gotta get back to Mike's books. I really enjoyed Becoming a Druid but I don't think I can squeeze it in until I wrap up Sun eater and Malazan which will consume>80% of my 2025 physical reads.
