Obviously, I think we're all skeptical about the durability of this upper. Who cares about the carbon footprint of the manufacturing of a shoe if it's single-use, or the upper tears after putting it on and taking it off four times.
If it lasts 400-1000 miles as a running shoe, then years more as a walking shoe, then they've done something incredible. If not, they've net INCREASED their carbon emissions and created more microplastics, by making a more frequently disposed product (like how the foam of most on cloud shoes breaks down prematurely compared to other brands because it has less material overall [the holes]).

i hope this technology becomes personalized for end consumers in future iterations. this would be life changing for folks with oddly shaped feet, such as myself. our options are limited... i cant wear flips flops everywhere 😂

i went into my program at school to be able to work on stuff like this and i just am so glad to see i made a good choice and that mechatronics will be there for a while in shoe manufacturing

Very interesting! Would be incredible to somehow be able to scan my own foot and create a last from that, then use this spray on tech to create a 1 of 1 fit!
Look into zellerfeld shoes! they're doing exactly what you described using the lidar sensors on recent iPhones.
Shouldn’t be too difficult with a 3d scanner and 3d printer ! 🙂
We can technically do that now, the problem is making it comfortable. Not always are 1:1 lasts comfortable (shockingly enough)
@@jsteuwe That is actually very surprising. I would've thought that a unique last would accommodate any individual nuances a foot may have, to allow for a perfect fit.
@@benoosthuizen4961 I think the difficulty there would be finding whatever material they're using as the spray. I'm assuming it's proprietary.

I am intrigued by the concept, but a big question I have is about the durability of the upper, and how that compares to more conventional mesh or stretch fabric upper materials. I would assume the developers have looked very carefully at this, but they don't address it in the video. They also didn't say how the shoe performed in that race in April, just shared some social media posts that alluded to it doing well. I don't expect to hear that an athlete won the race in the shoe, but I would like to know how the shoe held up and performed in terms of durability, comfort, breathability, etc. I would also like to know a bit more about the midsole that this revolutionary upper has been build on, because in an ideal world, the revolutionary upper has been given a fighting chance of making a real difference by being moulded onto an equally cutting edge midsole. (On that, in one scene in the video, they appeared to be spraying the bottom of a shoe. Would love to know what that was about.)

I am dreaming of having an ON shoes regardless of what model but it's so expensive and very limited availability anywhere. It's like I don't have a choice but buy the big brands which is readily available and got no choice. 😢

All major brands make "athletic" shoes from foam and mesh, In some factory in China. Basically overpriced Sketchers. Now you have a robot spraying a shoe out of a spray can? Now its even less material going into a shoe and at a higher price.😂
