Thank You for making this video! I just finished restoring my 959 (original owner). I have the original body, painted back in the day and you are so correct, it is paper thin! I recently purchased a new body from the UK and wondered how to paint it. My appreciation for all the detail, much appreciated!🙂

Was there stressing with you Glenn. It turned out absolutely smashing!! Thank God for line tape.. a great shortcut.
If only the decals were in better condition but vintage is vintage.
Listening to the body creaking as you were moving it was puckering...

Would love one of these - eventually. When the little bits were painted on this body the owner probably used the old Tamiya Poly paint in the small jars , that you can't get anymore. It was applied with a brush , so that's maybe why the edging is a bit bodgey.

You are a good man Glenn. ;) I would not have undertaken that task, but you did a fantastic job. My only suggestion would be to use the line tape to ring the front lights. And I do agree that you should use a thinner line tape for the bonnet and light rings. By no means was this a bodge. You should be proud and all the little "errors" here and there tie in to the shape of the original decals. It's authentic is what I mean. Someone that built this when it came out (like myself lol) did not do a perfect job on the body as we didn't revere these then as the "Holy Grail" they are seen as now, despite it being one of the worst cars as far as actual performance goes when you are running it lol. This car is more true to the nostalgia hit we want when it comes to the 959 versus a perfectly painted unmarred never run shelf queen.

Automotive pinstripe tape will solve most of the going round curve issues, you get a nice curve instead of the edge of a 50p that you get with a paper based tape that's too wide and doesn't stretch, a set of fine artists brushes will work wonders! Handles on the thin brushes can be wrapped, less shaky if thicker to hold onto:)

    • @TAMIYALegends

You’ve done a great job, however, if you’d read the manual (top left) at 14:09 in the video, you’ll notice that Tamiya tells you which parts of the body are to be painted on the outside (denoted by a “filled” symbol) and which are to be painted on the inside (empty symbol). In the end, you got there but knowing that might have reduced the stress levels somewhat!

The polycarbonate is really stretched beyond the vacform limit and the forming plug probably difficult to separate, that section might have been stronger in a separate piece?:)

I like the 959 chasis because it is unique, otherwise it looks like a Tyco toy chassis imo. If Tamiya re-re's this 959 they should do it in a limited run as an anniversary edition, like the 30th anniversary 934. Full carbon and aluminum rally chassis!

Great work mate, it’s more than alright, if you’re happy that’s all that counts, plus it looks amazing next to the other Rothmans ....
Question could you send me a link for the Polycarbonate cleaner and line tape you mention please? I’ve tried eBay and it’s a bit of a minefield.
    Cheers
    Keep up the good work!

I do not remember if this 959 is your first unit.. but if it is.. and you decide to give it a run.. go easy, especially, on pavement, these units are exceptionally tippy... FUN.. but they tip easily in heavy hard fast turns, as if the attempt to try and fishtail the rear a bit.. NOPE.. it'll flip... LOL... way back in the day, I tried several different setups on several of these. Not for racing or anything, just to bash them around for fun, as they are fun.. Lower the unit to have 1/4 inch (6mm) off the ground, while limiting the downstroke of the dampers and the slick tires help greatly, but then you can only run them on very clean newly paved parking lots, or bring a leaf blower to blow the rocks out to one side... and then, not run the bodies... Seeing one of these chugging along is neat to see, what is better then that, is 6 of these each racing around cones in a parking lot.. These are fun, and for as dinky as they are, they handle well, in perfect track or surface condition. The off road desire, well, as neat as it is, kinda pointless, when every inch of forward motion feels like you are wrecking something..lol...

I was obsessed with this car in the late '80's as a 12-16 year old,it was £200 just for the kit!,and by the time I'd got a job at 16 I'd lost interest and moved onto motorcycles etc,I never actually saw one assembled and I still haven't to this day apart from on videos such as yours but in my youthful naivety I'd never realised it was such a pig to paint the body shell.Rumours abounded then about how fragile the body was so 30+ years won't have helped!,good job mate anyway, the perseverance paid off, those 'bonnet shut' lines are too thick though bud,I would see if you can make them thinner.😊👍✌

The interesting thing about the 959 shell, I've painted a few now..Look at the instructions carefully, you are meant to paint some of the grills and the window surrounds in satin on the outside, which you have done..

One more interesting thing about painting this body. If you look at the instructions for painting this body, Tamiya does want you to paint some of the details on the outside of the Lexan body.

Just use a brush and Tamiya PC paint . Decals on first, no masking needed, zero stress and the exterior will look just as look as spray.

Do you know the Wheelbase of the Body?? I might try making a "PoorManRC" version of the Iconic 959 - but with a Repro Body sitting on a MF-01X Chassa! But I know that the MF-01X only stretches to 335mm.
Hope you and your Family had a wonderful Christmas 🎄 my Friend! 😊

Tamiya really needs to rerelease a modern version of this car either on the 4wd M chassis so it’s similarly sized to the original or just go 1/10 scale and put it on a TT02 rally chassis

This might be the most difficult body to paint. This body might also be the hardest to get in good condition. If you do find a good body, it will be very expensive. However, TBG in Canada makes a nice reproduction body for this car. This might be a good cheaper option, if they still make it.

They need to rere this kit in 12th scale and then make a 10th scale version of it that looks like the 12th scale with the same looking parts but for a 10th scale car they would make a double killing in money if they did that.
