  • Here's a simple way to start working on classical guitar improvisation. Techniques in this lesson are taken from Mauro Giuliani's Etude No. 1 in E minor and then used for improvisation.

It's a shame that improvisation techniques are not addressed in typical classical guitar lessons. The benefits of of learning to improvise are too great to ignore. This is an excellent first step if you're interested in giving it a try.

This is exactly why I was searching for videos on voicing and inversions, to understand and improvise on the classical pieces I'm studying. Please take it further!

Great lesson. I'm a classical guitarist and I've recently started incorporating the sort of stuff you talked about here, and I love it. A bit of improvisation practise goes a long way in understanding the instrument better.

Thanks!! This kind of improv is some of my favorite. Hoping to do more classical improv and theory lessons in the future like this one. Cheers! -Jared

hello after years of improvisation on the guitard i understood today that i had the right path for the classical melody the order of the notes and also the path i found it by myself without knowing that it was an already existing base and you have right on the fact that we grew up improvising we understand how to let go in a melody while keeping the beauty and I would add that the bases of the music are created by the compositions of great artists the passion and the heart that we transmit by our instrument won on the technical aspect without emotion thank you for this video :)

This is a very interesting lesson and I'm looking forward to checking out more of your content. I would like to further connect improvisation in a classical context. As a suggestion, your videos would be 100x more clear if you just added text and graphics (text) like Justinguitar does. I know it's a bit of work but it would really help the content sink in, especially you go rather fast sometimes without dropping hints

I notice youre wearing a elbow support strap on your picking hand, im suffering from elbow discomfort whilst olaying, i fear its early stage tendonitis, have you noticed any positives from playing with the elbow support, would you recommend i invest in one?

is there a specific left hand finger that play every note of the scale or we can use which we want?

Great question! For this exercise go ahead and use any left hand fingers you want. If in doubt get used to it with the first finger only. -Jared

Haha, guess what happens to me all the time: I totally loose myself in that “wiggle-room” as you call it and I never get back to the actual piece. Having tons of fun, that way, but never building any repertoire.

Ooh, good observation! That's hard to recognize, It was for me anyway because I struggled with the same thing. I think just knowing that will start to help with it already. Thanks for the comment! -Jared

This piece sounds a little like the Romance by Johann Kasper Mertz.

Sorry, this is not improvisation: in classical repertoire they say "variarions". Start with a classical theme anda start to improvising. Why classical guitarists can't do that I don't understand. There a big gap here...
