Kudos for the Video! Excuse me for the intrusion, I would appreciate your opinion. Have you researched - Riddleagan Blossoming Solo Remedy (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now)? It is a great one off product for mastering guitar scales minus the normal expense. Ive heard some unbelievable things about it and my old buddy Taylor after many years got astronomical success with it.
💡I've been playing for just over a year now and my guitar journey seems like a video game where the objective is to collect keys in order to move forward... this was definitely one of those key collecting moments. Thanks, Michael. 🗝
Love the way you explain this. I've had teachers try and show me improv since I was 14 learning piano blues but no ones made it sound this approachable. So often teachers get lost in the theory to the point where you can't even see the music and you've done completely the opposite
I so enjoy watching his lessons and when he his given his opinion about a musicians. He is hilarious and his facial expressions are priceless. You got to love him.
I couldn't understand improvising and then I watched this video. Started seeing the music as a conversation, telling a story through phrases, and now I can improvise something that sounds good! Thank you so much
This video was uploaded 6 years ago and I found it now and it’s very helpful in 2020. I’m sure that even after decades and decades this will video lesson will be very helpful as it is today for guitar learners and players. Music never dies, good lessons like this can never be ignored.
for me, it is just playing inside certain frets that combine with the background guitar playing the chords, for example if the background guitar is playing a A and C chords you'll want to play a solo in A or C
Lks2211, Lmao im so stupid... how can you even tell what chord they’re playing in the backtrack?! I’m a beginner on guitar but I’ve been playing on violin for a while so I don’t have that perfect ear for chords. Heck I can’t even tell you what single notes are without looking at the keys someone’s playing on piano.
Thanks for the lesson, you made some key points here about those root notes. Improvising is what aspiring players want to learn as it is rewarding as well as impressive to others. One thing I figured out is to learn a few mini licks then tie them together. And a lot of these can be made from simple walk ups/downs, with some small 2-3 note fillers in between. Otherwise listen to players you like and learn a few of their riffs and apply them to your playing. Play/learn them and build your lick library in your head. After a while new ones will come naturally when you are playing!
I have been playing about 1 and a half years now and Just watching 2 videos of this channel has really helped me a lot regarding music theory , Thank you !
You've explained it so well and clear by using human language, lot of teachers attempt to explain it using scale language, fretboard language and so, which make it so hard to understand. Thank you for making this easy!
Ive been learning how to play guitar and watching him explain this was honestly beautiful to me. He explained it the best possible way. Thank you so much this is just what I needed
This is the best online guitar lesson I have ever come across - I've watched hundreds from just about everyone doing it and I've learnt heaps from them, technically. But this is the first lesson that takes those technical points and really turns them into music. Thank You
Thank you! I’ve spent so much time memorizing and practicing sequences for all of the pentatonic scales, and then later I did the same for the seven 3 note per string shapes - and still can’t improv! I was so hung up on technique and pattern memorization that I never really played much music. It’s only this year that I realized I was missing out on such a vital element in learning the songs of bands I admire and then associating it with the same patterns I had memorized. I’ve wasted some years, but it’s finally coming together with that last step.
Ive seen so many videos, tutorials, and even taken a few real life classes, yet no one managed to explain this simple context to me. Begin and end on the roots. Thank god for the random guitar tutorials man, thanks for explaining.
good lesson... i can really appreciate a guitar teacher that explains something clearly, step by step, relating basic information to more complex technique.... this is how something is taught... not going on and on about how to be enthusiastic about playing with nothing explained
Lightbulb 💡 moment for me. I’ve struggled with this forever! Starting and ending on the root note, like starting a story and ending a story, just made perfect sense to me. So whatever chord is being played you start a lick ( or story) on its root note and end the lick on the root note. So the notes in between the roots will sound good. It finally clicked. Thank you !!!! This is the BEST explanation of how to improvise on TH-cam!
Great lesson! It's refreshing to hear somebody tell you to open your mind and ears to what you like, not just what licks to play. You are teaching us to find our way, thanks for taking the time.
man. thank you soooo much. i play around with the a minor since about 5-6 years and somehow i get some nice things out now and then. but THIS tutorial really helped me. i feel kinda stupid not knowing how to use it. like the part when you said something like "work arount the root notes". i paused and just played along some backing track ONLY using this one tip without watching this video any further and it pushed my skills like 200% upwards. it totally makes sense, but when no one tells you, ypu may never will know how easy it is to get some nice tones out of the a-minor pentatonic. thanks you, mr.guitargate, you're a really useful teacher on youtube. nothing like those guys who promise shit like "learn to shred like hell in 5 minutes"-bulls**t. thanks man. keep it simple like that please. you REALLY help me out. I'm playing like 12 years now but i'm not good because of ppl showing nonsense stuff which does not bring you further. you really stepped my game up by just telling this one easy trick and i really thank you. keep rocking, sir! THANKS
You're the first one to explain improvising to me in this way. Everyone else always says just play the A minor pentatonic over an A minor backing track, I would do this and I would always just end up with phrases or sentences as you call them sound like trash EVEN THOUGH i'm in the A minor pentatonic scale. I would just end up getting frustrated and would put my guitar down stopping my progression. This is a game changer, ill focus on those root notes!!. Awesome tutorial man
Thank you for explaining it that way. So many videos on this topic, and I never heard anyone basically elaborate on the idea that you have to develop a relationship with the root & chord notes within the scales. It's not just about learning the scales themselves.
Hands down the best improv lesson I have found. To the haters, this is targeted at more intermediate players ready to advance. Not some who doesn't know their scales yet.
Just seen this video. Good job, this is what its all about. Most teachers pump the theory of learning scales. Scales are NOT music, unless you can use the basis of a scale, it is a useless tool. You hit it right on the nail, learn the root notes and dance around them. Exactly right
As an advanced player this is ridiculously simple but I love your teaching style. Extremely helpful for aspiring novices. Everyone should know that advice is only as good as what it enables you to do. You're not too precious about these rules; these exercises are serving players, making players at this specific level better. You give them room to outgrow this. Very wholesome.
Very interesting. I have spent so much time studying theory, I forgot how to think and feel about the musical context. I started to see just a bunch of random notes. This has helped me change my perspective. Thank you so much!
Excellent video - very well done. This is one of the most important lessons I've watched so far in my guitar journey. There's so many lessons out there there teaching scales, chord progressions, licks etc, but not many teaching WHY these things sound good, and how to give life to the notes we play. It's given me a huge boost in motivation to keep learning. Thanks again!
This is a considerably old video, but I had been taught on an acoustic as a child and remember a few chords. Only at first to understand were you should start the improvisation. I had to teach myself at a young age so I never learned the names of all the scales or how to read music. This is a good explanation - sharing the tab or having that on the screen would help. Not to be critical because I'm not but improvising over a song that uses that chord progression would be very helpful. It provides a starting point for players like myself. Thanks for sharing!
This is a very nice tip coming up to me at a very nice time. I have been practising pentatonic scales with backing tracks but I was never completely happy. Let me try doing this. Thanks.

Say brah, I really dig the way you explain that stuff man! Telling the story about the root. I like that. This is great for rock, pop, blues, funk, classic acid house, etc. However in certain styles, especially jazz, players generally don't like to start and end on the root because it's too predictable sounding.

Say brah, I really dig the way you explain that stuff man! Telling the story about the root. I like that. This is great for rock, pop, blues, funk, classic acid house, etc. However in certain styles, especially jazz, players generally don't like to start and end on the root because it's too predictable sounding.
Da Guvna 100% This is an introduction to improv, and playing "about the root" is the best place to start. Thanks!
