Thanks for the lesson, you made some key points here about those root notes. Improvising is what aspiring players want to learn as it is rewarding as well as impressive to others. One thing I figured out is to learn a few mini licks then tie them together. And a lot of these can be made from simple walk ups/downs, with some small 2-3 note fillers in between. Otherwise listen to players you like and learn a few of their riffs and apply them to your playing. Play/learn them and build your lick library in your head. After a while new ones will come naturally when you are playing!

Lightbulb 💡 moment for me. I’ve struggled with this forever! Starting and ending on the root note, like starting a story and ending a story, just made perfect sense to me. So whatever chord is being played you start a lick ( or story) on its root note and end the lick on the root note. So the notes in between the roots will sound good. It finally clicked. Thank you !!!! This is the BEST explanation of how to improvise on TH-cam!

Thank you! I’ve spent so much time memorizing and practicing sequences for all of the pentatonic scales, and then later I did the same for the seven 3 note per string shapes - and still can’t improv! I was so hung up on technique and pattern memorization that I never really played much music. It’s only this year that I realized I was missing out on such a vital element in learning the songs of bands I admire and then associating it with the same patterns I had memorized. I’ve wasted some years, but it’s finally coming together with that last step.

man. thank you soooo much. i play around with the a minor since about 5-6 years and somehow i get some nice things out now and then. but THIS tutorial really helped me. i feel kinda stupid not knowing how to use it. like the part when you said something like "work arount the root notes". i paused and just played along some backing track ONLY using this one tip without watching this video any further and it pushed my skills like 200% upwards. it totally makes sense, but when no one tells you, ypu may never will know how easy it is to get some nice tones out of the a-minor pentatonic.
    thanks

Everyone else always says just play the A minor pentatonic over an A minor backing track, I would do this and I would always just end up with phrases or sentences as you call them sound like trash EVEN THOUGH i'm in the A minor pentatonic scale. I would just end up getting frustrated and would put my guitar down stopping my progression. This is a game changer, ill focus on those root notes!!. Awesome tutorial man

As an advanced player this is ridiculously simple but I love your teaching style. Extremely helpful for aspiring novices. Everyone should know that advice is only as good as what it enables you to do. You're not too precious about these rules; these exercises are serving players, making players at this specific level better. You give them room to outgrow this. Very wholesome.

This is a considerably old video, but I had been taught on an acoustic as a child and remember a few chords. I remember taking up classes later on after dropping it.. then I picked it up again and learned the 5 pentatonic shapes. Since then I’ve learned a few sections on Europa by Santana, Sweet Child O Mine, Babe Im Gonna Leave You, and so on. I have a pretty good ear for picking out where things are on the fretboard and I’ve mostly hopped back and forth between Pentatonic Scales and adjusting to with key by just listening and I alternate between the shapes. I’ve been frustrated with the mechanical scale-like improvisation and I’ve been dying to play like you do or many others. This video just reminds me of how complex and intricate guitar is with scales, licks, chords and so on. But you really helped to clear up on the whole scale playing habits some get into. Thanks so much! I guess your suggestion would be tinker with songs I like and just pick at it and implement those and blend some to make up my own style? How does one determine the tuning a song is in?

Da Guvna 100% This is an introduction to improv, and playing "about the root" is the best place to start. Thanks!

This is really helpful! I usually play a lick I know then stay in that one box on the fret board the whole track!

This is a good explanation - sharing the tab or having that on the screen would help. Not to be critical because I'm not but improvising over a song that uses that chord progression would be very helpful. It provides a starting point for players like myself. Thanks for sharing!

Wish we had access to info like this years ago ..It's like we get to pick a guitar teacher that teaches us what we need . !! I started off on a Mel Bay chord book and had no explanation why chords existed . I couldn't afford lessons . nor would a buddy a few steps ahead explain anything to me ..So I wandered .. I had to have epiphanies and they didn't come every week .. Sometimes years !! and begin to riddle .. So I struggled with what I saw as the most difficult . For that day when the riddle is solved . I'd already had every note and every scale shape laid out in my brain . I found the most difficult was harmonic minors and for some reason the seemingly useless diminished .. I mastered all shapes and eventually figured out how solo with ease .. But damn.. It was definitely the hard way . .. I still am always looking for new ideas and I laud these teachers that make it easier and more interesting for beginners .. If you lose interest .. The guitar ends up collecting dust .. For whatever it's worth .. I'd like to help as well .. There is a site called fachord.com .. and TH-cam has backing tracks from every style of music .... Pick a Backing Track and turn on a song in whatever key . find the mode then refer to fachord and from the drop down list for say " G Mixolydian " and it will display the entire fret board visually .. Every note is displayed and it's root .. and begin to feel it .. Man I wish I had access to what is available today .

A decade on....and this is still one of the clearest explanation of making music for players who know their pentatonic shapes but don't know how to converse on the guitar

Learn the CAGED system and the notes on the neck and this makes perfect sense. Great place to start with improvisation.

Haha, i love how you talk with the rhythm of your backing track. I'm the only person i know, doing this. Chewing, thinking, walking even winking. Ride the rhythm, everything else just feels wrong. ^^
Great video btw, the thing with the root notes was my missing piece in the puzzle of music improvisation. :)
