The STM technology is really amazing and useful for "run and gun" videographers. I just wish they would make an L-series lens with the STM motor so I can have better or constant aperture and some weatherproofing.
I have this lens and it takes awesome pictures. It's sharp and good contrast. The focus is pretty fast and silent and build quality is good. I got it for about 300 US dollars so at least I didn't pay 500.
Thanks for your prompt reply i have just been watching your upload on the 24-105 f4 lens and should have mentioned i am looking at the more 'budget' end! Just seen that the 24-105 is available as stm though it is a variable f stop range, d'oh. I really like your videos, lots of interesting and useful content keep up the good work.
Hi ! Your video is really interesting because it illustrates the problems I noticed with his kit, mainly the zoom. I have the EOS 700D Canon camera with this zoom EFS 18-135 mm. I never managed to record a great video because it indeed gives an awful barrel effect. Lens correction is not available on EOS utility for this zoom. What do you suggest as lens for this camera ? I need something to record my face and more often my full body with a guitar in a studio. Available distance from the camera to the body is about 7 ft. Many thanks if you can help me !
Hi i am a hobbyist photographer with a recent keen interest in video and am looking to buy a 70d. Your comment re the image getting darker when zooming during videoing is surely true for all dslr zoom lenses not just the 18-135mm one?
The phenomenon is called a variable aperture zoom. When you see a zoom lens with a range of numbers for the maximum aperture values, it means it's a variable zoom. (eg EF-S 18-135mm "F3.5-5.6") A zoom lens with a constant aperture across the zoom range will have only one value, the maximum aperture value in the lens name. (eg EF 24-105mm "F4"L)
Hi, good review! I have a question.. Im going to follow photography lessons at the end of this year and i am going to buy the Canon 70D aswell, but im not sure which lens i should buy with it.. which lens do you recommend for all-round photography?
Hey, Good Review. I am a film student and I own a 70D camera but I need a decent Lens. I've already used the 18-135mm lens (from the college I'm studying at) should I buy my own 18-135mm lens or something else?
Daniel Wheatley This is a fairly versatile lens for video, but it is certainly not the best. The variable max aperture + focus by wire can be drawbacks for video shooting. Look into lenses like the 24-105 F4L or the Sigma 18-35 Art.
I just bought a 70D, can you plis recommend a prime lens for portraits. I'm also planning to do lots of landscape photos, what lens should I look into?
I'd recommend a Sigma 17-70 F2.8-F4 instead, or a Sigma 17-50 F2.8. Those lenses can give you far better value for the price :) For canon, unless you're looking at primes, the good zooms always cost a crazy bunch of money...

Yes I have one too, its a good lens & only paid around $350 for it
The guy doing the review is a bit of a drip if you ask me
For a $350 lens its a fantastic all around lens but for $500 its pretty average.

Isn't it easier to say "milimeters"?

Sean Patrick Kwik The Sigma 17-50 F2.8 is a great lens to start on.

ZY Productions Thank you, I'll look into them. :)
Daniel Wheatley the STM IS is great for video and that is kind of neglected in this review.

For portraits, I recommend the Canon 85mm F1.8 USM. The Sigma 50mm F1.4 Art is worth taking a look at too.
For landscapes, Tokina 11-16 F2.8.
Thank you for the info... I'll check them out :)
Great advice as usual...What would be your recommendation for a comparable lens at that that price? Thanks and keep up the good work!
