  • » Are fullframe cameras worth it in 2023? Today's myths about micro four thirds vs fullframe cameras:
    1. Can you have a lower ISO with a fullframe sensor?
    2. Can fullframe handle higher ISO than micro four thirds?
    3. Is f/2 on mft basicaly f/4 on fullframe?
    4. Lumix 12-60mm f2.8-4 lens VS Canon fullframe 24-105mm f4-7.1
    5. Is the nifty fifty lens really what you think it is? Canon 50mm f1.8 VS Lumix 25mm f1.7
    6. Are fullframe cameras bigger and heavier?
    I asked dozens of photographers but noone could give me a trustworthy answer on these questions so… I had to figure it out myself. It doesn't matter if you have a micro four thirds Lumix G80, G9, G90, GH5 or GH6. Even the BMPCC 4K or 6K use an MFT sensor with 2x crop. Canon RP or R8, Lumix S5 and and all fullframe cameras my be worth consideration if you do a lot of photography.

    00:00 - Quick Backstory
    00:40 - You can have a lower ISO on fullframe, since it's a bigger sensor?
    No. And Ironically, for the same settings you would actually need a HIGHER ISO. And for a 2x crop, 4x the ISO with the same settings.
    00:59 - Fullframe can handle 2x the ISO compared to crop sensor cameras?
    This varies from camera to camera, but in general, fullframe cameras DO handle higher ISOs better. If you want to compare your camera to any other camera on different ISOs, I will link this comparison tool where you can compare the performances. I recommend looking at small text, hair and feathers for detail.
    DP REVIEW studio shot comparison tool: www.dpreview.com/reviews/imag...
    01:23 - Is f/2 on mft basicaly f/4 on fullframe?
    And this killed all my micro43 f1.8 lenses. To achieve and F4 look on APSC you would need F2.5 and on M43 F2. So does that mean this 1000$ f/2.8-4 lens is basically the kit lens from the Canon RP?
    01:48 - Lumix 12-60mm f/2.8-4 lens VS Canon FF 24-105mm f/4-7.1
    Lumix 12-60mm f 2.8-4 lens would actually produce less depth of field, and would make a 24-120mm f/5.6-8 as a fullframe equivalent.
    02:04 - Fullframe 50mm f1.8 VS Lumix m43 25mm f1.8
    Same goes for the nifty-fifty and portrait lenses. You can try to get a speedbooster for your lumix camera to achieve at least a 1.4 crop look, even though the focus is quite terrible with that. F/1.8 is not a bad bokeh for MFT, but it matches the f3.5 bokeh of fullframe.
    03:40 - Fullframe cameras are bigger and heavier than mft and apsc..
    So will my camera bag be any bigger with a fullframe camera? No. At least compared to the combo I had earlier. For an f/2.8-4 lumix lens i'll be fine with an f/4-7.1 fullframe lens.
    Do you have any more doubts? Let’s make a discussion in the comments.

    an f2 lens is an f2 lens for exposure purposes. a 25mm f2 on a m43 will have the same bokeh as a 25mm f2 on a fullframe. the difference is, when we want the same framing we use 25mm f2 on m43 and 50mm f2 on the fullframe. the bokeh difference is due to the difference in focal length.

      I think I get your point, but does it eliminate the fact that the bokeh matches? 🤔

      @@PatrikHrabovec bokeh matches? Bokeh will match on m43 and full frame if the have the same focal length and aperture. If both have a 50mm f1.8 bokeh on both will match but framing will be different. Bokeh will also match if framing is the same (25mm on m43 and 50mm on ff) but aperture should be 2x faster on m43 to compensate for the focal length change.
      EDIT: if you get a 20mm shoot on a m43 and then a ff the fov is different but the bokeh is the same. if you crop the ff picture and make it the same fov as the m43 the bokeh will be exactly the same.
      EDIT: found a video that explains what i'm talking about. th-cam.com/video/Bw5I-huSK7k/w-d-xo.html

      @@laurendelosreyes9615 this is where you are wrong. Yes the same lens will resuilt in the same bokeh, but lens made for MFT will have a phisically smaller opening and f-stop because of a phisically smaller sensor. So that will affect bokeh. f/2 made for mft is smaller than f/2 made for full frame

      @@spakecdk f2 means an f stop of f2. thats exactly what is on the lens if its f2 regardless of the sensor size. why are you saying a m43 lens has a smaller f stop? sensor size has nothing to do with the f-stop. it is the ratio of the diameter of the lens and the focal length. a 50mm f2 lens made for fullframe and a 50mm f2 lens made for m43 will have the same diameter lens.

      @@spakecdk Actually not true back in the film days we used to have the same lenses behind different film sizes (4x5, 5x7 or medium format back) provided the image circle was large enough it worked quite well and we got the exact same exposure. In fact we were in the same situation then since the same focal length produced different framing and yes if we wanted to frame the same scene with say a 6x7 cm and get the framing of a 4x5 inches film we would have to move back and it would result is more DOF since DOF is very much influenced by the focusing distance

    00:47 - I got it! The difference between F2 and F4 is 2 full stops (1.4 > 2 > 2.8 > 4 > 5.6 > ...), That's why there's a 2 stop difference between the ISOs. (ISO 100 > ISO 200 > ISO 400)

    Thanks for video. Your observation that quality of "equivalent" lenses is difficult to achieve is spot on. FF manufacturers make money on f2.8 zooms and f1.2-1.8 primes. They don't make a weatherproof equivalent of Panasonic 35-100mm f2.8, for example (which would be 70-200mm f5.6)

    • @PatrikHrabovec
      @PatrikHrabovec  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you, your comment just made my day better :) I mean their equivalent would be the 70-200 f/4 L, or f/2.8 L, which are weatherproof, but also they cost 3x as much too :D

    • @video-carl
      @video-carl 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@PatrikHrabovec thanks :) they cost 3x but a f2.8 collects 4x as much light as a MFT 2.8. so, that's feels fair. But a FF f5.6 would collect about the same amount of light as a MFT f2.8 and probably at a similar cost... if they were made :)

      If you want a similar option, I gota Tamron 70-300mm f/4-5.6, which cost me around 170$. For how much did you get your mft 35-100mm? @@video-carl

    No, an f/2 lens is always an f/2 lens, but ... in several respects it behaves as an f/4 lens. Diffraction, light gathering, DOF, diameter of aperture, ...
    That is why it sometimes is called f/4 equivalent. With good reasons.

    • @PatrikHrabovec
      @PatrikHrabovec  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's a pretty good explanation Roland 👌 I guess photographers should also start differentiating F-stops and T-stops. (Lumix F/4 T/2 lens? ) 🤔

    • @pawel_stocki
      @pawel_stocki 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@PatrikHrabovec f-stop and t-stop is totally different thing than you say. T stop measures amount of light that pass trough the lens, f stop measures how many light can theoretically go through the lens. So yeah, MFT f2 lens is always f2, but it has depth of field LIKE ff f4 lens. And it probably has T2.2, because of inefficiency in light transmission.
