Thanks for the brutally honest review. I am so glad I waited on the pre order and even after the official release. I’m still going to hold off, not sold yet. My Shure’s still keep on rockin’ the dancefloors!
Great review Mojaxx! Ours still haven’t made it out of the studio as I don’t trust the pair we have still. It’s unfortunate but fingers crossed MWM continues to try and improve it.
Played every gig with phase since April since end of may without needle backup. Got 4 remotes, always playing 6-8 hours. Never had a pair run out of battery ONCE! Had a pair of bloated remotes, got em exchanged within 5 business days. Game changer for me!
They use WiFi in the 2.4Ghz band, but using the Zigby protocol which operates in channels just outside of what you would use for home routers etc. I think its Channels 14 to 18. But yes if you are in an area with lots of 2.4Ghz use, you could get contention issues. Best to keep the box as close to the decks as possible. And dont put your phone next to them with Bluetooth and wifi turned on.

It gets on my nerves how Serato who are based in my home country are not trying to support Phase. Mojax - you're a legend with your reviews and one of the few DJ channels I truly trust on TH-cam.
The serato « noisemap » control signal allows to the software to know the absolute position of the needle on the disk and allows to compensate the drift caused by the small errors from the turntable speed detection. The phase device don’t generate that signal so you will always have a small drift overtime. Depending of the accuracy of the accelerometer, the drift can be reasonable but not removed. Ps : I worked for a couple years on a popular DVS system ;)
Thanks for the review, Mojaxx! It is great! As always! My opinion on the phase: beta but already released. There are too many issues with it! Not only that but in addition there are things which will never change. For example: You have to rely on the batteries. If they are drained or aged or just break, you are screwed. Furthermore, you have to bring an additional device, get it paired, hope that everything works and so on. Its a too big source of trouble for my taste. If you want to replace DVS and still have a turntable feeling, the Rane 12 is the way to go. No battery, no track end, no missing noise map, no additional device, no headache! Just rock solid.
I've said that the Rane Twelves are the future. just like I thought that controllers are the future. Phase is a lot like the Serato interface before they were put into mixers. It's here to satisfy/pacify the DJs who performed with turntables their whole careers. And for them to be able to have the same luxury as "newer" Djs who have controllers. I personally don't care for DVS (though I still use it). I'm at a point where I just wanna use my turntables with "REAL" vinyl records. And just buy a solid controller. The world is moving way too fast for Lags and Drifts... The ONLY problem have with the Rane Twelves are the fact it only works with Serato. It's need to be able to work with multiple platforms, with a high price like that...
Phase uses inertial measurement units (IMU) over either wifi or bluetooth to connect to the hub. It's very difficult to eliminate drift with IMUs, unless multiple IMUs are inserted in each device and referencing each other (they do this for military applications however and is possible). The minimal drift Phase has achieved is very good in terms of what is achievable with IMUs - but any drift is an issue for scratching and juggling etc. Just pointing this out, the drift issue isn't related to the noise map tone that Serato uses. Thanks for the great review!
Mojax your reviews are always totally on point and this one is so relevant to my current situation and the concerns I’ve had with buying phase and in particular with a hardware update making the original version obsolete.
Regarding cue drift and their "proprietary" technology: I am 99% sure these transmitters have accelerometer and gyroscope inside (just like your smartphone). Accelerometer determines direction and speed of movement and gyro probably adds angle correction. And the problem with these accelerometers that they have sensitivity limit, so if you will move it slower than it can detect your move, then your move will not be detected. And that's why cue is drifting slowly - when movement speed becomes less than detection limit it goes "out of sight". Try to spin it very slowly and probably you will be able to turn your marker at 180 degrees without any "movement" of the track. And as it is hardware, I think it will never be fixed.
Thing with Phase is that now you can hunt for some cheap but good dj turntables with broken tonearms and just cannibalize the tonearm parts out. I have done this with three turntables already.
MO has any company out there created a similar system to make some competition against phase I'm hoping pioneer would get the same system they put on their plx cross 12s turn tables and make a hardware that would work on different turntables an offer it to the DJ community cuz so far it seems like phase has a monopoly going
I already own it , haven’t had many problems and I’ve used it over 100 hours already ... just the internal jump and one or 2 disconnects but considering over done gigs ... not bad Thanks @Mojaxx for the great review as always
Great Review! I’m new to this technology, and have been researching Phase for a while now and contemplating getting this Phase…🤔 By the way, what do you mean by “que point drift?” 10:34 I come from the era of vinyl and have been upgrading my studio for the past 6 months. It’s amazing how technology has changed the face of DJing over the past 30 to 40 years.

Big review, and as always honest to the bone. As a Traktor user I would have liked to have seen a bit with that software (and the other compatible software too) to see if the issues with Serato were also prevalent when using Traktor. I love the idea of the Rane 12's but they don't work with Traktor so I'm rather intrigued with Phase. Maybe you can make a followup video of it working with the other supported software available.
Phase has huge potential but so far i have seen many posts on youtube from djs with issues with this system.I like the concept but it needs to be reliable and the control needs to be tight if its target market ,turntablist are going to take it up.Djs do not like wireless systems as some places have all kinds of signals bouncing about and i wouldnt trust using phase in a festival setting.I think it has a future if they can lock the performance issues down but right now the rane 12 appeals to me more as it has turntable control with no tone arm and no time codes.I will keeop my decks as i have a lot of vinyl and maybe one day phase will fulfill its promise then i will have decks with phase and i can switch to vinyl too
I bought a pair a few weeks ago, and so far I’m really enjoying them. The only problem I really had was waking them up after they went to sleep (I had to let the batteries run out before they would connect again), but that was resolved by turning off the sleep option in the app. As always, love your reviews!!!
I really like Phase and what it’s capable of. But I refuse to take it out to a wedding or other event while it’s still jumping into absolute mode or having random connectivity issues.
Is it me or does serato time code incur much more WOW & flutter than traktor? When ever i see a screen grab of serato it is waverying +- 0.1 bpm. Traktor with the timecode or now with phase since the firmware update wavers +- 0.01bpm. That is without the stable bpm option on too....
Legit review. I have the twelves and phase. I like phase better. Luckily I haven't had too many issues and stayed lucky even through the firmware update. Feels way more analog to me then the twelves. Im staying positive that most issues will be resolved in the future, they need to get on the same page as serato ASAP TOO. Just bad they can't handle the volume for proper customer service at the moment.
@@FaderFlosser not "substantially" I don't know how to describe accurately in words, I mean they get the job done but it's a little "digital" and choppy with certain movements. I don't love them anymore. Phase to me feels the closest to real vinyl.
... But what is the point? It only replaces your control vinyl but still needs to be attached to your vinyl. So now you're taking control vinyl and phase to a gig instead of just control vinyl. It's more expensive than control vinyl. If it also replaced your audio interface it would make sense but it doesn't. So it's an additional thing to plug in and go wrong. Only benefit I can see is it reduces wear on needles. If turntables are set up they should be properly isolated by the sound tech.
Mojaxx , thx for that fair minded review. I just got me a good deal thru Gtar center and am confident to use them with my pioneer plx 100. Hope I can get back with my experiences. Wish me luck @Dj commander B Seattle.
i got to try it briefly at sample music festival in Berlin last month. i was very impressed with the super low latency when cutting. i was full on for buying it at that point. until i watched this review.. just don't know now...Cue drift would be a deal breaker for me. i have had those issues with serato from time to time. dodgy needles or less than perfect control vinyls etc etc. i don't want to have that issue in phase at all if i'm going to buy it. I'm pretty sure i'm not alone on that one.
It's like Denons...first, you have to be lucky enough to get proper unit. As I see in the comments or/and reviews, people are either having great experience or many problems. And then, there is that "It will be better, updates are coming" promise...
I have a DDJ SX2 with DVS capability, I also have 1200’s so I was considering getting some Phase’s controls. But then the RANE ONE got announced & now Is not sure if I should get the Rane One for $1500 or invest in some Phase. What do you think?

Sorry if this has already been asked, but what are those turntables? 1200s with a straight tone arm and those gel buttons where the 45 adapter normally would fit. Interesting! My Vestax PDX 2000 MKI should be arriving tomorrow!

He did a video of them. I can't remember exactly where he had them done (I think it was somewhere in Holland) but they were VERY expensive and, now, you'll struggle to find many places that will even got the dicers in the decks. But if you've got a couple of thousand dollars to spare, then go for it.
Hi, looking for the best way for my brother to be able to mix with Serato. Any help would be greatly appreciated. He has 1210s and an analogue mixer, if I purchased Phase and Serato, is that all he needs? I've read conflicting information, not sure if also need a DVS hardware mixer? All the best.
I've been watching Jazzy Jeff touring and gigging with them for months. Seems like there's a certain kind of environment where their utility outweighs their foibles. I think i'm going to stick with a controller or cdjs or sl for now, even tho this is really tempting. I'm a mixed media dj... I have some stuff i play on vinyl as well as digital... So this would be the ideal solution once it's more reliable
i am having problem with brand new nov 2020 phase, suddenly one of the remote led dead, it already use v5 firmware and it battery already detect full. Any idea?
Not a DJ but I actually thought these control tones would go from low to high pitch so one could also jump in time by positioning the pickup somewhere else on the vinyl.
Great review ! Before i say something about Phase. Your set up looks amazing. Now to Phase. I love the system and how it performs at gigs. I always had issues with control vinyl with wind and bass rumble. the new firmware has been great. With Rekordbox it is better with the cue drift than serato . over all. this is a game charger. and if they get better, wow. game over.
hey Mojaxx: my serato sl3 is no longer compatible, as had to buy a new laptop with Windows 11, it's the 3rd serato hardware item now, and a bit fed up with them tbh. what would you recommend for dvs now, bearing in mind I use an ecler nuo 4.0: buy a new mixer that is compatible, buy traktor a6, buy recordbox etc...not sure where to go from here or just scrap it send stick to vinyl 😉
thanks Mojaxx. Does Phase work in (or like) Sticker Lock Mode? In that, if you have your cues set to 12 o'clock, then load a new song, will Phase wait to come around to the 12 o'clock position to line up your first cue point? Basically, the same way Sticker Lock Mode works?
First off Mojaxx, great review.. i received my phase about a wk ago and i'm also having some issues.. Im not sure if its a setting issue with my serato or if its the phase, but 1 of my issues is when im trying to set up a cue point, it drifts, or it jumps foward or back. depending how im moving the vinyl. so sometimes i can't get the cue point exactly where i want it.. also another issue i have which seems to be unique with mine is that after its been playing for a while, the sound cuts off, then comes back after a few secs crackly, like if it was calibrating.... ? have you heard about dat? can u help?
The first one sounds like you might need to play with the noise sensitivity slider in Serato... Second one, I don’t know. Hit up Phase support or join one of the Phase Facebook groups, somebody else might know what’s up.
@@Mojaxx i really appreciate you getting back to me.. thank you very much.. also im a fan of you guys.. a lot of great students have came out of you guys.. love is love.. any schools coming to the nyc?

Nice review, I’m still interested but probably gonna wait a while.
Excellent review.
i am having problem with brand new nov 2020 phase, suddenly one of the remote led dead, it already use v5 firmware and it battery already detect full.
With Rekordbox it is better with the cue drift than serato . over all. this is a game charger. and if they get better, wow. game over.
Thanks bro, excellent review
hey Mojaxx: my serato sl3 is no longer compatible, as had to buy a new laptop with Windows 11, it's the 3rd serato hardware item now, and a bit fed up with them tbh. what would you recommend for dvs now, bearing in mind I use an ecler nuo 4.0: buy a new mixer that is compatible, buy traktor a6, buy recordbox etc...not sure where to go from here or just scrap it send stick to vinyl 😉
the whole serato thing just seems like a waste and a bit of a cash cow
Sh!%#... Im waiting on the 2.0 or 3.0 hahahhaahahahaa I seen this coming a mile away
whats the point of using vynl when you dont use any vynl components? why dont you just use cdjs instead?
RetosBeats the rotating platter along with the size of them
RetosBeats it’s almost like why have a CDJ when you don’t play cds?
*Anybody remember the Pacemaker?*
Still have one, keep it as a reminder to not buy things when drunk.
Didn't CDJ-2000 was suppose to be integrated with the pacemaker 10 years ago.
could you do a video when one doesn't work, I just ran into this problem
I like your style.
Keep it real!
🤘
What happens if you scratch with the phase box?
thanks Mojaxx. Does Phase work in (or like) Sticker Lock Mode? In that, if you have your cues set to 12 o'clock, then load a new song, will Phase wait to come around to the 12 o'clock position to line up your first cue point? Basically, the same way Sticker Lock Mode works?
I’ve been trying to find the same answer. It’s in wireless mode and can’t find anything about that
First off Mojaxx, great review.. i received my phase about a wk ago and i'm also having some issues..
Your computer's CPU can be an issue
Ciao. si puo usare con serato scheda audio 2 con un mixer normale ? per il punto cue basta aspetatre la prima battuta?... o serve punto cue memorizzato? grazie. non so se mi sono spiegato bene...(serve una porta usb o no?)
I love those decks
